Virginia, Good question! I have always been weighed at the doctor's, and they never ask either - just happens right before I am brought to the exam room. When I read "but the good news is" in your email it reminded me of my own "good news" this past Sunday when I had a good look at myself in a mirror (and I was sitting at the time so my whole mid-section looked even worse) -- it got me feeling truly motivated to make some lasting changes. That image in the mirror still pops into my head (I know, it's just been a few days but it was quite a moment!) and it doesn't depress me, rather it reminds me to keep going. Admittedly, I am struggling a little bit this morning, but I am thankful for the motivation I have and the support I feel just in the few days I have been here

reading the emails.Little story about that experience on seeing myself in the mirror: when I told one of my daughters about it, she said "well, just stand up!". :o)Thanks,MargaretTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Wed, June 22, 2011 7:23:44 AMSubject: Weighing in at Doctor

When i look into the mirror, i know that i have a weight issue/problem. my previous doctor left and she understood (my fear) of seeing that dreaded number perhaps. well, she left and i have a new one now. for like 3 visits, she kept wanting me to be weighed and i kept asking why? i told her i know i am overweight, i know that i need to, why does that number

need to known ? she and the nurse said something like the insurance needs to know it so they can continue to pay. i dont know if that is true (my hub is retired military and this is the first i have heard of this). so i caved in and let her (nurse)weigh me. No, i did not look. i guess maybe the dread of seeing the infamous number........who knows......so on my follow up, i did not get weighed the second time....they didnt even ask.....Why is that? But the good news is, i sneaked a peek at the number. Well, it made me realize, it was time to begin my journey. (by changing what/how much i eat and eventually start walking....).. and i am lucky to have found this group. have a great day.

Have a great day and thanks for the emails!!

Margaret, last time I really saw myself in a window approaching a store, I was shocked at old my hairstyle made me look. I decided then and there to get it cut short. I did so, and boy am I happy I did that! Even though I hate to spend the money and time going to the hairdresser, it made a world of difference. I felt fine with my hair long, but I was absolutely shocked when I saw how old it made me look, and I decided to do something about it. Tai

Hi all, after one year of stuffing myself IE style (and I'm not sorry I did so because it taught me a great deal), I finally looked at the scale. Somehow I thought during that time, even though my clothes were getting tighter and I had to go up a size or two, I wasn't gaining weight. LOL! Can you imagine that? I knew I was gaining, but I thought every time I ate the candy, etc., that I really would not gain weight. Finally, when I weighed myself, I realized, hey, this eating everything and anything whenever I think of food is not working. LOL! So now I try to be really ready to eat, and I'm willing to eat real food. :-) Have a nice day! I love this group and everybody here.Tai

I've mentioned this before, but when you're at the doctors and don't

want to be weighed, you can always say " I'm in therapy for an eating

issue and I am not supposed to be weighed for [three months, one

year, whatever]. " It works!!!

That's a great response.  For me it turned out he didn't say anything.  His new student nurse was a little surprised but they are taught to do what ever the patient wants.

What I have done is just tell them I don't want to know. They get what they want, I get what I need. It works. However, I don't think it challenges the belief that weight is such a huge issue, and I want to start doing that. So I'm going to ask not to be weighed when I go too.Rain

I would think that that is confidential medical information. Maybe call your

insurnace company and ask. It sounds like to me that your doctor's office is

just being little robots and doing what they always do. I've heard that the

only time a doctor needs to know your weight is when prescribing medication or

if you were to go under the knife for anethesia reasons. I'd do some research

on that if I were you.

Be careful that the diet mentality isn't sneaking in because of your weighin. I

think it is great if the weighin is motivating you to make some healthier

changes, but make sure it's not to the extreme of dieting. Take it slow, maybe

add one heathy change for now and be careful of the messages you are sending to

yourself. Be gentle with yourself. Love yourself. Don't let your doctor's

visit steer you away from IE.

Rain, whatever works for you is ok.  I could see it if it was necessary to determine some aspect of treatment, like correct dosage of a medication or something, maybe like anesthesia.  Well my doctor is ok with my not getting weighed at least so far.  Sandy

I used to be the same way in that I hated to spend the money getting my hair cut

and styled and I would go 6 months to a year between cuts.

But I changed my way of thinking. As Loreal says " I AM WORTH IT! "

I love going to get my hair done. My hairdresser is like going to visit my

sister or a really good friend. It's almost like therapy time. And it's time

for just me and no one else (important if you have kids and a family) And it

makes me feel so beautiful to keep up on my hair.

And you are too. I know times are tough for a lot of people, but take the time

to get your hair styled on a regular basis because you are beautiful and you are

worth it! It will make a difference on how you think and feel about yourself if

you find a style that you feel good about and you keep it up. Often times you

can go to a cosmetology school for much cheaper than regular salons. You would

be saving money and helping someone learn their trade.

Just my thoughts.

Me too! I used to not spend time or money on my hair, but now I wouldn't go without it! I've learned that about a lot of things though - about quality. I value my things, and myself much more if I put time and money into them. And actually, this is true with food as well. I've learned to only eat quality food. It tastes so much better to start with, but also I think it helps me to savor it when I'm eating it and therefore remain conscious.RainSubject: Re: Weighing in at DoctorTo:

Sandy, re: your doctor visit, what would he say anyway if you gained or lost weight? "I see you've gained weight?" or "I see you've lost weight, that's good?" LOL ... I mean what is the point? You're doing fine ... it takes time to learn ... once you are on that ride of IE, it's like learning to love yourself. It takes time. :-) Tai

You know something, Sandy, when my doctor noticed how much weight I lost, she said: "Losing weight does not always mean your blood pressure will go down." I thought, fine, that's great ... now I can go back to eating again. :-) And so I did. I spent the next year eating anything and everything, without regard for anything but my mouth. Now that I'm back again on IE, it feels so good to do it for the right reason. That is for myself. It means freedom for me. I am so happy I learned my lesson. TaiFrom: Beaulieu

I cannot recall, Sandy, the point if she took my pressure after I gained some of the weight back. When I lost the weight, though, she was still talking about my medication thinking I was taking it, but she did not get alarmed, however, I can't remember that last time I saw her, in other words, how much I weighed that last time when she hammered the book at me. I can always call the office to ask about the weight chart because I know that the last time I saw her, she gave me a big lecture. Good question, but I can't answer you. Tai
