Guest guest
For me, a compulsion is getting lost in a behavior that is not for our highest good in order to care for ourselves -- relieving stress, providing comfort, whatever. I think the first step is to acknowledge that the compulsion has served a purpose for us, that it has provided care in the only way we knew how. Mimi Subject: what is compulsive eatingTo: "IntuitiveEating_Support " <IntuitiveEating_Support >Date: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 12:05 PM I would like to hear definitions of compulsive eating. I'll start. To me, compulsive eating means that I will eat anything and everything because I'm hungry, or feel the need to eat even though I'm not hungry, and eat more than what is satisfactory for me. Guest guest
For me, it's is having a thought of something that's in my house suddenly pop into my mind and be so overpowering that I can't stop thinking about it. I would often give in and eat the thing, too much, too fast and sometimes in secret. Sometimes I realized I hardly even tasted the thing while eating it so fast. Never have I felt satisfied from eating it, but often felt guilt. Another compulsive behavior is that I can't always pass up something that is offered or laying around on the counter, even if I didn't really want the thing and wasn't hungry at all. While IE helps a lot, it hasn't solved my eating disorder and I have to constantly fight this. Sunny RE: OA Tai, yes, they used to have an eating plan called grey sheet, and then they had others. It's not like that anymore. All you have to have is the desire to not eat compulsively. The IE way fits OA very nicely these days. It's definitely not a diet program. Guest guest
I'll go for that. Compulsion has provided care that nothing else could at that time. TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2011 9:28 PMSubject: Re: what is compulsive eating Mimi,Very wise!I think it's very important to acknowledge the positive role that a MOSTLY unhealthy behavior like eating compulsively has played in our lives. to pretend that it hasn't done anything positive for us means that we can't learn new behaviors to substitute for it. nature abhors a vacuum! as long as we don't substitute other forms of self care (ideally ones better adapted for our current situations), we are unlikely to give up the old behavior. The Four Day Win (Martha Beck, I believe) talks about this a lot. I found it helpful and interesting.Best,AbbyIE since 11/08 For me, a compulsion is getting lost in a behavior that is not for our highest good in order to care for ourselves -- relieving stress, providing comfort, whatever. Guest guest
HI All!,My name is ; this is my first time on this site. I have a lifetime of struggles with food, weight ...a negative behavior...the easiest way to deal with stress, even though compulsive eating creates more chaos. Thank you for your comment below that compulsive behavior is not. for our higher good. I know this, can say it myself but reading it in the context you worded below is very insightful. I am not sure how to begin...maybe just with this moment. To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2011 6:28 PMSubject: Re: what is compulsive eating Mimi,Very wise!I think it's very important to acknowledge the positive role that a MOSTLY unhealthy behavior like eating compulsively has played in our lives. to pretend that it hasn't done anything positive for us means that we can't learn new behaviors to substitute for it. nature abhors a vacuum! as long as we don't substitute other forms of self care (ideally ones better adapted for our current situations), we are unlikely to give up the old behavior. Guest guest
Hello, . I can appreciate what you are saying here -- about compulsive behavior not for our higher good. I have taken time to incorporate rational thinking into my choice of food and how I eat. It has taken me time; it usually takes most people time because it is a positive revamping of our thoughts. You can do it! I know you can.
