Yes, since really tuning into my hunger cues I find that I don't actually get hungry that often. Sadly, this is depressing to me! I love to eat and finding that I shouldn't be eating as often as I have been makes me sad. So now I'm working on other things to do besides eat. I'm realizing that I made eating my hobby so I need to find something else to busy myself besides eating!

When I first began intuitive eating, I was so lost when it came to hearing my own hunger and fullness. I spent almost a year avoiding hunger at all costs, that when I finally began it was really hard for me to identify it. So I decided the best way was to wait until I could actually feel the physical signs, like my stomach growling.I still do that a little, but one thing that really surprised me was how infrequently I actually felt hungry during the day. Sometimes I would only feel my stomach growl twice a day. Even now, I'm a little surprised by how I don't get hungry often and I can be moderately full quickly. It's a bit strange. Does anyone else experience that?

So true...Same for me...I look forward to go home after work and eat even when I am not hungry...If i dont eat I dont know what to do....In good days I go for a walk but If I stay in the house then I feel like I have to eat...That is my challenge these days...stay in the house and not have to eat....

Maybe this is annoying to hear... if so, I apologize. But I am mostly home now, waiting for the baby to arrive (I'm 3 days past my due date) and I am SO TIRED of eating! I feel like I am hungry every two hours, and i'm SICK OF IT. nothing sounds good, so i have just a few foods in the house. i feel like eating has become such a CHORE. and i have to do it so frequently.

which is ironic because i remember when i was where you guys are, and looked forward to eating. eating was an important bookend to my day. but now, not having much of a schedule, it feels so different.

i hope i look forward to eating again soon. i think it's not uncommon to have both experiences at different times during the IE journey. anyone else feel tired and bored of eating?

Yup, that's my experience exactly. I'm so unsure of what " hungry " really is,

what with all my former urges to eat (craving, emotional upsets, mealtime,

seeing or smelling food, etc.) that I am waiting until my stomach growls.

That's so clearly hunger, I have no qualms. Weirdly enough, after a few days of

waiting for it, I now rarely have those other urges - except after I eat before

that growl arrives. When I eat when it's convenient, because I'm " getting

there " on hunger, I have no idea when to stop, because my stomach isn't sending

me signals, so there's no " end of signal " to notice. And then I've found I keep

wanting more and more and more.

And it is a bit shocking how rarely I actually feel hunger signals. The first

couple of weeks, it was often only twice a day. The third week, I sometimes

felt hunger three times, and really began to see that when I ate past " not

hungry " or had something heavy (fat, protein), my next hunger took longer, often

much longer, to arrive. I've begun making sure to include some protein and/or

fat so I can do more before I " have to " eat again.

I'm also shocked by how little food takes away that hunger. I'm now routinely

having only half or 3/4 of a sandwich or burger, sharing with my toddler or

growing teenager. Whereas I used to start with 1/2-1 cup on each of my sides,

and then taking seconds often, now I start with 1/4 cup and only rarely have

seconds. Yet if I waited until my stomach growled before I started, I am

satisfied and don't even fantasize about more. There is a moment of

disappointment that I'm not hungry and so shouldn't have more of the yummy food.

And it IS a bit difficult to get up and leave the family at the table, but I've

found out that it's best to get away from the proximity and the sight and smell

of the food. My husband is being very supportive on this.

I used to think about food a LOT, and it's amazing how much " air time " is

clearing up.

I've also found out that if I'm wondering whether to eat something small before

bed, because I'm " getting there " on hunger, I can actually forget the whole

thing if I just go to bed.

But if I do eat before my stomach growls, I have trouble stopping and then keep

wanting to get one more little thing, and the next thing I know, my stomach is

uncomfortable with too much food.

Shoku,

We're being given back the opportunity to have a real life! What have you

always wanted to do? What hobbies did you dream of? Or like me, what projects

haven't you finished around the house? I've got LOTS of chores and abandoned

craft projects I am beginning to work on. I used to just sit and read and eat

and cook and eat. Now I don't want to cook, because then I eat whether I'm

hungry or not. I'm starting to think about a bunch of new projects, but have

lots to finish up first.

You wait until you are breastfeeding Abby - then you really get hungry despite

having little energy to prepare anything....

No not over eating here yet - still too early in the journey for me. But I think

that it's important to really savour foods you enjoy and ignore foods that you

don't so that the eating experience is truly satisfying.

Hope that wee baby decides to make an easy appearance soon!

Abby,

I often feel annoyed when I get hungry and don't feel like figuring out what to

eat, especially when it's not at a family mealtime, so it'll just be me, and I'd

rather continue doing whatever I'm busy with. Of course, that does NOT happen

if there's something delectable in the house, ready to eat when next I get

hungry.

Rish, the thing is, aren't you supposed to feel a little hunger with IE? Or maybe I have that wrong. TaiSubject: Re: What's going on with my hunger? To: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 9:01 PM

Rish, the thing is, aren't you supposed to feel a little hunger with IE? Or maybe I have that wrong. TaiSubject: Re: What's going on with my hunger? To: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 9:01 PM

This is a VERY helpful post. Thank you!!!

I spent almost a year avoiding hunger at all costs, that when I finally began it was really hard for me to identify it. So I decided the best way was to wait until I could actually feel the physical signs, like my stomach growling.

Hey, Abby, I haven't been keeping up lately, but I hope everything is fine! TaiSubject: Re: What's going on with my hunger? To: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 11:11 PM

Abby,

I often feel annoyed when I get hungry and don't feel like figuring out what to eat, especially when it's not at a family mealtime, so it'll just be me, and I'd rather continue doing whatever I'm busy with. Of course, that does NOT happen if there's something delectable in the house, ready to eat when next I get hungry.
