Guest guest
Thanks, Katcha. I'm working on it. I'm glad I discussed it with you all because now I am beginning to really think about this. :-) Tai To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Monday, June 13, 2011 3:25 PMSubject: Re: Where do I start Tai, one thing you can do - for yourself! - is to get an inexpensive blood pressure cuff and take your own readings. There really is a phenomenon called 'white coat hypertension', which is where your pressure reads higher mainly due to the tension we all feel when we are in the doctor's office. And if you keep track of your BP reading (weekly if high, monthly if not), you can print it out and give it to your doctor for him/her to keep in their files. It makes it easy for your doctor to review the readings and know s/he has done their job too. Blood pressure is 'invisible' and not something most people check for themselves which is why medical people feel its a good idea to check it when you are there. But if the readings there aren't an accurate reflection of YOUR reality, both you and the doctor need to know that.Best wishes, KatchaIEing since March 2007 >> Hi, Sandy. I know it sounds silly, but I never really knew you could refuse to be weighed at the doctor's office. Can you refuse to have your blood pressure checked? I hate it when I go to the doctor for one thing and right away they weigh me (ridiculous) and take my blood pressure. My doctor always comes down on me for my pressure, and I'm never happy when I see my weight. Tai>

Guest guest
Hi CL, I go to Stanford hospital and my transplant doctor is extremely kind. Most of the time he listens to me and wants to know what is going on with me instead of checking the kidney. We both have confidense I am doing very well and my high blood pressure is due to the office visit and seeing new transplant patient. Somehow, old fears get triggered when i go for check up. I have not gone for my check up this year, I keep postponing it. You encouraged me to go for a blood test this week. thanks again. I did not gain any weight after transplant BUT I always struggle with binging so my doctor does not know about my diet struggle. Finally I decided to join IE group to have more peace with food. I am reading slow down diet book NOW and it it very helpful. i highly recommended I have been reading some of the posts, but still confused about some things. Where do I begin to overcome my diet problem? I know that sounds a bit stupid, but I have been on a roller coaster for the past few months that I am just exhausted. I was eating healthy and lost 40 lbs from Sept of last year to Feb of this year. I suffer from panic attachs while in a car and had one and than the roller coaster of eating came and I have gain all that I lost.I weigh 335 right now and as you can see I did not need to gain that weight back when I need to lose alot more.Any advice?Betty

Guest guest
With all of the talk about bp, I wanted to share something my doc told me. I also have white coat syndrome. I take my bp at home. She told me that because they know I get stressed, they focus on the lower number at the office, and as long as that's good, they don't worry. She said if anyone ever questioned me elsewhere, I should look at that number and see. I do think it's worth paying attention to bp. You may not have a stroke but high bp affects your brain (dementia--a friend's husband has alzheimers which worsened because of undiagnosed high bp) and it affects your kidneys (they grow and eventually shut down). I'd like to give a different way of looking at it --bp is not necessarily weight-related. You could be very thin and physically fit and still have high bp. It happens. Patti Hi Sandy, Those are fabulous ideas! I love the falling asleep in the dentist chair, do you think they could take my blood pressure when I am sleeping!?!?! I want to try listening to something soothing as I'm in the waiting room. Reading your post actually reminded me of another reason I am so anxious at my appointments and that is mainly because I see a lot of patients that are really sick, just like I was and I remember my own childhood fears surfacing. This is a topic I've brought to therapy, however I hadn't related it to the waiting room and my BP. Yes, some relaxation music and advocating for myself are really important reminders for me. And, I don't want any lectures... never worked for me as a kid and certainly never worked for me as an adult! Thank you!C To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Sun, June 12, 2011 2:08:16 PMSubject: Re: Where do I start You are not alone with"white coat syndrome" Most people's BP goes up at the MD's office and they should know that. Just some ideas but choosing another doctor sounds like a good one since you have that option. When your records get transferred however, they will say non-compliant with BP medicine. So they will have already set you up to fail, maybe. I have a friend who does meditation in the waiting room and deep breathing. I was able to do self hypnosis at one time and put myself asleep in the dentist's chair! Both meditation and trance work are very much alike and not that hard to do.. There are lots of book and audio tapes out there. Just make sre it's a good one. Also I have a relaxation CD that I have played every night when I go to bed. I have never heard more than the first track because I fall asleep so fast. These are just some thoughts and they might work for you. Also I think you are right when you say that doctors don't know everything. Contiue your research. We have to be our own patient advocates today. Also you cold tell them that you no longer want the lecture about BP. My MD said he would not mention weight anymore because I had heard it all before and it was my choice what I did with the information. Sorry this is so long. Hope some of it helps. Sandy Hi Tai, I had to reply to the blood pressure check because it reminds me of my dilemma. While I don't know if you can refuse it without nurses and doctors trying to convince you otherwise, I have heard of and do suffer from the "White Coat Syndrome"! I basically get so nervous each and every time I go to the doctor's office, actually my specialist sets of my system because I had a transplant when when I was a 12 years old. The whole ordeal was terrible for me and I felt like doctors and nurses had no desire to listen to me, so I just had to be compliant-and boy when I don't like something I'm not a compliant person! Anyways, I check my blood pressure at Supermarkets, Pharmacy's, people's home cuff machines, and its always within "normal" limits. At the doctor's office it's off the wall (even at my lowest and heaviest weight because they blame my weight). I'd be willing to listen to them more if they could do the same, but they're convinced my blood pressure needs to be managed no matter how much I try to explain it to them. I know we've had posts about finding the right doctor and that is so true. I can't help my specialist right now, with insurance co-pays and such, but I can choose my PCP's and other docs I see. So, I guess this is all to say that I too have wild blood pressure numbers because of some uninterpreted threat my subconscious most likely hasn't gotten over... nor has my conscious-self for that matter! Yes, advocate for yourself as a way of honoring and loving yourself and don't step on that scale if you don't want to! I am sure I am gaining weight because I had to buy bigger size clothes. And that has been hard, to trust my body in knowing what it needs and paying attention to it. Keep writing in with any specific questions you might have and we will share our experiences, what has worked for me or not worked. Sandy I have been reading some of the posts, but still confused about some things.
Guest guest
Thanks for your input. I will take all of this into consideration. Best wishes!C To: "IntuitiveEating_Support " <IntuitiveEating_Support >Sent: Sat, June 11, 2011 7:13:27 AM Subject: Re: Where do I start Hi, Sandy. Guest guest
I have a friend who took his BP at home for an extended time, wrote it down and then took it in to the doctor's office. This was at the doctor's request. It was normal most of the time and noting to worry about the rest. He still does it once in a while. It is worth the investment of a home testing unit. And you are so right about thin and physically fit and still have high BP. Sandy With all of the talk about bp, I wanted to share something my doc told me. I also have white coat syndrome.
