Guest guest
Thanks for the info about the Baker's cysts. One showed up on me in the MRI I had done before my Jan. operation, although I hadn't felt a lump. I'm worried about her advice to avoid weight bearing activities. Did she mean while the Baker's cysts clear up? Because it's vitally important for women to engage in weight bearing activities to avoid osteoporosis, even if they're taking HRT. Thanks to my inactivity over the lat few yeas, I've shrunk 3/4 " !! I'm not a doc, but it seems to me that since the cysts are benign, if they're not hurting enough to prevent you from hiking, etc., you should keep on doing it. Of course, you should consult an OS first (you might have a little meniscal tear & not know it), but since the PT isn't a doctor I'd take her advice with a grain of salt. Ann On my last post I had shared how well I was doing after 3 years of pain and inactivity. In recent months I was walking more and even doing some hiking. It felt great to be outdoors enjoying life again. All I had to do was tape my knees and I was ready to hit the road. Anyway, about 3 weeks ago I noticed that I was beginning to feel some pain on the backside of both legs (where the knee bends) A few days later I felt a hard lump in that same area. It even hurt just sitting. I went to the doctor and he said he believed it was Bakers Cysts which are usually caused by a torn miniscus or osteoarthritis. I really didn't believe that I was suffering from either of those 2 problems so I called My PT. She asked me if I had been more active lately. I said that I had and she thought that was the reason for the cysts. She informed me that the fluid that normally lubricates the knees was now settling in the back of my legs. Her advice was to ice every time I do any walking and to limit the amount I do. She reminded me that walking is a weight bearing activity and that I need to avoid as much weight bearing activities as possible. I'm 5'9 and weigh 130 so I don't need to lose weight.I asked her if wearing tape for extended periods of time could cause it but she didn't think so. I hope this information may help someone else.
