Guest guest
Wow, thank you all so much for being so generous. It was nice (liberating?) to hear that you all began your IE in different ways. I guess I've been getting hung up on thinking that there was one 'right' way to go about things. I liked the idea of just picking out a random page of the book and will give it a try when I get a bit more confident with IE - and if my book ever arrives! In the meantime I've been reading all I can online about IE and mindful eating - thank you for the reminder about the resources here as they've been very helpful. What I hear from you most is that it's easiest to begin with a small change that calls to you. I'd love my first goal to be 'this week I'm going to be present while I eat' but while that calls, it's far too big and scary! Instead I'm going focus on recognising fullness at mealtimes and honouring that. I wasn't brought up to think that I had to clear my plate, but I was expected to do my best to do so - so I normally end up eating a few more mouthfuls than is comfortable/than I really want. I think that is a realistic first step for me. Thanks again everyone - and how wonderful it is to have this little space to learn about ourselves... Guest guest
I'll add just one more post to this thread. I haven't been doing this very long(several months), but the way I began was with the " am I hungry? question, because I was eating tons when I wasn't hungry. And then also trying to REALLY enjoy what I was eating, which meant minimizing distractions. I stopped reading or looking at catalogues or cookbooks while I ate, and instead, just focused on my meal, which really helped me get enough pleasure that I didn't need to immediately go in search of something ELSE to eat. Also, if I was really focusing on what I was eating, I was more likely to recognize when it was becoming just rote eating, and maybe stop. But it's nice to know that I really will be hungry again, no matter how much I may have overeaten at any given occasion, and that I will once again have the opportunity to have a pleasurable eating experience.
