An IE doctors office success

I wanted to share some success with everyone regarding a doctors office, to let everyone know that "Yes, Virginia there are some understanding doctors." I've had knee problems my entire life. For as far back as I can remember, I've had pain so bad in my knees sometimes that I've been unable to walk. No doctor ever correctly diagnosed it for me. Most blamed it on my weight, even after I told then the pain occurred even after I dropped 100lbs. Recently in my IE journey, I decided that even though I am still heavy (I gained that 100lbs+ back) that I was going to take up running again. I ran/walked a half marathon on my birthday and was recently training to do a full marathon. On a training run one night, my knee locked up, I fell, and landed on my knee. I was seen at the ER, put on crutches, and told to see an orthopedic surgeon. I hate most doctor offices. I'm just not fans of hypocrites for the most part, who took at the most two semesters of nutrition and proclaim themselves all knowing. (I'll step off my soapbox now) I researched all the options open to me that my insurance would cover and decided on a doctor in the next state over. I chose to see a sport orthopedist and scheduled an appointment. I got to the office this morning and the PA came in. We chatted for a few minutes and I got the white elephant out of the room by saying, "Look, I know I am overweight. I am also active, and carry my weight well. I understand that losing weight would reduce the strain on my joints, and I have lost 25lbs. However, I find it hard to believe that weight caused all this." The doctor was stunned. And he replied, "You are in good health, active, and carry your weight well. Losing weight may help, but it won't solve the problem. This is a poor biomechanics problem that was misdiagnosed for years. This injury is the result of people not listening to you. You did nothing wrong."Then it was my turn to be stunned. He really listen to me, didn't make weight the issue, and offered me multiple solutions. If he was single, I might have proposed right there!

Amy, Fantastic.  Helps regain your faith in humanity doesn't it?  So glad you found someone to listen.  What did they do for you?  When I had my brain surgery(shunt), the PA and the surgeon were fantastic and listened.  After surgery I had this overwhelming craving for chocolate, more than usual. I joked with surgeon and PA that perhaps the surgery had altered something in my brain, like the chocolate center.  We all had a good laugh and he said he couldn't take credit for that. I think it might have been an emotional reaction actually.  Hope you got some help out of it this time.  Sandy

, glad I'm going through my email and read this. I checked the website of footlevelers, and wonder which insert did you get? Also, did the chiropractor take a form of your foot and send it in to them? I know the podiatrist made an insert for my feet and I am happy with them, I usually wear them. He made a plaster of paris form and sent it in to the manufacturing company. I am curious about the knees, though, I have problems with walking up stairs as well. What a relief it would be to actually be able to walk up and down stairs without trouble and wonder if there's a difference in types of inserts for various problems, never thought about it until now. Thanks for mentioning it. Tai To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 8:08 PMSubject: Re: An IE doctors office success

Amy,

I have a similar situation with my knees. I have a very very mild

case of genu valgus that is not diagnosable via naked eye, but a

chiropractor figured it out. I got some amazing inserts from

footlevelers.com (through the chiropractor), and it's changed my

life. Seriously, the first time I walked up stairs without pain I

almost cried. (I don't work for the company, don't worry!!!)

And yes, I too was just told to lose weight and was dismissed.

I was barely walking with my big toes at all because I had this

problem with my bone shape/biomechanics.

Ciao!
