Katcha, I think part of mine is habit too, and how I was raised.  Mom made wonderful desserts and we all knew not to eat too much dinner because dessert was coming.  I like your idea of picking the fruit first. Yesterday at the buffet I did take a salad first. Sandy

Sandy I love that phrase - dessert mentality! And I really do know what you mean by it - the 'finish' of a meal. For me this is probably a combo of 1) eating too fast (not letting satisfaction register) and 2) old desire to have a 'sweet' come heck or high water! (diet mentality/restriction bells ringing big time). I so like the fresh fruit when I find it that I select it FIRST, before I even eat any entrees. But that doesn't mean that I won't 'add' a dessert if I want that after too ;-)

Jane, Once in a while I eat dessert first and it is nice to do that.  Sandy

My two cents worth on this whole discussion is that yes, fruit can sometimes fill that urge for sweets, and I like fruit, but if I want a dessert, I'm going to eat it FIRST so I know my hunger won't be past before I get it. I am so done with the clean your plate club in order to " earn " dessert! Jane

Right on, Jane! Isn't it amazing how strange it feels to not have to " earn " food, or to start with the " good stuff " first?
