I have been have sooo much trouble with wanting to stand on her head with her bottom up and then balance on one foot!! ( I only like to nurse laying down on our sides) at first I laughed so hard I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen but now that my breasts are sore from being twisted and leaned on it is NOT funny anymore and I just cant get her to stay still, if I take her away because I feel she is just playing and really doesn't want to eat (even though she asked too) she gets upset so I say " now Em you have to lay still " she will nurse long enough to get about three sucks and then its twist and turn time I just don't know what to do this is really getting tiresome. Anyone else know/went through it? Guest guest
I wish I could find out too. Mine does the standing on one foot position too and I am getting so sore. She also does the twisting of the other nipple. Now she has started talking and keeping my nipple in her mouth which is not comfortable. At night she lays with her legs above my head and nurses upside down. And I thought she was hard to nurse when she was little. a sept9mom@... wrote: > In a message dated 6/29/00 6:58:39 PM Pacific Daylight Time, > Justjenfaith@... writes: > > << Any suggestions how to get a rambunctious bouncy one year old to settle > down > and nurse without twiddling the other nipple, standing on one foot or trying > to nurse upside down would be great! > >> > > If you find out tell me !!!!!!!! I'm laughing Jen because it wasn't so long ago that I remember writing in with the same problem......That twiddling drove me nuts!! I finally just would place his palm on the other breast with my hand over the top. I understand his wanting/needing to hold the other breast but couln't deal with the twiddling. It did help and I still have to do it occasionally now. As far as the " activeness " during the feeding I would just try and take him into his room and rock in the chair or lay on his bed, someplace quiet and without distraction. Also I would just tell him he needed to lay still or mommy would have to stop. Hang in there, I think it's just a stage and will get better!! Guest guest
Hi Jen, I must say, my ds will be a year old in just 13 days, and I never thought I would be so sad about it. Guess it goes w/it more so when you know it is your last child. It never seemed to bother me w/my other two, but I never was still nursing them. Now I am so sad to see my baby grow up. Sorry I can't offer much advice, when it comes to nursing manners. I always keep my one arm over my one nipple cuz I can't stand him playing w/them, lol, it hurts too much. Wish I could be of more help. Guest guest
Thanks for input advice etc. .... sigh ... she's such a pest, a *lovable* pest, but a pest nonetheless. I cover the other nipple with my hand and it ends up in a frantic war with her whacking my hands trying desperately to twiddle. I cover the other boob with tight fitting clothes, she still manages to wiggle those digits under then it's tweak tweak yank ... I have tried saying no more mummy nummy but my supply is always so fragile that I am afraid she will just lose interest if not allowed to twiddle and wiggle and then I'll lose my milk. So I endure .. but I am trying to make her ask for mummy nummy, I've taught her a baby sign (whacking her chest or mine, but hey. it's a start!) and she does use it. BTW, she only has maybe 2-3 serious nurses per day. I assume this is normal for a one year old?? It's been so long since I've had a nursing toddler I've forgotten. The joys of getting old ... Nice to see some old faces amongst all the new (and welcome to all new people, I'm jen, 36, married to Geoff (older than dirt) with 3 kiddies Sky 17 (and off to college in Sept sniff sniff), 8 and baby 1 on June 27th) jen

Guest guest
Jen, If you figure it out could you let me know because that sounds a lot like my 2 1/2 yo son! LOL I have never let him twiddle so that isn't an issue. Starting around one I would not let him nurse if he pulled up my shirt, he had to use a word for it. I wanted him to get in the habit of asking. Now at 2 1/2 he really has calmed down a lot and doesn't yank on my clothes. I would just stop nursing him if he wasn't behaving. Then I would tell him that he could nurse if he (held still, stopped tickling, stopped pulling etc.) would cooperate. It is much better by now and he is quite a polite public nurser. Not so much at home though! LOL Wendi http://www.lactivist.com breastfeeding info & resources Re: I'm back! Hi everyone, I've been offline forever but I am back. Sometimes the twiddling with the other nipple helps stimulate more milk flow... which lends a big reward to a toddler in need of a fast fix before finishing playing. Maybe you could start a nursing session with a brief hand expression to get the milk flowing -- hopefully your toddler will be so overwhelmed with the sudden flow of milk that he'll have to concentrate just so that there's not a spilt drop. I have to try hard to remember now, but I think he nurse 5-6 times per day (plus nights when he wasn't feeling well). Not all of his sessions were long though. Getting up, before nap and at bedtime were the big ones, mid-morning, after nap and dinner time were more snack like. If your daughter is a big eater (at the table) she's probably fine, but if she is a picker, you might try to encourage a few more longer sessions in a quiet room, for less distraction.
