Well, the "funny" thing is the day I wrote this, I went for a very slow, short walk after work. I started feeling a pull in my left knee. OK, I guess I wasn't listening to my body as much as I thought I was! So yesterday I did no walking. Today I will see how I feel after work, and possibly try the shortest loop I can from my house. If I don't do it today, I'll try it tomorrow. So even when we are listening to our body, we can get overuse injuries. Especially since those overuse injuries can start slowly, over time. There's the idea of the Nutritional Ally (is that the right term?) that uses what you know about nutrition to HELP you, not harm you. I suppose I should've used my Exercise Ally to know not to increase my distance so quickly. But hey, lesson learned, I suppose. (Not saying that it

might not have to be relearned again in the future!)

I can't thank you enough for writing. I have been stuck in a "should" cycle for as long as I can remember in almost every facet of life.

For several years now that has been exercise. To be honest I don't know how to get out of the should mentality. I don't even know what intuition IS when it comes to exercise and movement. That may sound funny, but I don't know what my body wants, what it is saying or really even what it can really handle or when I'm pushing too hard. Thank you for your experiential encouragement!

Thanks. I'll give it a try.  I also have a whole list that sound good or interesting at least.  And I would like to re-learn some ballroom dancing.  I did that in Jr. High and loved it but married a man who never would dance.  Now I am dating someone who never learned much but would like to go dancing.  I think we could learn some basic steps together and they have Senior dances here all the time.  They even do some country western.. The electric slide and Boot scooting boogy. I'm not sure my balance is good enough for those yet but could try again. Sandy

, what a wonderful example you have given of Intuitive Movement!  Thank you for sharing that with us :)

Sandy, where I live (WA) it's sometimes too cold to go walking or biking in the winter.  Dance DVDs definitely can help.  My favorite beginning Belly Dance DVD is " Belly Dance For Fitness And Health Level 1 " with Kellie Marie.  I think Netflix has it.

I am forever making that mistake.  If I ride my bike for one loop around my park every night for three nights, then I go four the next night and always end up with some minor injury and have to give it up for weeks.  Same if I walk.  I think I will learn some day, but when I'm doing it, it feels so good and no pain. So I want to do more. Last year at this time I could barely walk at all due to fluid on my brain and terrible balance.  With the shunt in now I just feel like I could walk miles and miles. Maybe some day.

I continue to struggle with this. I think the body and brain don't always agree about what feels good. And you think, yay, I'm exercising, I feel great, it MUST be good for me.Alas, not always.

Try to throw in some caution and proceed SLOWLY. not to say you shouldn't exercise, but increase slowly. for running, the rule of thumb is no more than an increase of any ONE of the following: distance, speed, and frequency. so if you were running 7 miles a week, you shouldn't run more than 8 miles the following week AND you shouldn't increase the speed or frequency that week, either.

running is harder on the body than walking, so i'm not saying the same rule applies... but just that " exercising " caution is important too, even while LOVING the feeling of being active!

please don't be discouraged! just slow down a LITTLE. " hurry slowly " as the great runner Grete Waitz, who died last month, always said. best,

Thanks.  I'm not even at the walking around the block stage, about 15 minutes limit.  For the rest of the summer, here until October, I will have to do any exercising inside or at the pool.  Even the pollen is against that.  I went for a short bike ride, 10 min. maybe and am feeling the allergy and pain in my injured thigh.  Some days I do a lot better but the heat is a real obstacle. When I continue to remind myself that last year at this time I thought I was headed to a Nursing Home, I am just so grateful for what I an do and so excited about everything.  That's when I can forget that I have limits/obstacles and find alternatives.

I just had one of those aha moments about indoor exercising.  I already thought of Neflix but then realized there are hundreds of web sites too to watch and learn for free. I may end up canceling my Netflix.  I forget I can use the internet for just about anything. A friend who is new to computers and the internet is having such a wonderful time discovering a whole new world that he got me excited too and out of my rut. I'm really excited.  He and I are going swimming in the pool for the first time this year.  We don't do much real swimming but at least it's active. I'll let you know what I find online that works for me. Right now I am getting ready for an art show and have to finish two paintings and get them framed.  This is my second show and last time I sold my first painting. I also would like to get back to writing my books and getting them published online, for free.  Only cost is if I want to buy any of them. I've done 6 or 7 short little ones and they came out so beautiful.  It is a lot of work though so I have a hard time gearing up for that. Sorry this is so long.  I just got real excited and you all help with opening my mind to choices I have missed.  Thanks. Sandy
