Nat, it is so hard to get rid of books.  I often take them and donate them to the library.  My library has a book sale every few months to raise some money and those buying get a good deal.  Goodwill is another place I donate things.  I can see where it will be hard with the recipes in them.  Do you have some real favorites you could copy down? Trying to sell them is another option at a garage sale? I gave one of them to a friend.  Welcome glad to have you here. Sandy

O.k., this is my first day at Intuitive eating. I eat when hungry and stopped when full. I ate moderate amounts of all kinds of things including croissant, burger, chips, carrots, blueberries and cheese. I made a great potato salad with new potatoes and red onions. I don't feel stuff and I don't feel hungry.

I am quite happy with myself, but terrified of the scale. Now, in the book I have, Intuitive eating by Tribole, the principle number 1 says to get rid of the diet mentality. So, I am certainly ready and willing to do so, but I have all THOSE books, diet books, in my closet, and I really don't want to get rid of them, most of them are recipe books too and it is just so heartbreaking to me to get rid of them. Maybe I should try to sell them?

How did you handle that one?

Maybe I could get rid of one a week?

Donate them? Burn them? I had no trouble to rid the house of the alcohol when I stopped drinking, now, how can't I just throw those books?

Any hints?

I only officially ever went on one diet--WW. And I wasn't going to do that again, so I didn't actually have much to get rid of. In fact, it occurs to me now that I have some things to get rid of.I did keep most of my recipe books, but now I don't do them diety. If the recipe called for fat free mayo, I use the full-fat stuff I have in the house. The full fat stuff tastes better and keeps me full longer! Maybe NOT following the recipes directly would help. As for the rest of it, if you're really not ready to get rid of it yet, what about boxing it up and throwing it in a basement or closet? When you feel ready, toss it without even opening it (donate it to charity).

Hello Sandy,Thanks for your input. I think I will have to sell them, I can't just get rid of them. I feel ashamed at all the money I spend on diet books. Now, I need to take baby steps at this. I just can't do it now. I will maybe put them in a box and put them very far away in the attic? With the scale? While I figure out how to sell things on Ebay...NatTo:

Nat, those sounds like good ideas. Or you could do 1-2 at a time.  And maybe you are right, it's just not the right time now.  Sandy

My favorite way of getting rid of books is taking them to a good used book store

for credit. (They give credit for half the purchase price, which is WAY more

than I could get any other way. At garage sales, books go for 25-50 cents each.

I would never get around to putting anything on eBay. When you ask the used

book store here to buy your books, they select far fewer of them and pay

one-fourth of the purchase price.) I then use that credit to buy other good

books. Here's an idea - maybe you could find a couple of books on intuitive

eating? Or maybe something purely for recreation, which would reward you for

giving up that diet mentality and those back-up plans " just in case " IE doesn't

work out?

Like I never really 'officially' dieted by following any set plans or

joining any organization/membership etc. But even though I never considered

myself a 'dieter' I came to find out that I had been affected by diet mentality.

So even though I didn't have books, plans, food cards etc. to unload, dumping

the 'stuff' that was residing in my mind turned out to be my real challenge. It

was easy for me to be angry for allowing myself to be duped by 'experts' and all

the media sludge that bombards us all each and every day. But unhooking from the

'you have failed' messages that is plastered allllll over a heavier than

'normal' body took me time and lots of self reinforcing. It was SO worth it.

I got some IE type books from a 'free' online book swap site -

Boy, I could have written this :) Today is day 3 for me, and I finally put all my diet books into a BIG box. It stunned me because I realized that I own literally every diet book ever written (no, I'm not kidding!). Tomorrow I'll take them to a local used book store. I almost feel like I should just burn them so others don't fall into the same dangerous diet trap that I fell into for 20 years.

Katcha, I found myself again looking at the diet books at the Goodwill, even buying another silly one and realizing soon thereafter I would never follow it. Yes, I'll probably give it back to them. I used to buy a lot of magazines (especially the ones that said how I could lose 10 pounds in a week with the magic diet), but now I pass them up, knowing after many years of yearning and looking at those mags that I will never follow them). I do still envy the "after" pictures of those who have lost so much weight, etc., but I am learning to love my body and myself lately. Taken me time, but I'm getting there, knowing where I'm at. I'm so glad to be reading the posts from all of you, TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Monday, August 1, 2011 11:15 PMSubject: Re: principle number 1 - get rid of the diet mentality and the diet books.

I got some IE type books from a 'free' online book swap site - PaperbackSwap.com. You don't receive $$, but you can get books you want for free. Just another option.

Over the years I've tried several diets, including WW. I did OA for a while and yes, when I followed a 'diet,' I lost weight. I looked and felt good. But then I went 'off' the diet, something snapped or I got tired of restraining myself all the time, and gained all the weight back, etc., now I appreciate the IE mentality because it's the only way for me to go -- right now. Like I never really 'officially' dieted by following any set plans or joining any organization/membership etc. But even though I never considered myself a 'dieter' I came to find out that I had been affected by diet mentality. So even though I didn't have books, plans, food cards etc. to unload, dumping the 'stuff' that was residing in my mind turned out to be my real challenge. It was easy for me to be angry for allowing myself to be duped by 'experts' and all the media sludge that bombards us all each and every day. But unhooking from the 'you have failed' messages that is plastered allllll over a heavier than 'normal' body took me time and lots of self reinforcing. It was SO worth it.

By the way, most diet books don't sell well on ebay, I've tried that. But now they have the first 50 items free each month, so it doesn't cost to list them, and if you want to make a dollar or two, go for it. I bought my books real cheap most of the time at Goodwill's, and so didn't spend a lot of money on most "diet" books. Occasionally I would buy a diet book at a bookstore, but have not done that for years. The last book I bought at full price was something I never even read. :-) I am not sure I have it any more, but any diet books are staring at me from my bookcase. I recently got rid of literally hundreds of diet books, virtually all of them I bought (many were brand new) at Goodwill for less than $2 each. I either gave them back to Goodwill or offered them on a local freecycle board.

My favorite way of getting rid of books is taking them to a good used book store for credit. (They give credit for half the purchase price, which is WAY more than I could get any other way. At garage sales, books go for 25-50 cents each. I would never get around to putting anything on eBay. When you ask the used book store here to buy your books, they select far fewer of them and pay one-fourth of the purchase price.) I then use that credit to buy other good books. Here's an idea - maybe you could find a couple of books on intuitive eating? Or maybe something purely for recreation, which would reward you for giving up that diet mentality and those back-up plans "just in case" IE doesn't work out?
