I thought it might be fun and profitable to have a chance to each list one particular tip that helps us eat mindfully and with enjoyment.

One thing I'm working on right now is eating the best parts, the most delicious parts of any food first and leaving the dry, less appealing parts for last. Why eat the dry, unappealing bits? Here they go to the dog or the trash. My big challenge is cereal. I have no idea why. If I eat cereal I have a much harder time hearing the sigh. Any suggestions? In the past I just didn't buy it or it was gone in a day. Now it takes three days but it's still not where I want to be. Thanks,Patti

I stopped using a plate for my favorite snacks. Before, I'd portion control it

to the point where I'd polish it off even if I stopped wanting it halfway

through since it was " allotted " so I didn't want to waste the opportunity. Now

if I want some veggies and ranch, I eat it right out of the tub. Now I eat a lot

less of it than I ever would have thought possible. I don't know if that counts

as a tip or not, but it's something that has certainly changed.

Bravo for you! And not only are you doing a great job now, I sense that you will

be able and willing to go onto whatever next step that works for you when it

presents itself.

I know it sounds strange, I've read the studies that mention the smaller plates,

etc.. But I only do this for snacks, not meals. I still use plates for meals,

but I don't measure it out like I used to, and now that I think about it, I

serve myself larger portions now that way I feel comfortable stopping halfway

and wrapping the rest up for later. Sometimes when I'm so close to cleaning my

plate I feel compelled to do it (I feel terrible throwing away food).

I imagine the instinct would be to tell me to just serve myself even smaller

portions, but then it just sort of looks depressing. I like seeing a heaping

mass and then stopping at will rather than looking at a modest morsel and

feeling like I'm deprived again (the scars of chronic dieting I guess).

I think one of the reasons I'm good at stopping is because I have acid reflux,

so I'm hyper aware of feeling over-full not only psychologically, but

physiologically as well. When I go over I'm punished for it with ridiculous

heartburn. While I wouldn't wish it on anyone, one perk is it makes IE somewhat

of a no-brainer.

That sure sounds like a tip to me, and yet another example of something that

seems counterintuitive, until you explain it. It makes perfect sense...
