Guest guest
Hi all, I am new here and trying to wrap my mind around the no-diet mentality. My problem is that I am very sugar sensitive. By that, I mean that I have been off sweets and sweat sauces, etc. for 2 years. Not to lose weight, but when I do eat sweats I am irritable, foggy, irrational, etc. for a few days afterward, also craving strongly more sweets. This doesn't apply to fruit, probably because of the fiber, but it involves the natural sugar substitutes like agave, honey, maple syrup, etc. So, I am thinking that to be on this program, and still be healthy, that I need to relegate sugar to a different category from food, like maybe as a toxic (to me) substance, like smoking or alcohol. But then since I crave it, I'm wondering if not having it when I want it will mess up my intuitive eating overall and I won't be able to trust myself enough to win back my real hunger cues. Any advice?
Guest guest
Gillian, our list founder, talks about foods that " don't honor our bodies. " It sounds like sugar falls into this category for you.I imagine that treating sugar as a food that doesn't honor you means that yo don't outlaw it completely -- because this tends to only add to the appeal -- but to try to eat it carefully. what this means to me is making sure you ONLY eat it when you REALLY want it (not just because it's more convenient than another snack, for example), and perhaps being careful to try to pair it with other foods, like protein, when you do decide to eat it, to lessen the impact on your body. and also, i would recommend eating it very consciously -- savoring every mouthful -- so you are able to recognize when you are enjoying it and when the enjoyment stops. let us knwo how it goes! and welcome to the group!best, abbyIE since 11/08 Hi all, I am new here and trying to wrap my mind around the no-diet mentality. Guest guest
I'm still working on a lot of that too. I drink Diet soda and use Splenda but I believe they have a negative effect on the body. And if I eat a sweet, I seem to crave more and more. When I do eat sweets/fruit, any carb, I do better putting a protein with it and then I have less side effets like being groggy, tired, etc. I especially found that when I usd to go out and have panckes with lots of syrup I would feel miserable for hours. I learned to drink a LOT of water and that helped. Now I just don't eat pancakes because they make me feel so lousy. And the same for donuts. I really can't give you any advice but I am sure someone will have some good input. Keep posting. Sandy Hi all, I am new here and trying to wrap my mind around the no-diet mentality. Guest guest
Hi, MistyMisso -- I would imagine that it would be difficult to ban added sugar entirely from one's diet, since many forms of added sugar work their way into various manufactured foods, not just the candy, and other obvious goodies like that. Welcome to the board, btw. Tai
Guest guest
Hi again Misty. I would like to know if you are always craving sugary foods, or if it comes and goes. Guest guest
I can be quite sugar sensitive, too, though i do love sweet things! I feel my best when I have sweets in small amounts-maybe just a small cookie, a dozen m and m's, or I've recently tried some sugar free things, like ice cream, and seem to do okay with those. For me, it's all about how I feel, and when I overdo it on the sweets, I feel just awful! But for me to completely ban it is just setting myself up for disaster.
