Guest guest
But if an iTunes address was subscribed to the list, and was bouncing back an autoreply, wouldn't that autoreply go in as a post not as a reply email? I don't get emails from any other person in the group when they post--I have my settings on the Daily Digest mode, which means once or twice a day I get an email with up to 25 posts in it. Most are replies to other posts. If iTunes is autoreplying, which is what we are getting, and they are subscribed, the email should appear like a post to the group. That makes me think that the group list itself is somehow infected with a virus. Because an autoreply from a subscribed address should show up like another member's autoreply did over the holidays. Once a day or so there was a post from an autoreply from someone who was away over the holidays.

Guest guest
I have several e-mail accounts, but I only use my " anuria-67854 " account for bpd-related groups. So far, the iTunes spam has only appeared in my " anuria-67854 " e-mail inbox, so, I think its likely that it has something to do with Yahoo! Groups and possibly only this Group. I have an iTunes account, but, I haven't even opened iTunes in like, months. So, I'm at a loss to understand how to stop it. Blocking their address in my e-mail doesn't seem to work at all. -Annie > > >I haven't been getting the automated e-mail responses you > > >describe, but it could be due to two factors: (a) I selected > > >the option of only reading Group posts in the Messages section > > >of our Yahoo! No, it isn't a virus. The responses are not generated by malware nor are they spam. They have absolutely nothing to do with actually using iTunes either. They're genuine automated responses from iTunes that come within seconds of posting here. Something is causing the iTunes to receive our messages as they're posted, causing it to respond just as it would to any other message. The most likely way that could happen is for someone's computer to have sent a message " from " the iTunes support address to this group's subscription address, presumably because it was infected with a malicious, spamming software. The other way it could happen is if someone has set their mail client to automatically redirect all mail from here to the iTunes address. The latter is not likely to happen accidentally and I can't imagine why anyone would do it by choice unless they were angry and wanted to cause problems. >Did I miss it, or is there actual proof it's connected to the >Yahoo group? The proof is that a bunch of us have found that every message posted here generates an auto-reply from iTunes. Guest guest
Yeah, I realized shortly after posting that and receiving my own iTunes spam that it's something with the group. I don't even have iTunes on this computer! It does concern me though. How can you send a message from the iTunes support address unless you are Apple/iTunes? Also, how is it automatically picking out our email addresses to reply to versus replying as a post to the group? I'm so confused. > >I haven't been getting any messages either, > > You haven't posted anything else here today, have you? Thus > there was nothing from you to be responded to by the iTunes > server. Guest guest
I think Katrina tried to explain that in a prior post, let me see if I can find it... Per Katrina: " No, it isn't a virus. It stopped for a bit. After I had replied a couple of times, I did not get an iTunes message. I went to take a nap and when I woke up I had another one waiting for me. Very confusing! I also got a reply from iTunes support... which was less than helpful. They were telling me how to deal with fraudulent charges, even though I stated in the email I did send them that there were NO charges made. So... I have no idea. I think Katrina has the right idea... it's not anyone being hacked, but more likely as she explained that someone's PC has been compromised or someone's causing problems. I think it would be wise for everyone to hold off on posting anything BPD related until this is sorted out for good. No. Programs that respond to e-mail messages can choose to respond to various different addresses in the headers. Normally, e-mail clients respond to the reply-to: address if there is one when doing simple replies because that's why it is included in messages where it is desirable to respond to something other than the original sender's address. (Using " reply-to-all " gives different results than using " reply " , but that's not germaine to this discussion.) The iTunes autoresponder doesn't use the reply-to: header. It uses the from: header because for its purposes, that is the more sensible header to use. Auto-responding to groups instead of to individuals is mostly considered bad netiquette. We should all be very, very glad that this auto-responder is not responding to the group. Doing so what set up a loop which could quickly result in hundreds of messages per hour as each auto-reply was auto-replied to again. (I subscribe to a mailing list that someone did that to once. I think it got up to several hundred messages an hour before the list-owner came home and saw what was going on and put a stop to it.) >I don't get emails from any other person in the group when they >post--I have my settings on the Daily Digest mode, which means >once or twice a day I get an email with up to 25 posts in it. >Most are replies to other posts. That's because people normally respond to the group, not to the original sender. If I chose to respond to your address rather than using the group address, then you'd get an individual message from me. That's simply not appropriate here for the most part though, so people don't normally do it. >If iTunes is autoreplying, which is what we are getting, and >they are subscribed, the email should appear like a post to the >group. That particular auto-reply was set up to respond to the reply-to: address, which is generally bad form if you're subscribed to mailing lists. Not everybody understands such things enough to set them up properly though. -- Katrina
Guest guest
As long as you post using a fake name/ID (or first name only) and an anonymous e-mail address, never mention the real names of anyone you know, and do not mention specifically where you live or work, I think that should be OK. On the home-page of this Yahoo! Group, in the Introduction Randi requests us to post anonymously for that reason: to maintain our safety. I use a separate fake ID or handle and a separate e-mail address just for bpd support groups because I was cyber-stalked for nearly 3 years by a former " friend " , so, I am concerned about Internet safety and make a point of maintaining my anonymity because of that. -Annie (a handle I use, short for " Little Orphan Annie " , because I feel like I have always been emotionally orphaned.) > > Perhaps a thread should be made to let folks know what's up?
Guest guest
Thanks for the explanation, Katrina. It sort of makes sense to me. Guest guest
I only got a few yesterday and then it stopped. I'm hoping that Yahoo Groups took care of it, and it's not some lurking thing now.
