Guest guest
You know...I feed my kids organic meats too. For beef, I make sure they are 'grass fed' because you know you see cows running for the corn and soy fields! Damn you cows! I also purchase organic eggs, chicken, turkey and uncured ham. My brother reacts terribly to soy (not all soy, just the flours and proteins like the milk) -- and he hasn't any problems with the meat that I purchase. However, I would say it isn't out of the realm. I feel that way too sometimes .... Here I come Mickey D's, I give up! But then I remind myself I would rather put my money into something that is actually food and not some corporations idea of food. What does a chicken, turkey and pig eat anyway? laura:) > > Hi, > > This is probably extremely paranoid of me, but I wanted to ask. I was at the health food store last night buying organic ground chicken and turkey, and a woman mentioned to me that her daughter can't eat organic meats because they are vegetarian-fed and their feed has a lot of soy in it. So the soy gets in her system and she has a reaction to it, just because the animals ate it? I'm asking because my girls can't have soy. Is this true? Please, please, please say no! This seems ridiculous to me, but I wanted to ask because I only give the girls organic meats. I'm so close to feeding them an all-Mcs diet. (Kidding). Guest guest
I know there are people who will tell me that the below isn't really " the truth, " but I will tell you anyway the policies as I understand them, and won't get into the corruption or lack of fact-checking and proof... The way it is SUPPOSED to work is, if a meat is labeled organic, the animal cannot have eaten GMO food.If the animal cannot eat GMO food, it most likely has been free-range or grass fed (chicken being described " free range " and beef being called " grass fed " ) because organic soy or organic corn feed are expensive... easier to just let the animal be on the pasture. IF the chicken is organic, and it says " vegetarian feed, " the chicken has still only supposed to be getting non-GMO soy and corn, but was likely kept in a house where there could have been unpleasant conditions (therefore many people choose " free-range " products due to desire of ethical treatment of animals prior to eating them hehe) BUT the problem is, no one is really testing this stuff. You see what I am saying? So, the best chicken to buy would be organic free range chicken (but you can't guarantee that some GMO soy didn't float over from the neighbors yard and land in the birds food) or GRASS FED organic beef. If you can't get organic beef, grass fed beef is better than nothing... the reason grass fed beef, sold at whole foods or other places, cannot be listed as " organic " is because when it goes to slaughter, it goes to a place like in the Temple Grandin movie, what's that called, a stock yard? and while it is there, it is going to be fed whatever they decide to feed it... so sometimes that is some GMO soy or GMO corn. It it's organic, it went to some special location for slaughter that supposedly has said they don't feed them GMO crap. But again here is probably a place where there lacks double-checking. So... after saying all this... I know for a fact after multiple attempts, I can only tolerate organic eggs. (I haven't compared regular organic to free range organic) Regular cheapo eggs from chickens fed GMO soy and corn cause me to feel sick, have " allergic " reaction to the egg (ie hershey squirts) Hope that helps some. Hi, This is probably extremely paranoid of me, but I wanted to ask. I was at the health food store last night buying organic ground chicken and turkey, and a woman mentioned to me that her daughter can't eat organic meats because they are vegetarian-fed and their feed has a lot of soy in it. Guest guest
I drive by this farm that says organic beef. I took note of the name and googled it. Can't find it. Short of driving up onto the guys property, any way to research organic beef sellers in my area? Guest guest
That is very interesting . I purchased local grass fed chickens and reacted negatively to both of them.I am allergic(or sensitive )to grass. Does any one else have any thoughts on this issue. Thanks for this previous post because I wouldn't have thought of this on my own Tammy F. Hi, This is probably extremely paranoid of me, but I wanted to ask. Guest guest
Tammy,We don't do well with the taste of grass fed, but my son also has few reactions to grains, so i dont worry. Sugar and cows milk he reacts to strongly. I don't really know what's better, but one thing I found very interesting is the information in temple grandins book about animals "Animals Make Us Human" where she describes the meat - poultry industry and how animals are being bread for food production as opposed to allowing for any natural selection for survival. Chickens are being bread to have huge breasts, but they are now having trouble walking because there is too much weight for those "chicken legs" to handle (one example of many- good read written by a woman with autism). While I am not even remotely close to being vegetarian, this REALLY bothers me....I would also be interested in others thoughts on meats: organic v grass fed Sent from my iPhone That is very interesting . Guest guest
Maybe you were talking to me at the butcher's? I remember having this conversation with someone at a new butcher shop I was at and I was asking the people what they feed their " organic " animals and they said " Well, the animals just eat WHATEVER... " I stood there aghast, as did the people behind me in line. What do you mean you feed the animals " Whatever " !?!?! That is an unacceptable answer to me. I just turned around and walked out. The meat there wasn't cheap either. My daughter is intolerant to soy. I buy meat that comes from an Amish farm that can guarantee that their animals have not been fed soy. We're ok with corn but not soy. My daughter has very severe apraxia as a reaction to soy and she gets diarrhea. The diarrhea and apraxia come back with meats that have been fed soy. Organic doesn't mean much. Organic just means that the animals haven't been raised using any antibiotics to address the superbugs concerns. The animals can be fed organic " field peas " which are related to soy. My daughter's super-senstive to soy...most people probably wouldn't react as strongly. I guess it's just how sensitive your child is to soy. There was a story on it on CBC Marketplace about 2 weeks ago. Even organic chickens contain superbugs (antibiotic-resistant bugs). The reason for that is that it's hard for even organic farmers to get a hold of eggs to hatch that are abx-free. The eggs then contain the superbugs -- the eggs hatch and the chickens then carry the abx-resistant bacteria. Really interesting story: http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2011/02/10/cons-supermarket-superbugs.htmlI really hate soy. If I could have my way, I'd make soy extinct and set all the soy fields in the world ablaze... Hi, This is probably extremely paranoid of me, but I wanted to ask. Guest guest
