Guest guest
Hi Casey, You just exactly stated how my osteoarthritis started 4 years ago. It didn't even show up on an x-ray at this stage. I was forever trying to figure out how to stretch out the muscles and which shoes to wear that didn't cause me pain. Each year got progressively worse until this past year I could not walk without a cane and was in horrible pain 24 hours a day. My advice, but I'll bet you aren't ready for it yet. Is to get resurfaced NOW while you are strong and still can walk, muscles haven't atrophied yet, and you will bounce back like a little red rubber ball. If I were you, I'd go for the most experienced surgeon I could find. I would be booking my reservations with the master- surgeon Dr. De Smet. I wish the best of luck to you and hope you don't suffer as long as I did. Lynda > All surface hippies! > > I suffer from a severely deformed hip prone to inflammation but not > from OA or ON. Guest guest
Casey: I'm no doctor either - but this sure sounds a lot like my early arthritis (which they said was moderate and shouldn't hurt - ha). It hurt and it got worse very quickly, especially, I believe, after I started taking the stronger NSAIDS. Anyway, it doesn't matter what made it worse at this point - but it deteriorated to the point of my not being able to walk without crutches and being unable to sleep without pain so bad it made me cry sometimes in the space of under 3 years. I was able to control it at first with specific strengthening and stretching, but control is the best I could do - it doesn't get better. All of that pain was completely gone when I woke up from surgery in Belgium and 8 weeks post op it is all a distant memory. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner - there was no need for that kind of pain. My husband's pain was similar too, except that he only hurt if he actually did something. If he did nothing he had no pain, but what kind of life is that. If my right hip starts with that kind of pain there will be no waiting - I will immediately book in with Dr. De Smet and plan which chocolate store I will hit first (unfortunately I am not a beer drinker - but that way there's more for the rest of you). Guest guest
Hi Casey, Let me start off by saying; I am not a physician, but I, like everyone else here, posess some real first hand experience with hip pain. In my case, I have severe AVN. Though the pain originated from a hip problem, the pain did not manifest in the hip at first. It started in the knee an ankle. It wasn't until very late stages that It became a problem evident in the hip itself. I received the most short term relief from a deep theraputic massage. One specifically working on the tendons etc. This actually decreased the pain and increased my ROM more than medications. Exercise and stretching are out of the question... physically impossible. If I'm just sitting around, it feels like a couple of Mafia Goons have been working over my leg with a 3# hand sledge hammer. I assume this is from extreme muscle and tendon fatigue caused by constant muscle tension. If I stand up or sit down or walk etc, that's when I get the sharp shooting pains, but a lot more in the knee and ankle until just recently. If I twist wrong or move a little too fast; that's when it gets to be " knee buckling - drop you to the ground " fun. If I keep on this line of thought I'll have to start my own site called " Chronic Whiners " . The point is, my advice would be to initiate proceedings to take care of it now. I have an associate and friend who had the same type of thing and he said that when he woke up after the surgery, the pain was gone.. finis... end of story! I have waited too long, hoping it might get better because I had good days and bad days. Ha! In my case the progression was pretty rapid. From blissfully unaware last Feb. to virtually unable to get around. And the worst part is that If I had had the resurf done in Aug. like my surgeon suggested, I'd be walking around a free man today. Now my surgery isn't for one more month and it is questionable if a resurf is still possible. And if I get a hemi and get ostracized from this site, the THR people won't want me either, because I don't have a cup implant. I'll be an outcast... a lost child.. I'll have to start my own site and call it " The Femur Reamers " . Do it. Get the resurf, while you still can. It won't hurt (at least not any more than it does now). (Possible early stages of arthritis) I have been trying to pinpoint exactly where I hurt the most in my hip joint. My point is that there are different sources of different types of pain coming from the hip. I believe that the pubofemoral ligament (going from the pubic bone to the femur)is a major sore spot for me when I lift my bad leg forward to take a step. (Only when I've walked too much or if I make the mistake of wearing heavy shoes) Then, when I put my weight down on my bad hip I get what I perceive to be bone pain (bone pain?? :-) Anyone could tell I'm no doctor!!) I wonder if this ligament pain is likely to go away when I get resurfaced? Any comments are welcome. Casey
