Hi

We're on the trial too - classical diet at Great Ormond Street.

Francesca is doing well.

Constipation has always been a problem for Francesca, and I tried her

with lactulose for about 3 months before starting the diet. I took

her off, as I don't think it did anything anyway, and there's a big

question mark about whether or not it affects the diet.

I started magnesium citrate following advice from this group and it

works! I use the Kirkman Laboratories magnesium citrate soluble

powder. I give her a very heaped half teaspoon in her breakfast

drink and again at tea time. If I think she's backing up, I give a

little bit more and a bowel movement results every time! You soon

get to know how much is too much!!!

Francesca had tonic clonics and absences which seem (fingers firmly

crossed) to be controlled by the diet - the Epilim definitely did

work for the tonic clonics, but the diet has seemingly taken over.

She also has myoclonic jerks - she still does have these seizures but

they're about half of what they were pre diet. I'm convinced once

the Epilim is completely out of her system we'll have a chance to

fine-tune further to gain better control of these seizures too. Ever

the optimist!!!

Another Mum from GOSH, Nicola, is doing the MCT diet for her son

- I was very jealous when she told me recently that they'd

made bread for him. I have managed pancakes using the Atkins Bake

Mix, so maybe I could try bread, but Francesca's carb allowance is

pretty low...

What seizures does your daughter have? I gather things are going

well so far???

My daughter (le) has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome - meaning she has

all types of seizure, the ones we want to get rid of are the damaging

ones namely the drop attacks, tonic's and tonic clonics, to reduce

our visits to A & E. The drops seem to have gone although topiramate

prior to starting seemed to do that, the number of tonic's and tonic

clonics seem reduced but the main benefit is that their effects are

reduced, recovery is quicker and she is sooo much brighter and with

it. Incontinence is also reduced (thank goodness), still incontinent

but instead of 4/5 changes of cloths, bedding etc and washing carpets

and furniture its down to about 2 or 3 times a day.

I am still hoping that we will manage much greater control of the

seizures with the diet, it was a really bad time to start doing it as

I haven't got much time to dedicate to getting it right at the

moment, even though I think we are doing fab considering (I am doing

my finals of a law degree, exams in 21 days time). When I have a

more time I hope to make it work even better, by altering eating

times, to attempt to keep ketones level.

Any idea how well the MCT diet is working for the other lady you know.

Welcome to the list Ann,

Maybe not exactly that reaction, but a number of kids went on a complete hunger

strike. The intro diet is recommended for 2-5 days. 4-5 days for those with

bad diarrhea. Others can go with 2-3 days. After that you can introduce some

other coked, peeled fruits and veggies. There is a great table at

hi ann,

i just read your post about your 8 year old non-verbal son. i, too have an 8

year old non-verbal son who has been on the diet 7 months. the great news is,

he is eating a wide variety of wonderful foods which in the beginning i thought

was impossible. he is doing beautifully in many many areas which i attribute to

the diet and attempts at healing the gut. the not so great news is that he is

still terribly apraxic and his speech has not improved. pleas e- mail me

Welcome Kathy! I have to say that it sounds like you have such a positive outlook, I'm sure you will only be happy that you started this IE " journey. " And I think its wonderful that you have a dietitian friend who recommends the process. We have a couple of dietitians in this group, and I with more would advocate Intuitive Eating! I've been " doing " IE for about 2 years now and I've only been happy and grateful that I discovered this solution to all of my body image and food problems. I really do know how you feel about having eating plans and food rules " floating around in your head " ! I hope we can offer you a lot of support.

Welcome. Glad to have you with us. My story is a little different as I was overweight as long as I can remember.  I can still see the picture of myself in a Brownie uniform and how fat I was. I too have done the yo-yo dieting and am up to my heaviest.  Although I haven't weighed my self I have had to keep buying bigger clothes. I am going to focus on the health and exercise aspects more I think. Keep posting.  We all help each other. Sandy

 

Hi!  I'm new to Intuitive Eating and new to this group (any group for that matter) so thought I would introduce myself.  A friend's dietician recommended the book Intuitive Eating to her and she then recommended it to me.  I'm on Chapter 9 and see myself all over this book. 

