What's funny about the weighing thing is that many of us have found that discovering weight LOSS can derail us from IE as easily as weight GAIN! for very different reasons, of course, but still... just goes to show that the scale really can't help us much.

good for you for realizing so quickly that the scale was a pitfall!best, abby

Sumani, Good for you! Sandy

So I got rid of all my diet books and my scale.  I had forgotten about a scale that my husband hid from me a few months ago and I found it this morning while cleaning out a closet.  Of course I just couldn't resist weighing myself.  I was drawn to that scale like an alcoholic is drawn to drink.  When I saw that I had lost 2 pounds in 4 days I was downright giddy, but then I realized just how horrified I would have been if the number had been different.  It would have ruined my day and I probably would have binged to make myself feel better.  How sick is that?  Long story short...the second scale has been brought out with the rest of the garbage and will be picked up shortly.  Now I just to realize that if I continue to eat only when physically hungry, and if I exercise daily to stay healthy, my weight will take care of itself.  Period.  Have a great day!!

I'm kind of struggling with the weight loss thing. Since I've started intuitive

eating I've noticed that it's easier for me to eat smaller portions, and I'm

fighting the urge to undereat. I haven't weighed myself in a few weeks, but in

the back of my head I still think about it...any advice?

Rish, the majority of the posts on weighing one's self are along the 'don't do

it line!' But each of us is different and there have been members who weigh for

'statistical' reasons (they liken to blood pressure readings). If you want to

read a few (must be hundreds here really), just use the Search feature with

weighing or scale as the words to look for. Personally I do NOT weigh myself as

I find that misdirects me off my IE focus. I use my 'comfort' feedback as my

measure of how my body is doing.

Best wishes - Katcha

IEing since March 2007

I'm not trying to avoid the scale as I have a different view and I want to make it less important to me. So I ignore the point whatever to make it seem less scientific (which it really isn't anyway) but what I wanted to tell you is that it will get better and you will have days when you eat less and other days when you eat more and it is all really OK. GL :)

The scale piece is something that's on my mind a lot, especially with non-IE friends that like to bemoan their few lbs weight gain or are constantly facebooking their 2 lb weight loss on their shiny new diet.(I do track my weight, but I feel I can look at the numbers dispassionately.)I don't understand beating yourself up for a few lbs weight gain, because I know what is often REALLY behind the weight gain, just like I don't get celebrating a few lbs weight loss after starting that shiny new diet (that never lasts.)I have a Tanita, and it tells me body fat % and water %.

I see my weight go up a day or two after eating out (high sodium in restaurant meals), consuming alcohol, or eating carbohydrate rich meals..anything that will make me retain. Likewise, I see the water % go up.Even starting a new workout routine can make you retain!I also see the weight go down (and water %) if I've been diligent about taking in fluids (and so my body will stop retaining so much) or have had a really good sweaty workout or (no fun) been sick.

But at the end of a week or so, it generally evens out.I actually like to use the numbers to remind me to drink more water! I'm working on better hydration. So, please don't let the weight ups and downs ruin your day. We naturally fluctuate, even when honoring our hunger and moving our bodies. Our weights weren't meant to stay 100% constant.Sara

Now I'm lusting for your Tanita :) LOL! You're absolutely right and I'm not going to get nuts over a number anymore. It's just silly!

Sara and Sumami -- It's upsetting enough to continue battling with the weight/eating issue. I don't need the scale any longer to augment my anxiety. LOL! I was watching an infomercial for Nutrisystem and saw whatshername, the spokesperson for it, say that she never weighs herself, but tells how she's doing by how her clothes feel. I tell how I'm doing at this point by how I'm doing, LOL. I am really working on not judging myself, but I must say I feel better when I'm not carrying around so much weight. However, I'm working with it, learning to accept it -- in other words, learning to accept who I am. Sara -- when you say they "bemoan" how they feel, I can relate to that, because I am simply learning to not talk about certain subjects or cause for anxiety, with my friends. I do talk about it if briefly sometimes, but that few pounds here and there really does get me because many people bemoan a few pounds weight gain, and they will talk about it. I remember the change of concept I had when I was a teenager about food -- many moons ago -- and life, society, and advertising continues pushing us. I appreciate IE for what it is, we will continue doing our best best and then some. For me the scale is no longer important but I don't want to know or see how much I weigh, so I got rid of mine. I have reached that point. What is the point of having the scale anyway? TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Thursday, August 4, 2011 9:30 PMSubject: Re: Re: Scale war

I'm kind of struggling with the weight loss thing. Since I've started intuitive eating I've noticed that it's easier for me to eat smaller portions, and I'm fighting the urge to undereat. I haven't weighed myself in a few weeks, but in the back of my head I still think about it...any advice?---

Interesting you should mention that, Abby, about weight loss being a factor as well as weight gain. It's true in my case. TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Thursday, August 4, 2011 1:10 PMSubject: Re: Scale war

I find that when I undereat for a few days, for whatever reason -- illness, hot weather, etc -- my body naturally compensates and i eat more for a few days to even out my weight. So my thought would be that undereating isn't likely to pay off in the long run... so why try?

That said, eating less because you are SATISFIED but not yet full... as was mentioned in The Overfed Head posts... I think that COULD, in the long run, result in (SLOW, barely perceptible even) weight loss. but i think it will only work if you make sure you are not hungry. otherwise you will compensate for it.

I'm kind of struggling with the weight loss thing. Since I've started intuitive eating I've noticed that it's easier for me to eat smaller portions, and I'm fighting the urge to undereat. I haven't weighed myself in a few weeks, but in the back of my head I still think about it...any advice?

I find that when I undereat for a few days, for whatever reason -- illness, hot weather, etc -- my body naturally compensates and i eat more for a few days to even out my weight. So my thought would be that undereating isn't likely to pay off in the long run... so why try?

That said, eating less because you are SATISFIED but not yet full... as was mentioned in The Overfed Head posts... I think that COULD, in the long run, result in (SLOW, barely perceptible even) weight loss. but i think it will only work if you make sure you are not hungry. otherwise you will compensate for it.
