Hi ,

Most newcomers say just what you have. Please don't worry.

Your child will be able to have delicous squash chips, chicken nuggets even

pizza but it must be home made using foods specified on SCD.

If you have tried GFCF you already have some experience with a special diet, but

SCD differs. Starting SCD means going on a limited intro diet for two days but

after that you can gradually add a number of foods and deal with the dairy issue

much later. Dairy is optional only, not mandatory.

We usually suggest a one month trial of SCD will give a good indication of

suitability. We will all help you.

Liz,

The pecanbread.com website will tell you what foods to start with. Go to

" Food Preparation " I believe and scroll down.

Also, just curious - who is your DAN! doc?

Hi All-

My name is Liz Fiordalisi and I have a 4 (5 in April) year old son

with ASD and colitis. We are in the midst of a major

flare-up (I think bacteria) with alot of diarrhea and pain. He has

been on Neomycin, Flagyll and Diflucan for a while now with little to

no improvment. So, today our DAN! doctor told me to put him on the

SCD diet. We tried the SCD diet last year for a little over 3 months

without any changes. However, we dove right in with all the nut

flours and foods rather than taking it slow. We were forced to give

it up because my son was eating a ton of meat and we came to find out

that his cholesterol was over 500. Anyway, we have since learned

that he was majorily growth hormone deficient (from birth) and that

growth hormone regulates cholesterol. He has been on growth hormone

supplementation since May of last year and his cholesterol is

perfect. So, we will begin the SCD this weekend and not look back.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start out (properly)? I

have the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle- but I am still confused as

to what foods to start with. Thanks,

Liz

Here are some links for getting started on the diet

http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#transition

http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#intro

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/beginners.htm

http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#menu

http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#homemade

Elaine recommends no longer than 5 days on the intro diet. You can

do the intro 4-5 days if severe diarrhea or 2-3 days otherwise.

When you start to reintroduce foods after the intro start with

cooked, peeled fruit and vegetables and gradually work up to more

complex foods. After the cooked foods you can eventually try peeled

raw fruit and veggies, then raw veggies and fruit and eventually

dried fruit and vegs, but this will take some time (dependant on his

rate of healing).

After the intro you can try some homemade applesauce or homemade

pearsauce or ripe banananas, and in veggies some green beans or

squash seem to be tolerated early on by many. If you still aren't

sure what to add after these write back in and we'll try to help.

I think that your son sounds like a great candidate for SCD.

" Hard to implement " is a relative term. Watching my children

suffer was the hardest thing in the world to do. Anything that

eliminated their suffering was far easier than watching them be

sick.

So, I won't lie and say it's easy, but I will say that it's definitely

worth the effort.

Read the info on pecanbread.com to get started and you can

order Elaine's book or look for it at your local library.

The soft runny stools sound just like my sons. He is on the diet a

long time now and is doing great. He has 1-2 formed bm's a day

now. Before there could be 5-8 smelly, mushy ones , sometimes

diarrhea that usually leaked out his diaper.

Peeling and cooking all fruits and veggies at the beginning gave his

gut a break and allowed it to heal. I had to avoid raw and dried

fruit and vegetables for a while but now is okay with them as long

as he doesn't overdo it. Here are some links to get started:

My dr has told me that I would be high risk for miscarriages because

Hi Rhonda!

Where are you guys stationed? Have you had any problems dealing

with Tricare? We are currently overseas, but have orders to go to

Fort Leonard Wood this summer. It will be my first experience

dealing with Tricare, just not sure what they cover when it comes to

infertility treatments - do you know anything about it?

Good luck to you...
