It is interesting you brought this up.

I took an art therpay class a few years ago and that is how I learned about my eating disorder. through art therapy I learned, when I cannot deal with my feelings I want to eat and constantly eat. eating is the best way to run away from life,stress,fatigue,etc..

Using art, I can connect with inner child better and be kind and compassionate to myself.

Hey Everyone,I'm searching for creative outlets to help me both draw out my emotions and feelngs and cope with them and not use food.I've already mentioned in one post- a reply to Casey's proverb- that I use Proverbs, a book in the Bible, to cope, but I'm looking to all art - poetry, music, books, painting sculpture. Experiencing arts hits the nerves that I numb by complusively eating and I want to learn to experience them- life at it's fullest! I'm not sure why, but seeing a painting that really moves me, or reading a poem that seems to be speaking directly to my soul is the only thing that can be better than a snack.I'm not really an artist myself- but i'm an appreciater!Anyone who has any advice recommendations is thanked in advance!!

It sounds like you really appreciate visual arts, so maybe try getting some art books, or a sketch book, paints etc. to start playing with your creative side. And, towards the non-visual side you could play with writing. Keep a journal or even get a book with writing exercises for fiction or non-fiction writing, which give you prompts and ideas to write about or play with.

I love how you're exploring your creative side! I think it can offer a great way to access and work through our emotions, and this makes me think I should try something similar. Thanks for the idea!

I too use art as therapy, and poetry, storytelling, music, laughing(even when I don't feel like it).  Laughing or just smiling tricks the brain into thinking you are happy and releases the feel-good endorphins.  And you don't have to be an artist, poet or any of the above.  Like you said just enjoying looking at and appreciating any type of creativity can produce the feel-good, don't need to eat help we seek. I am involved in a poetry group, storytelling group, and just participated in my second art show. That kept me so busy I almost forgot to eat and I had a lot of fun. I love looking at anything creative too and admire the person who can do that. I went to an art therapy group at a nursing home and what we did was so simple I am going to show my 5 year old grandson.

It sounds like visual arts are great for you... for me, I like to blog. And if you publicly " follow " other peoples's blogs, readers will find you.

Best,

Abby