 

A little back ground, when I was growing up I never had to worry about dieting or what I ate but I still had a bad body image.  I was never thin enough...looking back, I know that I was very thin.  As I became an adult, I was also doing the latest diet trend not because I needed to but because of the negative body image.  Over the last 26 years, I have yo-yo dieted and lost and gained weight to get to be 60 lbs overweight. 

 

I am to the point now that I have so many diets/eating plans floating in my head that I didn't know what to follow or where to go from here.  Then I started reading Intuitive Eating.  I am where all those people in the book started out.  There are so many things in the book that I have said or done or felt.  I actually remember telling my friend not too long ago that I eat just to eat and that I'm not even sure I know what " hungry " feels like.  I know this is the lifestyle that I want to live.  I want a healty relationship with my body and the food I eat.

 

I'm hoping between the book and the support group, I'm able to do that...live this lifestyle and not restrict myself or badger myself with guilty feelings about what I should, must, ought, need to, supposed to or have to do.

I'm hoping between the book and the support group, I'm able to do that...live this lifestyle and not restrict myself or badger myself with guilty feelings about what I should, must, ought, need to, supposed to or have to do.

Welcome Terry (or should we just go with Homer?!?). Sounds like you have come to

the right place. Do jump right in and get your needs met too. My only brush with

the nuke field was a temp job drafting for GE's nuclear division way back in the

1970s. And de ja vu too re sub service, my dear hubby was on pig boats in the

60s. Looking forward to reading more from you.

I see now, I was very obsessive about it, and my working out was excessive. I

kept the weight off for a year, which was very surprising to me, since I stopped

restrictive dieting. I was actually following a form of intuitive eating, but

didn't really know it at the time. After that year my work schedule had changed,

and I started back to School to get my Master's Degree, and my poor eating

habits returned. I saw my weight slowly over 2 years return to 270 pounds. I'd

attempt diets, and have limited success, and once again that seesaw would

inevitibly swing higher. I just couldn't understand how I could have been so

successful before, and not now. I purchased the Intuitive eating book over a

year ago, and started to read it, but as I started reading and seeing that it

wasn't a diet book, I put it down. I wasn't looking for a real solution. I was

looking for my next diet. That magical one that would finally work. Well, a year

later and I weigh more than last year. I never found that diet. I picked up the

book again a few days ago, and read the entire thing. I was finally ready to

find a solution to my issues with food. I really enjoyed the book. The part that

I found interesting was how they accurately described all of the odd little

things I do when I'm dieting. The all or nothing mentality I had, the binge

eating etc..... Pretty much everything they described I could relate to.

Everything they said about intuitive eating just made sense too. Ironically it

just seemed intuitively obvious. I'm looking forward to learning all I can about

intuitive eating. I figured the best way to do that is to talk to the people

actually doing it. I look forward to sharing ideas with you all.

Hey, nuke, thanks for posting. I think many of us are looking for that magical cure. Again, I bought ANOTHER diet book at Goodwill (real cheap), thinking maybe THIS ONE will 'cure' me. The 'low glycemic' diet. :-) But, of course, as soon as reality hit (about 1/2 hour later), I knew it was probably a waste of my $2.99. Oh well. Yes, I cannot diet, I know it now before I even start "another one." So, despite the fact that I come on here and complain about myself, I am learning to respect my body signals. (Not easy for me.) Maybe I respect it 2 out of 8 times, but it's better than 0 out of 8 times, and I hope and pray it will get better. The first thing I did was recognize my hunger signals. I cannot always wait to eat because I am traveling with my husband now, and whatever his "signals" are, they are

different than mine, also choice of restaurants, but I do my best, and the big thing I'm noticing where I'm changing is that I am more able to STOP EATING NOW when I am no longer hungry at the dinner table. This change is just starting, so I'm not too proficient at this, but it happened automatically recently for the first time, so that makes me kind of happy (despite that I'm probably gaining weight, although I'm no longer weighing myself, a losing proposition to weigh myself).