Alberta - USA is the #1 producer of soy...and corn. Oh, and it's organic and GMO...I know GREAT!! That is what we sell to the rest of the world.. I purchase organic meats (and eggs) simply because they have to feed it 'vegetarian feed' for the chickens (which means NO GMO soy or corn) and the grass fed beef - is that - grass fed. Last time I checked I didn't see cows running over to the corn field saying " oooo, look guys, corn! " -- Cows are supposed to eat grass. They have like a billzillion stomachs to take care of it... They also treat their animals with respect (organic/grass fed). I know that we are the top of the food chain, but it doesn't mean that we should treat these animals inhumanly. I read fast food nation - and I stopped going to fast food restaurants. I saw Food Inc (documentary) and talk about being 'aghast' -- I was sincerely disturbed. The other thing that REALLY bothers me -- is the sign near Houston Intercontinental Airport that says " hay for sale. " -- I'm like, what do with that? I called, and just asked politely...and she said " feed animals. " GAH!! (I said " thank you, and politely hung up.) But really do you want to eat cow that ate grass from off of a airport runway? The stuff that they use for deicing, the gas, the...'whatever' -- makes me crazy. I get my 'organic' grass fed beef from a place in Idaho. It's shipped to my house. The family has 7 kids (I come from that size family) and they raise their cows the way they raise their children, with respect. Sure, I pay more...but I don't eat that much red meat, and when I do, I want to make DAMN sure it's not eaten other cows, GMO corn, GMO soy, etc. When you really start to think about what you are eating (aka: what you are putting in your body) all the sudden you become this " food snob. " -- My husband is a pilot, and he eats out all the time...he comes home and doesn't want to eat out or go out...and when he gets up in the morning and has a homemade breakfast with juicer drink and coffee...he's in heaven. Food should be this wonderful thing that makes you feel full and wonderful...I have this new found love for eating, and I tend to be very careful about what I choose, because it sends a message to it's producer. When you eat crap, or you put your $$ towards crap, they just make more crap. I just can't do it anymore. Organic tends to be .10 to .40 more cents per pound, but it's better for the environment and better for our kiddos. I see kids drinking Sunny Delight (I don't even think it's real juice)..and I cringe. Where is the information to the parents that this is not nutrition. I thought I was good when I started biomed for my son - he ate everything organic and STILL had issues...I have learned SO MUCH in the past year and a half, I feel like I could teach a class. I realize it's expensive, but we cut out a lot of other things, like we don't have cable TV. I just purchased a new (used) monitor from a thrift store for $12 vs paying $60-70 at Toys R US. Both of my children ride used bikes I got on Craigs list (which they were in perfect condition) for $15 ea. (vs paying $50-$100 at Toys R US) I get a TON of hand me downs from my siblings, and I plan all of our meals to keep our food costs down. There really is no waste in our house. (I just got a composter too!) As a result, we all eat less. We aren't hungry. It also made me realize what we actually need to live, survive and be healthy... I've cut down on the enzymes I purchase, the vitamins I purchase and my kids are healthier. I look at their faces, and they aren't pale or got allergic shiners anymore... We've still got work to do, but the feeling of being overwhelmed is gone. When something needs to happen, it happens. If this 'disorder' has taught me anything, it's taught me to really think about the long-term vs short term. I'm an 'older' Mom...My kids will be graduating and going to college when I'm around 60...I want to be there. And not in a wheel chair or with oxygen hanging out of my nose...
Guest guest
True coversation I overheard in the store the other day: "Mom, can I get Captain Crunch?!" "No. You promised me this time you would choose a HEALTHY cereal." "But they don't have any healthy cereal." (I was in Job Lot) "What are you talking about? Look. Right here. Right under your nose. Apple Jacks" "But I don't want Apple Jacks." "You're getting the Apple Jacks. A promise is a promise...." Ok...even at my worst, When I was feeding my kids crap, I knew it was crap. Really?!??!?!?! No wonder these places are making money fist over foot. To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Tue, February 22, 2011 8:40:23 PMSubject: Re: Organic Meats Alberta - USA is the #1 producer of soy...and corn. Guest guest
Yes, if you are sensitive to soy/grass/corn/etc. and it is in animal feed, it’s possible that you will react to the meat. Tropical Traditions sells chickens that were raised on cocofood (coconut, no soy) they are expensive though. I purchased local grass fed chickens and reacted negatively to both of them.I am allergic(or sensitive )to grass. Does any one else have any thoughts on this issue. Thanks for this previous post because I wouldn't have thought of this on my own Tammy F. Hi,This is probably extremely paranoid of me, but I wanted to ask. (Kidding). Thanks.
