Guest guest
Steph, I have had the surgery recently with Dr. Oro, only two weeks ago! I want to say that I am much better for doing it. They are so great there, and my surgery was a great success by Drs. Oro and Mueller. They have a great facility and team. If you have had headaches all the time for years, it will probably help. I was a bit skeptical back and forth trying to decide on having the decompression surgery or try life without it because of the risks. But, I did it after a few years of procrastinating and now am so glad. However, you need to take into account that I am very new to the zipperhead gang, and so, I have not been recovered long enough to know all the ups and downs yet. But, this is what I do know. My balance was an issue for me and I got that back too. The recovery is tough, but it should help if ACM is truly the problem you are having that is causing the symptoms. I have very long, great thick brown hair too. They put it in two braids and only shaved down the middle of the back about two inches wide, so that it does cover up the scar now that it is healing. I do not know how Dr. Meneze does it. I have not even had to cut any. I was in the hospital 4 days. The first and second in ICU, then down to the regular floor, another day and then discharged. I went to the nearby hotel that was arranged for me by church members to get to stay near my dr. in Missouri. I live in Ala. I got to stay there 5 more days and that made me feel very confident to go home without any complications and partially healed. I flew there on Angelflight. But, decided to drive home in two legs, 4 hour drives at a time, staying over in KY. I was able to take a shower and wash my hair on the 10th day after the staples were taken out. I took baths for the lower half for the time before that. I am a mother of two girls, but married. You will need some help for about 4 weeks. I am doing so well, I am doing too much. So, get someone to help you not do that. You would even like them to live with you if you can swing it. The hardest part is not picking up the stuff that you have to carry around with you for the visit to and from the hospital. You will need someone to carry things for you. Do not pick stuff up. I am a bit sore, because I came home yesterday, and am trying to unpack on my own. I got so sore, I had to take the medication for pain again today, and was not taking it any longer for about 3 days, except Advil. And, it makes me a bit sleepy and slower, so I am forced to lay down. Much better than leather restraints. he he I learned my lesson and began to lay back down this afternoon. I know everyone tells you this. But, I feel so much better, I am just excited to get to walk around and see things in my own home without squinting and hitting the floor a couple times a day. If you are prescribed a stool softener, do take it even after you get home. I stopped it and that is a problem if the stool is a strain on you. The only other meds. I am taking regular is the muscle relaxant they prescribed me, and that is flexeril. Also, I resumed my other med. Klonopin that was the only one I was on before the surgery. I do take a lot of vitamins and minerals, herbs too. And, that helps I know. I am taking a lot to boost my immunity. There are about 10 of those. But, I did have to be off all supplements, and herbs two weeks before the surgery. You cannot take them for that time, or they will cause problems with your bleeding I was told. You do not want to strain, by yelling, singing blowing up balloons, etc. stuff like that, until after about 6 weeks. You won't want to anyway. But, you must breath deep often and cough (one or two) and turn while lying down to prevent pneumonia. Also, it is good to keep doing the little breathing exercises at home too, until you get up and about. I was very scared too the weeks before the surgery. So, I do not pretend to ease you too much on this, but I will say it was not as bad as I thought. I have had spinal fusion and a C-section and also kidney stones and surgery with that. This surgery for the decompression was not as bad as those for me. But, it has its pro's and con's as well. I am having trouble getting the pain under control at times. That is of the skull only, and the bones and stuff in the neck. But, I do NOT have a headache. Yeah!!! The other surgeries took me even many more weeks to not feel too much pain. So, again, I am rushing. I am having some trouble with my memory of events weeks before the surgery in which I am repeating a lot of stuff to people that I talked to then and in the hospital as well. They are telling me I already told them that. So, there is a memory issue. But, I can say that I have a much less foggy head now. And, there may be a breach in that time of memory for me I guess. But, I know I am sharp now. One of the worst things is trying to get comfortable while lying down. You need to get a good pillow before you go and bring it. I wish I had known that, or remembered it discussed here at wacma. If you wallow all over your head the first day while you are on the pain pump you will not know it, because you are out of it. And, it will cause you to be much more sore. I did this, and did not realize it. So, I am praying for you, and I hope you do well. Write any time for any other need. I will answer when I can. I am posting this to you and the group, because it is good advise I feel for others pending surgery, Getting well slowly, in Ala. Guest guest
Hi Karin, thanks for you note! It's so nice to meet you and everyone! Everyone already has been a huge support to me, and they don't even realize it yet! To make a long story short, I knew had ASD when he was 17 months old. Everyone thought I was crazy, and basically just told me to shut the hell up and eat some more lithium. Finally, they all one by one noticed. The only thing I can say about being a special ed teacher? All those years of teaching never prepared me to be a mother of a special needs child. It's totally different. The only thing good about it is I've had 2 years of behavioral training in college, and I don't put up with any bullshit from . He's a really good kid. We're pretty scrict on him (we expect alot), and you know? he gives us all he's got. he's made so much progress, and i know it's because of all the early intervention. but like i was saying, he gives us 100% and that's all i expect from any child. i use alot of slang, can't write worth a crap, so you all please forgive all the grammatical errors. oh, and thanks for letting me talk. Guest guest
Hi Christy, Did your Doctor explain the cause of your daughter's condition? Is she a Type I? Is she hypoglycemic (to little blood sugar)? Was it diet related? Of course the thing with young children is to get them to eat things that they don't particularly like... I'm sure you'll become a master of disguise and adept in hiding foods within foods good luck > Hello everyone, > My name is Christy. > We almost lost our 6 yr old daughter to ketoacidosis this week. Guest guest
Welcome! I would suggest two books: DIABETES FOR DUMMIES and DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION. There is a book called THE DIABETIC CHILD, but I don't know anything about it so cannot recommend or discommend it. hello Hello everyone, My name is Christy.
