Guest guest
Tilley, I think we're twins separated at birth.Clothes are an issue for me. Right now, as I've said before, my weight is "normal" and "healthy" according to Those Who Dictate Such Things. I'm on the edge. Couple more pounds will put me over it. But really, what difference does it make to be one toke over the line rather than one toke under? The thing is clothes. I've got nice sport-specific technical clothes that fit me X pounds ago, are tight now, and won't fit if I gain any further. I can get larger jeans at the thrift store for a couple bucks, but not my activewear, which is expensive and therefore, in my case, impossible to replace. So the answer is restrict, or increase the activity, which I don't want to do just to keep from gaining weight, because then it becomes something I'm inflicting on myself, not something I want to do. Maybe it can be not about restricting, but back to permission: It's OK to stop eating now. Ellie but I can't just keep getting fatter and fatter. But I can't restrict either. I know where that leads. Right now, even contemplating restriction, however idly, I,m thinking I need to eat eat eat, because if I restrict I won't have those things anymore. Why is this all such a teeter-totter? Why can't progress be a smooth slope upward, or forward, or whatever direction one likes to think about. Why can,t we all be thin, naturally, or at least thin enough to fit in our clothes? Guest guest
Tilley, not sure if this has been said here for a while, but thought I'd post it again for those who might appreciate the thought. Gillian, this list's owner likes to remind us that 'fat is not a feeling'. If I say I am uncomfortable because my clothes are tight I can use that realization to make changes that address my discomfort. I can 1) wear different clothes, 2) recognize that how I'm eating is adding to my discomfort or 3) restrict my eating or 4) see if I can find an IE suggestion that I could focus on more. One suggestion that I still find challenging to do - have in conscious mind - is to find my satisfaction point and stop eating immediately instead of 'testing' that with a few bites more (or cleaning my plate). From what I've read here, just a bite or two less seems to make a huge difference in body weight. My difficulty is staying conscious in my eating. What trips me up more often than not is waiting too long to eat and then eating more because I am so hungry! I have my fingers crossed that you will find your own discovery that you can utilize instead of simply restricting. I agree, just the thought of restriction can trigger over eating for me and many others. Trying to avoid that like the plague sounds like a good idea to me. ehugs, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > Yeah Ellie! > > And back to the title of this post..... just wanted to say that I am really struggling with thoughts of restriction today. I feel so FAT, fatter than I was last week, last month, last season, and it feels so awful, and I was trying to figure out why I was feeling so crappy, and I think it's because the clothes I am wearing are too tight. I need to do laundry, so all the clothes I know feel good are too dirty to wear to work, and these pants are way too tight, and my bra is too tight, and and my shirt doesn't go down far anough because my stomach goes out too far now, and overall I feel stuffed in my clothes, ready to burst at the seams. And if this is how someone feels, then of course that person needs to DO something, and isn't the only thing to do restrict. Perhaps it's time to re-read the section about honoring your body in the IE book. Or perhaps it's time to go shopping again, and get more clothes that actually fit, but I can't just keep getting fatter and fatter. But I can't restrict either. I know where that leads. Guest guest
Katcha, I am curious about your words about how just a few bites translate into more body weight. Are you referring to some specific thread? I, too, have a difficulty to just stop and not keep on testing my satiety with a few more bites. I'd say that most of the time I am eating, I take 3 or 4 bites beyond comfort. On the side, I was thinking about getting IE for some of my family members. Do you know if it has come out in other languages? Thank you for moderating this forum. And for keeping a spirit of hope and encouragement to keep the exploration going. Guest guest
Responses below part replied to :-) > > Katcha, I am curious about your words about how just a few bites translate into more body weight. Are you referring to some specific thread? It was at least some months back so I don't think I could find the previous post. But what I remember was how this person said that they had found out that if they ate just a few bites less than they usually tended to, slow weight reduction seemed to happen for them. And it makes sense that I my staying pretty much steady at a weight level just might be related to my having established a 'satisfaction' level that results in maintaining that much 'body'? When I have been more mindful about my eating, IF I stop a bit sooner than 'usual' and allow myself to pause long enough, odds are that I will find - yep - I've had enough and really not interested in more food. Its the stopping when there is more food on my plate, and I'm enjoying eating - usually over hungry - then I can and do eat those last few bites without being FULL as I used to do. > On the side, I was thinking about getting IE for some of my family members. Do you know if it has come out in other languages? Have you gone to the Intuitive Eating web page and looked there? There is a contact link there and when I have emailed to the authors, they always reply. OR you could 'share' this by translating a few pages at a time, allowing discussion on what was said before going on to the next few pages. > > Thank you for moderating this forum. Guest guest
