I plan to see it but I am not sure how soon. Sometimes I am just frugal enough

to wait for it on DVD:).

I'm worse than you; I wait for our town library to order it!

I have heard some interesting things about the Portman character. Would

love to get a review if anyone sees it. (I might spring for the $5 weekday

escape and take nada!!! ha ha ha) I'm serious... Oh, the irony of taking her

and her not realizing what I'm thinking. Will she say the character reminds her

of me? :-)

I broached the subject of BPD with her last month with the opening that I may

have found an explanation for some of MY behavior traits. (I was still

wondering if it was me.) She said, " Oh, yeah, a borderline personality disorder

makes sense. It's not like you have a fullblown one. I'm glad to see you're

looking into this. "

  • 1 month later...

I just forked over the money :) and saw this movie tonight. My head is kind of

swimming but I thought for sure the mom was borderline but I wasn't sure about

Portman's character. Anyone else see it? Any thoughts?

I could totally see it about the mother, but the main character, I'm sad to say,

is that most popular but inaccurate and therefore deadly of characters: a

Hollywoodism.

She's obviously mentally ill, but her mental illness doesn't make any sense.

Clearly, the producers thought: " Ooooooh, we have all these cool special

effects now! We could turn her legs into swan legs! We could make her grow

feathers! That's never been done before! And with Portman in that role

we could make loads of money! It'll look coooooool!!! "

And it does. And she's a wonderful actress, and I'm sure she'll get her

this time. But her mental illness doesn't make any sense.

People see this, they enjoy the movie, they scratch their heads, and the next

time they confront or hear about a real mentally ill person, they just can't

make heads or tails...just like our flying monkeys. They make excuses, or reach

for the ol' Moral Diagnosis, or they just shrug their shoulders. The mental

illness here is just for shock value and the images on the screen, and therefore

real mental illness still Does Not Compute for anyone who saw that.

Again.

I hated this movie's depiction of a dancer (and as of a mentally ill person). As

a former professional dancer myself, I can say that no matter how talented the

individual, if they behaved with so little self-confidence and personal

weakness, they would NEVER make it to soloist, far be it PRINCIPAL, at a major

international company. Dancers are very independent, strong, and confident. Some

definitely are egotistical, but this character was just so weak and neurotic,

even the neurosis didn't fit with the way I've experienced other neurotic

dancers.

Also, I don't know about BPD, but the no dancer of that stature has a stage

mother that deeply embedded in their life.

I enjoyed the movie but I felt it was based on false premises. It was just

unrealistic and that unrealism gives people the wrong idea about a lot of

things: dancers, stage moms, BPD, mental illness, personality disorders, etc.

Hollywood makes me so angry sometimes.

On the other hand, I do love Portman.

I was disappointed in the movie. The character that interested me most was

the mother (who incidentally had facial features a bit like my own BPD

momster). But they didn't develop the mother's character to my satisfaction.

And then at the end, I just thought the movie turned kind of stupid. I was

ready to leave 20 min before it ended. And Jackie from that 70s show didn't

much help matters.

What I did like though was the Art Direction and costuming. I can't help it.

the story line is always second to the costumes and photography for me. Can

you tell I'm not really a movie buff? I just watch to see how they create

the characters visually. i'm a nerd. :)

I liked the movie but found myself confused by the mental illness displayed. I

thought the mother was borderline (maybe Witch or Queen BP?) but that her

daughter was definitely the all-good child, because, sad to say, she showed

Portman's character way more support and love than I've ever seen from

my mother! LOL!
