Interesting! I'll set aside a time to do this. Funny, it scares me almost as much as the idea did of just eating w/o doing anything else. I couldn't believe how nervous that made me. Ellie, there is a little thing you can do to help find answers to your question - by and for yourself. Take a sheet of paper and using your non-dominate hand (left if you are right - handed, right if you are left handed) and write the first thing that pops into your head when you ask this question. Continue writing as quickly as you can record the thoughts and images that come to you. Don't worry about how the writing looks - even if its not readable - the thoughts and ideas will stay with you if you let them FLOW forth. When the stream stops or peters out, you can do what you like with the paper. Read it, frame it, toss it, burn it - your choice. And remember to NOT 'judge' the responses, they are simply bits of information for your own interest.

Ellie, I have only managed to eat without distractions a few times. It doesn't sit well with me, either. My preferred method of eating is either in front of the television or while talking to someone. I have tried to successfully multitask by paying attention to my food and my fullness/hunger signals while also participating in the other activity. I think eating is inherently a social activity and that one can incorporate IE principles without having to eat alone or while staring at the food and nothing else. But I sure do admire folks who can do this and who enjoy it.

Thank you, Mimi. I did eat my lunch at the table again today and it wasn't any easier. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I think I ate faster to get it over with. I know I didn't eat as much as usual, BUT I also didn't continue to eat (graze) after I was done with my lunch. That's an interesting new twist. Still pondering Katcha's analysis exercise, haven't done it yet....Ellie
