Guest guest
Yup, I can relate to what you're saying, Evan. Savoring my food took me a while. That is why I sometimes say I'm looking for the perfect meal, because it just isn't out there unless you hit it right or if you go to a megabucks restaurant. I'm thinking recently how nice simple cooked vegetables can taste, but then again, you gotta have the right flavoring if you're going to do it right. It's good you're really getting in tune with your taste buds, though. Do you cook for yourself, or go out to eat? I am literally writing down at various restaurants what food I enjoy there and what food I don't because I forget if i don't go there continually. When I really taste my food I become (my stomach just rumbled) aware of how much I don't like what I'm eating. I mean, I find that I'm really critical. It should be more this way, too much salt, etc. This is even when I'm eating really good food. I also feel this very raw, kind of exposed feeling, like I'm under a microscope. So, by trying to savor and enjoy my meal I enjoy it so much less than when I'm unconsciously stuffing food in my face. Can anyone else relate, or is it just me? Guest guest
I can totally relate; overfocussing on what I'm eating is weird. I find I'm sort of in and out when I'm eating - at my best. The worst is when I'm completely out and unaware entirely. Guest guest
Well said Sandarah and I find the same thing too Evan, when I totally 'focus' on what I'm eating - a 'weird' experience instead of the yum yum yum one I would imagine it to be. Could be that I'm not as hungry as I think I am - hmmmm. Guest guest
Evan, I wonder if when you're savoring your food, you somehow feel as though you are being "tested"? Perhaps you have in the back of you mind the idea that savoring is supposed to make you eat less, or that if you don't love the taste of the food you are obligated to stop. It becomes an obstacle to what you really want to do: eat without having to examine every little thing. I can understand that. Perhaps it would be helpful if you gave yourself permission to savor without any kind of pressure to stop eating in response to that savoring. Even if the food isn't absolutely wondeful, you don't have to stop eating. Think of it as another way to enjoy your food rather than a rule or system to make you eat less. Sandarah>>yeah...if I'm mindlessly gobbling down my food, I realize, to my chagrin, that I have not been enjoying my food, missed the flavors, and now I'm not hungry any more! So thanks for the posts about savoring -- I will remember to taste my food as I'm eating it. One reason being that I don't know what I've tasted before I'm full and then it's too late! :-) Tai
Guest guest
I like it more when I'm not paying attention. I like to be numb and unconscious when I'm eating. My favorite, of course, is to not pay attention while eating and watching TV. Of course, I know this is not the way to go but it's hard to let go of. Guest guest
What it sounds like to me is that if you're not enjoying it, it's not the " right " food. Calling something " really good food " but that you don't enjoy doesn't make it " good food. " That sounds like the Food Police talking. I so much more enjoy my food when I slow down. And when I slow down, I'm so much more aware of when something really isn't doing it for me.... Guest guest
I don't really enjoy eating without distraction but I do enjoy slowing down my eating. Not having the TV on or talking with someone makes me very uncomfortable and anxious and that's not how IE is supposed to be. But that's just me. I know it works very well for many others. Still I can consciously slow down my eating, put down my fork, really taste the food, etc...and watch tv too. When i do slow down I really notice my hunger level and I can distinguish all of the flavors in the food. It really does taste so much better and takes less food to stop the hunger. I have to think about slowing down though, it doesn't come really natural yet. I admit i often don't think of it until the meal is done and I'm thinking "Dang! I should have slowed it down!" but after 55 years of bolting down my food like a beta wolf being watched by an alpha, I guess that habit will take a bit to unlearn. Do what works best for you Evan and worry about the other parts when you get the easy ones out of the way. Sunny Savoring Is Torture!! Guest guest
I have to assume from your post that you usually do not particularly enjoy what you're eating. Does eating so fast hinder you from recognizing your satisfied signal? I do notice that when I eat something wonderful (that doesn't happen too often), the memory of that delicious food stays around in my head for a whle and I am satisfied. But that doesn't happen too often. I really must learn to cook better. Guest guest
Katcha, I think you've hit the nail on the head. When I am definitely hungry, oh my gosh, how delicious every bite is! When I am not hungry anymore and still eating is when I notice that things aren't so great. I'm probably a better food critic when I'm not hungry, but I have no business eating then, so perhaps it's a gift that when I focus on eating, it's no fun! I'm all for focusing, in that case! That's exactly what I need to know. If it's boring and not all that tasty, THEN WHY AM I EATING IT?
