Guest guest
It seems to me that at work I don't wait until I am hungry to eat. We have scheduled breaks, so I tend to eat something at each one so that I won't get too hungry before the next break. My tendency is to over do it. I have a real fear of getting hungry. Probably from years of being hungry on diets. But even at work the longest it would be between meals is 5hours. So it's not like I'd ever have a chance to get way over hungry. Not to mention it's usually so busy I don't have a chance to notice being hungry So I think I'll do some work over the next little while on overcoming my fear of hunger. My rational mind knows that I will not starve if I have to wait two hours to eat. But when I'm at work and know I can't eat for two hours my fears take over and tell me that I'll be starving by my next break and I'd better eat now to stave it off. Then I overeat because I'm eating out of fear. I know, it's silly, but that's the crap that goes on in my head. ARNIE
Guest guest
Five hours seems like a really really long time to me, and if I got hungry two hours before I could eat again, I don't know what I could do. I certainly wouldn't be able to concentrate on my job. Is there any way you can have a small healthy snack that you could eat between your scheduled breaks. Like some kind of energy bar that you could keep in your pocket, or something. Surely you can take bathroom breaks during that time, and perhaps take a minute to eat something.... I think I share this fear, and I'm glad you brought it up, as I start back teaching school tomorrow, and will need to address this as well. Guest guest
Such a great awareness Arnie! I have found that when such a notion 'pops' into my awareness its like a signal to me that its time for me to work on it. And that tends to be exactly what my mind seems to do - present ideas until I find one or a few that I am willing to give a go at. It seems to me that 5 hours is perhaps stretching the limit for digesting and not feeling hunger? I think you would really have to eat a goodly amount of protein and maybe some fat in order to even hold you that long. No wonder you are anticipating hunger and then eating to 'make up'?!? I think I would be thinking along lines of finding a way to eat a small something after 3 or so hours that could satisfy and hold me until the official break time. Our society is just too regimented for our own good. Taking care of YOU is as, or even more, important than if you munch some almonds or tote a 'protein bar' in your pocket so that you can be comfortable and content within yourself. I would even go so far as betting that your work would benefit if you don't have such a (potential) distraction as 'hunger' ;-) BEST wishes to you! Guest guest
ok, a hard boiled egg is very filling. And with a little Old Bay seasoning or something like that on it, it's very pleasant to eat as well! :-)To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Sunday, August 14, 2011 8:28 AMSubject: Re: Eating in anticipation of hunger Five hours seems like a really really long time to me, and if I got hungry two hours before I could eat again, I don't know what I could do. Guest guest
Arnie, Well, the problem here is that you will not die of starvation if you don't eat for two hours. (OK, I don't mean that quite as it came out ...) I normally start thinking about desiring food about 2 1/2 hours after my last meal. And so to wait another 2 1/2 hours can be trialsome. Instead of fearing that you will never eat again, you may feel annoyed, or gruntled, that you are very hungry. If I get very hungry I know I just have to eat and I can become testy. Testier than usual. So, since your fear of dying in two hours or so from hunger is irrational, the idea that you might get grumpy, is, in my opinion, not irrational, and that may be partly what you have to deal with. How to alleviate that period when you are hungry but cannot eat? Like I say, a hard boiled egg is one solution. It can be downed rather quickly and definitely will alleviate hunger. You can even slice the egg and put it in a plastic bag so you don't whop the whole thing in your mouth at one time. :-) Tai

Guest guest
Arnie, I think maybe your body is telling you that for you 5 hours is too long and a small snack before then would be a good idea. When I go out with my friend who does not eat breakfast and wants " dinner " around noon, I have to eat breakfast and then a small snack around 11. That way I don't over eat at lunch. I have found that a few almonds, or some cheese cubes. Protein and fat usually will do a good job. You could do that at your desk but do it mindfully. Just a thought. Sandy It seems to me that at work I don't wait until I am hungry to eat. We have scheduled breaks, so I tend to eat something at each one so that I won't get too hungry before the next break.
