Guest guest
I think phrasing can really help how we feel about things. When I say "it's OK to stop eating now," it's giving myself permission to take care of myself, both physically and emotionally. When I want to keep eating past fullness to nurture myself, I give myself permission to be nurturing in other ways -- to take care of my needs. It's also permission to eat again later. I can stop now because I can eat later. I can stop now because I have permission to feel my feelings and take care of myself without using food. At least that's how I try to look at it. Wow.... sometimes it's just some little thing someone says that smacks you right between the eyes. I've been focusing on giving myself permission to eat. Sometimes I eat way past full and still don't be able to come to a stop. It never occurred to me to tell myself, "It's OK to stop eating now." I've been internally yelling, "Stop eating!" and "Why can't I stop?" But permission to stop..... you've given me whole new territory to check into. Guest guest
Really. The phrasing makes a difference! In line with this is Sandhara's post about appropriate response to different needs (getting warm when cold, for example.) There are a lot of areas in which I let myself be able to stop. If I'm out running and have had enough.... I walk the rest of the way. It is OK to stop now. The end of October, I went out of state to do a very long bike ride I'd been training for, and after it was over, I put my bike away and didn't look at it until yesterday, because enough was enough and it was OK to stop. Now I'm ready again and have biked moderately two days in a row and felt very strong despite (or maybe because of) a month off. It all equals out because I let myself stop when I'd had enough (instead of forcing more) and take it up again when I was ready. It can be the same with eating: It's OK to stop, and as you said, I can eat again later. It's good just to let things rest for awhile.Ellie To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Monday, December 5, 2011 2:37 PM Subject: Re: OK to stop eating I think phrasing can really help how we feel about things. Guest guest
" It's okay to stop eating now. " For some reason, putting it that way sounds so comforting to me. When I think about it, sometimes it is as if I feel I have to want to keep on eating. Maybe something I learned in childhood? I grew up on a farm, food being the only thing we had in abundance. We were always encouraged to eat heartily, as were guests in our home. It was also how my mom expected us to show love, by eating whatever new recipe she had come up with for the day. Maybe I really need to hear that it's okay to stop eating now. That's a lightbulb moment for me. Guest guest
What an incredible notion. That totally puts things in a different perspective, though I'm hard put to say why exactly. Of course one can stop eating, but to actually tell yourself that.....it's so different from " you must stop eating now, " which is a threat. Permission, yes....I'm going to try it tomorrow and see how it feels. Guest guest
This I know really well. I was force fed by my mother for years. She was not a "good mother" unless I was a chubby kid and she tried and tried. Mealtimes would take hours at the table with her cajoling, threatening, pleading, and trying to get the spoon in my mouth. I disappointed her by being a skinny kid with little interest in food. She used to mock me by saying I was "scrawny" and making faces. Sigh.
