, not sure I know what you mean by a long term list.  Do you mean people who have been doing it for a long time?  Sandy

there used to be another Yahoo Group called IE Long Haul which was just

for people who had been practicing IE for some time (over 6 months) and

definitely were over the 'newbie' stage. The posts got less and less as members

became more confident with their IE and the group ended up being shut down due

to lack of activity. It is probably still a valid support and I've toyed with

re-starting another group is there were enough interested in that.

Katcha, obviously I'm not an expert at IE. However, I would be interested in such a group. TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 9:25 PMSubject:

Hi, . I love everybody's replies and I sometimes have more time than others, but I know what you mean about not keeping up with everybody's posts. My eyelids are beginning to get heavy now, I suppose it's time for me to hit the hay. TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 12:53 PMSubject: Re: Long-Term IE list

Oh Katcha, thank you for that encouragement, that those who have gone before

became more and more confident and eventually didn't need this sort of support.

Right now, I'm still coming here asap when I get on my computer each morning and

any other time of day I check my email, I also check for current posts.

You know, I've always found having separate groups for newbies and long timers takes away from the help newbies desperately need. I know long timers get tired of repeating the same things over and over but if they have their own long term group they tend to stay there and not share with newbies. I'd join a long term list so as not to be left out but hate to see long terms leave the newbie list. I've seen this over and over with many other groups and the "newbie" groups get left with one or two "experts" and instead of learning from vast experience, they only get the ideas and beliefs of a few.

I'd be very interested to see longtimers messages to see struggles they are facing. But to be honest, I'm thoroughly enjoying this group and I guess I don't need more time taken up on the message boards right now. :-) Have a good day, all! And I'm working on eating enough to feel satisfied and not bogged down. Tai

Sunny, that is a astute and valid point. It did come into play in creating a

second group (before). There were some of the long term members who did

participate in both groups, but you hit the nail right on the head - newbie

questions - valid and necessary as they are! - do get stale and can be a

chaffing reminder to those who have gotten past a newbie phase. However long

term IEers did find a different level of support by having their own group too.

In a way I feel that there are about 3 stages to an IE journey - newbie, junior

and senior. Each has its own needs and support, but all can still learn from

each other - patience and understanding allowed.

ehugs, Katcha

IEing since March 2007

(and that doesn't necessarily make me a 'senior' IEer either ;-) lol)

So Katcha, what do you see those 3 levels as consisting of? I guess I'm curious

about the learning curve of IE. Seems like I'm not seeing a lot of posts on

this list from folks who have attained all that much long-term success (which I

suppose I define as both making peace with food and reaching and maintaining a

healthy weight). I figure that's natural, as those who do would focus their

time and attention elsewhere. But you've been around awhile, so what have you

seen as you've watched people learn IE?

Hi. It appears that most of us are still working on the recognition of hunger and fullness signals, and for me I have two big things to work on: eating out with friends or by myself (I love to eat out), and helping myself to stop. Since I see this is a heavy mental process for me, I know I need help from others for me to apply this new way of thinking and approaching food intake experiences. TaiTo:

Jane,

I can help answer this I believe. I have been doing IE I think as long as

Katcha has because I think we started together (Katcha, weren't we in the Am I

Hungry? teleclass together?). This is strictly from my point of view and

opinion. Katcha or other long-term IEr's might have different view points.

The first phase is probably when you are first getting into IE, probably have

read the IE book and are working through the steps and are trying to learn to

reconnect with your body, it's hunger and satisfaction levels, using the hunger

scale and also re-incorporating all those forbidden foods from our diet days.

Learning what foods we really do and don't like.

I think the middle stage that Katcha talks about is where you have gotten the

steps under your belt but you are just riding the waves of IE. We talk of IE as

being like a dance where you take two steps forward and two steps backward, but

the steps backwards are getting further and further apart and they don't last as

long. For me, this was my periods where I would fall into the trap of mindless

eating, usually when stressed or tired and I would eat way too much of not very

healthy things like chips, chocolate and ice cream. I think at this stage is

when I finally accepted my body where it was at. I had gained probably 20 lbs.

in the first stage and I felt incredibly uncomfortable and anxious in my

clothes. As soon as I went out and bought some clothes that fit me at that

point in time did I relax and really fall into IE and the 3rd stage. This was

also the stage where I decided to throw out my scale. It sat in my bathroom

unused for probably a year. But everytime I stepped on it, I realized the

number was never what I wanted it to be and how it set my mood and how I felt

about myself. It was very freeing to get rid of it and now I can be weighed

only at the doctor's office and the number doesn't bother me. I know it's now a

reflection of who I am as a person.

The 3rd stage is where IE is a way of life. You are probably choosing to eat

heathier foods because they make you feel good. You are able to recognize when

you are hungry and when you are satisfied. You probably exercise intuitivly

because you like how it makes your body feel. Very rarely do you fall into the

non-IE trap. For me, occassionally I still will fall into mindless eating, but I

am very aware of what I am doing, I have given myself premission to do so. By

doing so, it is extremely rare - only once or twice a year-and it lasts for a

very short period of time because I realize this doesn't help my emotional state

and I know what I need to do to take care of myself. This is the stage where I

think weight loss will begin if you really truly are living the IE life. Or,

you might be perfectly ok if you don't lose weight. You 100% love and accept

yourelf right where you are.

I hope this helps.

Alana, thanks for your answer -- informative. How long were you in the first phase (learning what foods you really liked and didn't like?) TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Friday, August 19, 2011 12:03 PMSubject: Re: Long-Term IE list
