Guest guest
Congratulations on the new baby! Try some moleskin around the top edge of the casts. Sometimes the cotton will wear away and the cast will cut into the skin. This really seemed to help our daughter. Plus you can make the piece longer on the outside of the cast to cover poop stains and you can change it when you need to. Our ortho department gave me as much as I needed for free. You can also get it at Walmart in the Dr. Scholls foot section but it is kind of expensive if you need to change it a lot. Just an idea. I'm sure it will take all of you some time to adjust to everything but each day will get better. Hope you feel better soon! and Brooklyn bilateral cf 3/21/02 casey12312002 wrote:Hi everyone! Just wanted to post that my son was born on Friday, 7/26. His name is , and as expected, he has bilateral clubfeet. Other than that, he is the picture of health, and is a beautiful little boy. He had his first casting done yesterday, and I was a crying bundle of hormones, but the doctor was wonderful, and he tolerated it well. I will say he was up all night last night, but at 4 days old, who can tell if it's the casts or just a newborn baby? He did seem to get frustrated when he would try to lift his legs up, maybe that was a factor in the sleepless nights. On top of that, I caught a terrible virus from my three year old and had a fever and chills all night, milk came in, episiotomy aching, three year old son up and vomiting - not an easy night! I'm sure this will pass, just wanted to vent a little bit. Any one else have their babies casted at such a young age? I would appreciate any little bits of advice or tips that helped to make it more bearable. Of course, the casts are already stained after about a dozen poops, but that's the least of my concerns right now. Thanks for letting me vent! I am very happy with our doctor, he follows Ponsett's method to a T, and am completely indebted to this board for helping me to prepare for this. Guest guest
KC Congratulations. Our daughter Alaya (Bi-lat) was casted at 5 days old. She cried for the first few days. The casts were cold at first and probably uncomfortable until they dry, so we wrapped her up and held her close. It wasn't long until she was lifting them both up in the air. A few tips we discovered, were to have them put extra cotton around the top of the cast when it was applied. Then I would pull it up and wrap it over the top and tape with medical tape. This kept the cast from rubbing. We purchased boys tube socks and put them over the casts, tucking the top on the inside of the casts. This kept them from getting as messy and also banging together. They did sometimes get messy, but we just wiped them off and sometimes tucked in more gauze. We also placed a rolled towel under her knees to make it more comfortable for her. The cast days seemed to go really fast. We kept one of her casts and repaired it with plaster wrap from Joann Fabrics. As I look at it I see how far we've come and how wonderfully she is doing today. Joanne and Alaya (8-22-01) Treated by Dr. Ponseti, 4 casts and tenotomy

Guest guest
, Yeah, I'm still breastfeeding Alaya (11m). We got used to nursing with the DBB. I just leaned it up against me with my arm through it. I positioned her with her belly up against me too.

Guest guest
Congratulations on your new son! Our daughter was born with bilateral clubfoot back in Feb. 2000. Her very first casts were put on at 5 days old. She did'nt seem to mind them at all, but I remember making sure she had plenty of cotton at the tops so the casts did'nt rub on her skin and I always had oversized, cotton socks over each cast because after they dried they were very rough. The most comfortable possition sleeping for her was on her back with a rolled up towel under her knees. Make sure you don't put the rolled up towel under the heals of her casts before they are completely dry so that the pressure from leaning on the towel does'nt misshape the form that your doctor has precisely made in each cast. Dr. Ponseti gave us that little piece of advice. We always put the towel under her knees and it helped take some of the weight off. also loved being in her bouncy chair. It was comfortable for her legs and she could still see everything going on around her. It was even great for sleeping in. Hope your feeling better soon, I feel for you with being sick, having a newborn and a three year old! Our oldest was also three when was born, as it turned out, thank god for her, she was the best thing in the world for during all of her appointments and casts, shoes, etc. Neither one of them knew anything different for the longest time, I remember my oldest used to think all babies came with casts! She used to wrap things around her dolls legs so that they looked like her baby sister. Watching the two of them brightened every outlook on the whole clubfoot issue. Best wishes, Holly and home with new baby. >Hi everyone! Just wanted to post that my son was born on Friday, >7/26. His name is , and as expected, he has bilateral >clubfeet. Guest guest
KC, Congratulations on a Healthy Baby!!! Sounds like a rough few days!! Our son Caleb was in his first casts at 6 HOURS OLD! I had a C-section and had not even held him or seen his feet! I cried also!!! The advise about the socks over the casts and tucking into the top of the casts is Very good advise! This kept Caleb's casts " Poop " free and prevented rubbing. You may have to try a few pairs of sock until you find what works best for you. Remember to cut the ends off to be able to easily check those toes. Our prayers are with you! and Caleb 3-31-01 home with new baby. Hi everyone! Guest guest
Oh, absolutely! I had no problem nursing with the FAB/DBB. It was definitely awkward at first, but we both adjusted within a short time. Rose was 7 months when she first got the FAB, though, and we made it 10 more months. I remember one of my crowning moments was nursing her and putting the bar on at the same time! After awhile that bar becomes such a part of you and your baby's life that you don't remember what it was like without it.
