Guest guest
The two " poetic " ways I look at my mother: Nada is 90% wonderful and 10% poison. Unfortunately, 10% poison still kills you. Nada is like a birthday cake: loads of fun on occasion, but incredibly unhealthy if you have it every day. Great work on claiming back the music! I have no doubt that the song will be wonderful. Blessings, Karla > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. I joined this group a while back because I have a BPD and NPD father. For years he prevented me from doing music... the very thing I love and genuinely need to breathe. Lately, I leave him in his own selfish little world and stay in my own little world of becoming myself and discovering who he prevented me from being. I was just wondering if maybe you'd be willing to share how you'd describe the personality of your parent? I'm writing a song about borderline personality disorder. I've got a chorus, melody (to the chorus) and instrumentals to go with it. However, I don't have the rest of it written. I want it to be as accurate as possible so that when people hear it... they are able to almost help them identify the bpd person in their life if you get my drift. > > You don't have to but if you'd like to share, I'd really appreciate it. Guest guest
I have a bunch of poems about it where I compare her to different things - or how she saw me - like she used me as her windbreak, her apron (I protected her, parented her), a mouse, twitching nose and darting eyes, and then another where I talk about a birthmark I have and compare it to the hand print of a parent who squeezes so hard they leave marks. I ended up getting the fingerprint concept tattooed on my arm. Let me know if that helps - those were the ones that worked for me. If I can find them I can DM them to you. I'd be shy to post them for all to see. Yeah, music was what I wanted to do too, but a few years pre kindergarten of my piano teacher mother slamming the lid of the piano on my hands, and that dream died. . . Guest guest
Hi sweetsoulmusic! That is so amazing that you're writing a song about BPD. I just started working on this project myself! That is awesome. Good for you. I, too, would love to hear it when you're done. I have a couple of starts but am not as far as you yet. I have this one where I tune the low E string down to a D to round out the D chord. It's beautiful on the guitar. Enjoy the music; it is healing to the soul! -Coal Miner's Daughter > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. Guest guest
Good Lord. That was unconscionable. So many of the things our nadas did to us would be considered criminal child abuse if she did them to someone *else's* child, or criminal assault and battery if she did them to an adult. Your nada would have done some jail time if she'd angrily slammed the piano key cover down on the fingers of one of her pupils, you can believe it. (IF the act was witnessed by another adult; I don't think a child would be believed if nada was good at explaining the injury away as an " accident. " ) A mother who would deliberately slam a piano key cover down on her baby's hands is severely mentally ill and too dangerously emotionally dysregulated to be raising a child. I hope you give yourself back the gift of music and will experience the joy of performing and/or creating music in spite of what she did to you. You deserve it. To me, taking away something as deeply enriching to the soul as music is the worst aspect of this act of abuse. Making your little child associate playing the piano with pain and fear is like... soul rape. -Annie PS: Sudden, unexpected punishments like that are what gave me ptsd symptoms > > > > > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. Guest guest
Thank you! I'm definitely going to read through it. Hopefully it doesn't take me very long to write the song. The style of instrumentals to it are completely perfect for it.... got a dark feel but its still upbeat. It's got a feel/sound similar this old school Sara Bareilles song actually: I will definitely let you hear it when its done! > > Check out the thread " Three lines or less. Guest guest
Those are some good points. Thank you so much for sharing. And thank you for the vote of confidence hehe! It's got a dark upbeat feel...perfect for the subject. I shared this in another reply but if you want to hear the direction of the song... its got a feel/sound similar to this old school sara bareilles song: > > > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. Guest guest
I added those to my notes. Its up to you if you feel comfortable about sharing your story and what not. Wow your mother started very early with discouraging you. Hopefully it didn't scar you from music too much or the piano. There are plenty of other instruments out there to play. My dad was nice to me until I was 7 or 8... aka when I got a mind of my own. He thought he could make me into whatever he wanted, and the older I got the more abusive and angry at me he got. In fact, I'm working with a moderately big-time producer (based on who he's worked with in the past... he's working for free. He wants an artist who can sell really well to pull him up to the top of the food chain, he chose me.) and I let my parents listen to my new track on black friday. My mom was being very nice about it. However, my dad totally didn't give a crap. He didn't pay attention to it. In fact, he talked over it the entire time about his own creative project idea. *sigh* They never grow up or realize there is a world outside themselves. > > > > > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. Guest guest
How awesome!! It's very therapeutic in a way. What style of music are you writing yours in? No one knows what genre my music is yet... but its a bunch of elements from all of the soulful genres. It's got my own flavor. > > > > I'm a musician singer/songwriter in the soulful type genres. Guest guest
I listened to the link you put up. I LOVED the style of that music; soulful is definitely an appropriate description. Wow! Do you sing like that? My style is more conventional. I write blues, rock, country and folk mostly. I tend to use common time signatures and lyrics that are easy to hear and understand. The main BPD song I'm working on now is like an inspirational folk style I guess. -Coal Miner's Daughter > > How awesome!! It's very therapeutic in a way. Guest guest
Love it. Merle Haggard is THE BEST! So... To the tune of " I'm Proud To Be a Coal Miner's Daughter " by Loretta Lynn, of course: " I wish that I'd been anyone else's daughter I'm sure that hell itself couldn't burn much hotter We didn't have fun We didn't have love That's one thing nada made sure of I think we all grew up like Harry Potter " Tag ending* " And now that I'm LC, I think, why bother?
