Guest guest
These are some jobs that I did as a young kid. As I sit and here and remember and laugh at the good memories..I just want to add, I was cheap cheap cheap labor! (Gives new meaning to child labor!) Because I grew up in a large family, extras were tight, so earning ones own money was a motivator to get things you wanted, not necessarily the things you needed. I recognize that it was very important to my upbringing, and therefore, when I can, I offer it to kids who are interested. To this day, I am not afraid of hard work or a lot of work! -- Bring it, I say! Teaching that to my brother...UGH. Sometimes, I want to give him a swift kick in the pants... -Picking strawberries. I got a great tan. (Lots of Vitamin D!) -Watching Pets (and plants) while friends went on vacation. (learning how to be responsible for a living thing!) -picking dandelions (apparently they didn't know what nutritional value they had.) -- I got a whole 50 cents for a 5 gallon bucket...ah! -Weeding gardens. (I liked doing it - it was fun, and I usually got to pick out a veg that I liked as payment!) -Husking corn for our local restaurant. (friend of my Dad's, he paid me 5 cents for a piece of corn..) -Taking our next door neighbors dog for daily walks. (My Mother made me do this for free, as she said that it was nice to do things for old people.) -Peeling potatoes (for the same local restaurant) -- I must say, that I can peel a 5 lb bag of potatoes in under 10 min. It's pretty damn impressive. (and get rid of the bad spots!) Fast forward, I pay our neighborhood (girls) kids to help me 'watch' my kids (mother's helper) for $2. an hour (I tried to pay them more, but their mother said no, and then she came up with that rate.) along with: Weeding my flower beds. Folding Towels and Bedsheets. Vacuuming. Shredding my documents. watering my plants. and little household things that help me keep on top of things. (like cleaning out my silverware drawer) There are 3 girls (13, 11, and 10) in the family, and I ask to have them over on Saturday for 3-4 hours. This is when I get all my cleaning done, etc. I ask who wants to watch and play with the kids or they take turns doing a chores list. I love the help, and their parents like the fact they are learning about being responsible, learning the value of a dollar, and aren't wasting their time in front of the TV or being bored! The 'girls' also taught Jimmy and Maddie how to play soccer, how to draw with chalk on the road, hopscotch, and about little frogs (or skinks?) and lizards. It's such a different relationship when they are just a bit older...it's fun to watch too. Also, because summer was often a time when we tended to be 'bored' at night, my Mom paid us 5 cents for each chapter book we read. (We went to the library weekly) At the end of the summer, we could go and get an ice cream at Friendly's (which was near our house)... I hope this starts to get the brain moving...it's hard when your 13, your stuck between being a kid and trying to be grown up... If you lived next door, don't worry, I would find something! laura > > What would be a good summer job (very part time) for a high functioning 13 y/o kid??? Guest guest
if he can't get a job for any reason, here's an idea...have him take rolls of pennies and separate the ones that are older than 1984 or ? which have a lot of copper from the newer ones...a magnet will pick up the ones w/ metal..the copper pennies are worth more than their value and will not lose value when the dollar declines further in value. it's more of a business than a job though. BTW, nothing is full time as far as jobs for kids of that age, at least not legally.

Guest guest
I am not sure where you are coming from with these comments? Do your kids not do odd jobs in the neighborhood or around the house? I will help him get more comfortable talking to people if he has to interact on that level!!! > > > > What would be a good summer job (very part time) for a high functioning 13 y/o kid??? And no we don't have these type of things here. Here people are not that friendly. We live in long island and kids keep to themselves. Once they found out my son has autism, friends are very very hard to find and even harder to keep.
Guest guest
What about a supermarket? There's a supermarket close to my house that's fairly big and they hire a LOT of kids around 13 or 14 and kids work/socialize there. A very good environment. One of my nephews started working there when he was around 13 or 14. I am not sure where you are coming from with these comments? Do your kids not do odd jobs in the neighborhood or around the house? People usually don't pay kids here. I once tried to get these kids to socialize with my son and wanted to pay them for their time and that was the last time we spoke to that family. The mom told me that her kids could barely know things for themselves. Maybe it's the people I met but they aren't too social themselves. Like I told our old consultant, if I have to rely on others to socialize my son, I'll be disappointed. One person when he asked her what her name was said, " it's none of your business. " People aren't always receptive (unpredictable). Also the things they teach a child would amaze you, not always appropriate either.
Guest guest
I detassled corn one summer, it's challenging work, but easy to understand and builds a lot of strength. There are other people around with some socialization time but not constantly. > > > > > > > > What would be a good summer job (very part time) for a high functioning 13 y/o kid???
