Guest guest
i just read there are no tests for it, but that symptoms must increase drastically after a flare up of strep.... my son has always been all over the place, and he would get strep infections up to 6 a year with fevers over 105 degrees. he also had scarlet fever when he was a lil over 1, and that was a nightmare with the doctor as well... but when i asked my DAN! dr. about it being a possibility he said he did not have enough of the symptoms to be an issue.. so i was just wondering as i always do... wondering leads me to many great discoveries=] thanks for ur help =] jenifer Re: Re: Autism & PANDAS This is how you know: Anti Neuronal antibodies related to strep attacking the basal ganglia You can test for PANDAS. Guest guest
(6) Significant elevation of GABS antibody titers (i.e., ASO titer, AntiDNase B titer) is common, but not necessarily present in every case. Negative GABS titers do not absolutely exclude the diagnosis of PANDAS.http://www.webpediatrics.com/pandas.htmlNo, there isn't much in the way of absolute testing, it's not often there is in autism or other disorders that aren't widely accepted by mainstream medicine. But this is generally the first line of testing. I don't have a PANDAS kid so I can't really comment on any other testing beyond this. Testing is available and just like most things in autism - it also tends to be a bit of a battle over who has the right information and who to believe. But most DANs will pull these titers as the first line of testing for PANDAS. You just have to make sure you do it with enough time *after* having an actual bout of strep. I think they usually want to wait at least 2 months after a strep infection. My son rarely had strep so when we tested, it wasn't an issue so I don't remember how long it was supposed to be.Cheryl ~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~~@Gryffins_Tail~ i just read there are no tests for it, but that symptoms must increase drastically after a flare up of strep.... my son has always been all over the place, and he would get strep infections up to 6 a year with fevers over 105 degrees. he also had scarlet fever when he was a lil over 1, and that was a nightmare with the doctor as well... but when i asked my DAN! dr. about it being a possibility he said he did not have enough of the symptoms to be an issue.. so i was just wondering as i always do... wondering leads me to many great discoveries=] thanks for ur help =] jenifer Re: Re: Autism & PANDAS This is how you know: Anti Neuronal antibodies related to strep attacking the basal ganglia You can test for PANDAS. Guest guest
I think PANDAS children can act normal for periods of time, esp after antibiotics. So for instance, if your child had a bunch of autistic symptoms flare up which included also OCD and tics, irrational fears, and then after antibiotics, your child seemed to get better for a period of time, that would make me think of PANDAS. With or without the titers being elevated. I thought my children were PANDAS for a bit, but they tested negative. Now I feel like they are viral kids... and the reason they were getting better after antibiotics was merely (I guess) that there is some underlying inflammation which was being alleviated when they were sick because I was also giving motrin with the antibiotics.  i just read there are no tests for it, but that symptoms must increase drastically after a flare up of strep.... my son has always been all over the place, and he would get strep infections up to 6 a year with fevers over 105 degrees. he also had scarlet fever when he was a lil over 1, and that was a nightmare with the doctor as well... but when i asked my DAN! dr. about it being a possibility he said he did not have enough of the symptoms to be an issue.. so i was just wondering as i always do... wondering leads me to many great discoveries=] thanks for ur help =] jenifer Re: Re: Autism & PANDAS  This is how you know:  Anti Neuronal antibodies related to strep attacking the basal ganglia You can test for PANDAS.  And honestly, it *seems* like it might describe every kid with autism but it actually doesn't.  My son never had OCD, tics, movement disorders, or irrational fears (nothing beyond typical for his age).  And the only time he's ever lost skills is when he got vaccinated. My son is not a PANDAS kid, if you couldn't tell.  Cheryl ~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~ ~@Gryffins_Tail~  that basically just described every kid i know with autism... how do u distinguish between it being pandas or the other? jenifer =] -- Toni------Mind like a steel trap...Rusty and illegal in 37 states. Guest guest
I forgot to say something. here it is.Wow. With 6 strep infections a year, I would pull titers - it wouldn't matter to me if he didn't show enough symptoms. It's not an expensive test and it's covered by insurance. You can get it through your local lab. I'm surprised your DAN dismissed it based on a lack of symptoms. Especially if he's all over the place. That's kind of crazy to me to not test something like this when it's so cheap to do. Guest guest
OCD, irrational fears and tantrums. OCD: my son would do the same thing from morning to night if allowed. Tantrums: when my son refused to leave the house, even at 4 years old we could not fight him as he became superhuman. Irrational fears: my son used to be afraid of water and refuse to bathe. He is also afraid of animals. Although most ASD kids can perseverate on things, I would not necessarily call it OCD. OCD cannot be voluntarily stopped.