I hear you; I'm working on the concept of not resorting to " working harder " on IE when I feel fat and trusting my body and this process. I'm in my fat jeans right now - and they're tight all over. But, I'm not going to panic as I do believe this is working. Just not like a diet where the only goal is weight loss - which is always temporary. Hang in there. Guest guest
Katcha, your comment about taking just a few bites less has been very helpful. As if something shifted in my 'entitlement' to a few more bites after fullness. Also, I am amazed at how much resistence I have to feel the 'satisfied' marker. When I allow myself to feel whatever stage of fullness, it's amazing how clear the message is. I seem to start resisting just as I am closely approaching the 'satisfied' level. Thank you! Guest guest
As far as the " fat jeans " go, I went up to the attic, and evidently I got rid of all them sometime back (seven or eight years ago), so I went out again yesterday and bought another four pairs of pants that fit. It makes such a huge difference how I feel. I've always hated even snug-fitting clothes. It's discouraging, since I seem to still be gaining weight, but I feel like I'm having a much better relationship with food. And what Katcha said about paying attention to when I've had enough seems like it might be the thing to put some attention to. I've been honoring my hunger, and choosing foods that I really feel like eating, but, now that I'm aware of it again, I realize that I haven't been stopping when I am no longer hungry.m I completely forgot about my insight from a couple weeks back about how when I find myself suddenly speeding up, to get it all down, that I really was no longer hungry. And reminding myself that I CAN eat again, even, or especially, my favorite foods when I am hungry again, really helps. I'm also feeling some really negative effects of having too much salt, so went grocery shopping for things I like which don't have much salt, mainly fruits and vegetables, which I had kind of run out of and was sorely missing. It's no fun being dizzy, and having these kinds of pressure headaches, and feeling like my throat is clogged up. It is an incredibly stressful time of the school year--I honestly don't know when I am going to find the time to grade everything I have to grade--and I really need to take care of myself, but I also need to get my work done.... But I agree about not " working harder " at IE, just cultivating awareness. We really are each the best person for taking care of ourselves. No one else can possibly know as well what we need. Tilley > > > > Yeah Ellie! Right now, even contemplating restriction, however idly, I,m thinking I need to eat eat eat, because if I restrict I won't have those things anymore. > > > > Why is this all such a teeter-totter?
Guest guest
I really like what you reminded me that weight loss is not the only goal. I think that when I focus on weight loss I can easily get drawn back into diet mentality. So what are some of the other goals? For me one is to enjoy food without all the negative little voices of the food police. Another is to find an activity or two that I truly enjoy, especially that are active. I want to feel good about myself and comfortable in my own skin just the way I am. I want to feel the joy of life again and make friendships grow, volunteer, develop my creative skills and so much more. IE is important but I also need to focus on other things. Right now it's family too. We will all be getting together to celebrate the holidays. I want to focus on gratitude for so much and not so much on losing weight or what I am eating. Thanks for reminding me that its not just about working harder or losing weight. Sandy  I hear you; I'm working on the concept of not resorting to " working harder " on IE when I feel fat and trusting my body and this process. I'm in my fat jeans right now - and they're tight all over. But, I'm not going to panic as I do believe this is working. Just not like a diet where the only goal is weight loss - which is always temporary. Hang in there. Guest guest
Sandarah kudos to you for not panicking! I swear diet demons howl with glee whenever they catch a scent of panic - it usually means a feeding frenzy for them - lol! Just think how much you are forcing them to suffer their own 'dieting' - starve you crumbs!! (giggles) Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > I hear you; I'm working on the concept of not resorting to " working harder " on IE when I feel fat and trusting my body and this process. Guest guest
When I ask myself why I continue to participate here, its because I too get wonderful tidbits and supportive reminders that help me so much. I hope to be reading about your connection when it comes to you, and I will share what I find as well. ehugs, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > " My difficulty is staying conscious in my eating. Guest guest
Yes, and I think it's important to really trust the process even in the face of our fat jeans and other things that feel like set-backs. I had a day last week, where I ate an unusual amount of food. I stayed with it and allowed myself to eat whenever I was hungry, until I was satisfied. I ended up eating breakfast, two lunches, and dinner. I felt nourished and physically good, but I began to feel dread. What if practicing IE had expanded my stomach? What if eating until I was satisfied meant large amounts of food and subsequent weight gain? Well, lo and behold, it turned out that it was a few days before my cycle and my body needed the temporary spike in energy to carry out its hormonal functions. The next day, my eating needs were much less. Now, in past years I would have panicked and immediately started dieting, beginning the famine/feast cycle of doom once again. One of the biggest lessons I've learned from IE is to calm down around food.
