Guest guest
Hey Vickie, I've been taking Welbutrin for nearly two months now and I am 29.2 weeks along in my pregnancy. Welbutrin has an appetite suppressant in it and it's used for anxiety/depression. It works wonders for me! If I didn't take it, I think I would be in the middle of a divorce right now. Also, since I've been on it I've only gained 2 pounds unlike before I was gaining left & right. I just got back to the office after my OB visit today so I know how much I weigh as of today. I'm very impressed w/ it! The same OB put me on it right after I had my son in Dec 2000. I didn't notice it as much, but I do see the benefits now and will more than likely continue on it for quite some time. Plus when I have this little boy I get to go back on my glucophage which helps keep my weight in check and will hopefully allow me to lose a little too. Besides what falls off right after delivery....Anyway, hope this helps? Lori~ > I was just wondering what some of you are taking as an anti- depressant > while pregnant. Guest guest
I had a bad experience with Welbutrin....Not during pregnancy, but I was taking it to try and quit smoking. It's supposed to be an anti- depressant, but had the opposite effect on me. I was miserable...banging my head on the wall (literally) and crying all the time...I actually had to have my family take care of my son for a few days, that's how bad I was. Just thought I'd give you my experience with it! Tara > > I was just wondering what some of you are taking as an anti- > depressant > > while pregnant. Guest guest
I think my father took it for the same thing....to help stop smoking and it didn't work very well for him. I also had a friend who was on it and did very well, but she didn't use it to help her stop smoking. It was an anxiety thing I believe. I wonder if it works differently for different things? Guest guest
My mom tried Wellbutrin for anxiety and it didn't help, made her worse - made her freak out. My DH tried it for Smoking, he said it made him feel hyper and " funny " - whatever that means : ) Paxil works for alot of people that I know personally for anxiety, and I used it for 2 weeks before my wedding and it helped alot with anxiety/stress. Even though its supposed to take 2 weeks to kick in, I have no tolerance for medication because I rarely use anything and it helped me from day 2-3. My Best Friend was on Prozac for Anorexia/Bulimia/Depression and it seemed to help her alot unless she missed a pill that day. Just my $0.02 Shirley

Guest guest
I also was diagnosed with BED (binge eating disorder) years before my surgery. I have been on Prozac now for 6 years with a few breaks in between, my breaks are from my stubborness in " trying to see if I really need it " . I discontinued my prozac right before becoming pregnant only to have my doctor recommend that I start back on it at 6 weeks along for personal reasons. I have been on phenergan for 2 months for severe nausea and found that my soft " comfort " foods stayed down best. WRONG MOVE - the sugar cravings are awful, no dumping anymore, and the more depressed I got - the more I ate. I found my self eating to feel that feeling - that painfully full feeling you get after bingeing. And for a binge eater - soft foods WILL outeat your surgery, it is incredibly scary. I am trying now to eliminate the sugars from my mouth again and find soothing alternatives for my turning tummy. My prayers go out to any of us here that suffer with eating disorders and depression, i have found several sites that do support using prozac safely during pregnancy - my research now is finding out about safety during breastfeeding. ===== *:»§«:*Tina*:»§«:* Open RNY 3-2-2001 396 B4 surgery, 343 at surgery 215 now and PREGNANT -- due 12-5-02 have 4 girls, now praying for a boy!! iel Lorne or Reilly Kathleen ? __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Are SSRIs safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women? Misri S, Burgmann A, Kostaras D. Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the literature on use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants for pregnant and breastfeeding women. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: MEDLINE was searched over the past 9 years. An examination of the literature over the last 8 years was included in this review. Primary studies consist of prospective investigations and case studies. Evidence for the safety of SSRIs is limited, but some good studies describe the effects of untreated depression. SYNTHESIS: All studies report that infants are exposed to SSRIs; the drugs can be measured in their plasma and urine. Some evidence shows an increase in minor perinatal complications among infants exposed to SSRIs late in gestation or while nursing. No studies, however, have found an increase in major fetal malformations or pregnancy-related complications. The only investigation of long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes found no negative outcomes among infants exposed to SSRIs during pregnancy. Data are scarce, and readers are cautioned to take into consideration the limitations of the studies reviewed before making definite treatment decisions. CONCLUSIONS: Major fetal malformations and exposure to SSRIs during pregnancy and lactation do not appear to be associated. Some minor perinatal complications have been reported. Data on the long-term developmental outcomes of children exposed to SSRIs in utero and during breastfeeding are limited. PMID: 10752001 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Re: Anti-depressants while pregnant I also was diagnosed with BED (binge eating disorder) years before my surgery. Guest guest
According to my GP and OB, Zoloft is safe during pregnancy. I am 21 weeks into my second pregnancy and all is well. I am taking 50 mg of Zoloft since before my WLS in 1999, with one brief exception. I tried Celexa last summer because the Zoloft tended to depress my " desires " (if you know what I mean). When I consulted with my OB about getting pregnant, he reccommended returning to Zoloft because there was more data of it's use during pregnancy. I hope this helps.
