Guest guest
It took me YEARS to get rid of the literally hundreds of diet books I had. But finally I did. I never even looked at most of them but somehow the covers comforted me as if I could do this. Maybe this time it will be easier. Magic? maybe. NOTHING WORKED. Many of them go through the physiology of the body, sometimes with charts, etc., as if that was going to help me, LOL. Big deal, I thought, it's nice to know that person's program, but harder to obey, every diet I tried I lost weight but eventually stopped dieting, so what good is that? Who wants to go to meetings and keep hearing how to do it? Not me. It took me time to get rid of all the diet books, I still have some but took the time to go through them and tear out the recipes I wanted, nothing more ... I figured the books were mine anyway, I bought them, so I could rip the pages out that I wanted. It took time to go through the books but it was worth it, although now I'm thinking about the folder of recipes I have and wondering if I'll ever make any of them, LOL! The ones I didn't rip the pages out of, I gave away. Nat, it is so hard to get rid of books. I often take them and donate them to the library. My library has a book sale every few months to raise some money and those buying get a good deal. Goodwill is another place I donate things. I can see where it will be hard with the recipes in them. Do you have some real favorites you could copy down? Trying to sell them is another option at a garage sale? I gave one of them to a friend. Welcome glad to have you here. Sandy O.k., this is my first day at Intuitive eating. I eat when hungry and stopped when full. I ate moderate amounts of all kinds of things including croissant, burger, chips, carrots, blueberries and cheese. I made a great potato salad with new potatoes and red onions. I don't feel stuff and I don't feel hungry. I am quite happy with myself, but terrified of the scale. Now, in the book I have, Intuitive eating by Tribole, the principle number 1 says to get rid of the diet mentality. So, I am certainly ready and willing to do so, but I have all THOSE books, diet books, in my closet, and I really don't want to get rid of them, most of them are recipe books too and it is just so heartbreaking to me to get rid of them. Maybe I should try to sell them? How did you handle that one? Maybe I could get rid of one a week? Donate them? Burn them? Guest guest
Nat, I no longer weigh myself. I know I'm gaining weight because of the way my clothes fit, but weighing myself will only add to my anxiety so I don't do it. I got rid of the scale. It's not my friend and never was. Meantime, like you, I'm working on IE. Best to you and I look forward to hearing more from you. Guest guest
Good for you, taking them to used book store. Sandy  Boy, I could have written this  Today is day 3 for me, and I finally put all my diet books into a BIG box. It stunned me because I realized that I own literally every diet book ever written (no, I'm not kidding!). Tomorrow I'll take them to a local used book store. I almost feel like I should just burn them so others don't fall into the same dangerous diet trap that I fell into for 20 years. Guest guest
Other members have said the same thing too! But we all need to make decisions that suit ourselves at the time we make them. I can so agree that recovering some $$s is as good an idea as trashing would be for anyone who would delight in that too. :-) :-) Katcha IEing since March 2007 I almost feel like I should just burn them so others don't fall into the same dangerous diet trap that I fell into for 20 years. Guest guest
I had to chuckle when I read all these posts regarding getting rid of diet books. I actually did burn mine in a huge bonfire, along with beating the crap out of my scale with a hammer. I took stickers and wrote all the things I had let the scale say to me for so many years, stuck them all over the scale... And beat it to pieces. It felt really good! Oh, and I ate really good s'mores that I made from the bonfire! :-) I am quite happy with myself, but terrified of the scale. I took stickers and wrote all the things I had let the scale say to me for so many years, stuck them all over the scale... And beat it to pieces. It felt really good! > > Oh, and I ate really good s'mores that I made from the bonfire! :-) > > > I am quite happy with myself, but terrified of the scale. Burn them? Guest guest
Never thought about a bonfire. The scale got thrown into the pool by my hubby who grew very tired of my mood being dependant on the number I saw on the scale To: "IntuitiveEating Support" <IntuitiveEating_Support >Sent: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 6:00:34 PMSubject: Re: principle number 1 - get rid of the diet mentality and the diet books. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the support. For me it came down to the fact that if I kept either the books or the scale, I still had access to it. At this point, if I want something to do with dieting, I would have to physically go spend money on it, and I'm not doing that anymore. Amy, Fantastic! I never thought of all that but it sure would settle a lot of things. Make it definite, final, diets begone forever and ever. Thanks for sharing. It was great and even made ME feel better. Sandy I had to chuckle when I read all these posts regarding getting rid of diet books. I actually did burn mine in a huge bonfire, along with beating the crap out of my scale with a hammer.
