Guest guest
Welcome to the group...even though I'm not very active. I'm pretty much in your situation in that I just found out that I can't get my teeth straightened by an orth unless I get the surgery to correct my underbite. What is and open bite? is that where you bite down and there's a gap between your upper and lower teeth in the front? I don't know if the pics should scare you cuz it's a temporary thing. The pics don't scare me at all in terms of the appearance cuz I know it's temporary, but the potential for depression because of the discomfort and inability to eat real food scares me. The cost, too, scares me, and probably won't be able to have the surgery if insurance doesn't pick up a significant portion of it, and may just have to suffer the consequences later in life from a bad underbite and crooked teeth. I'm already 38, and if I can't afford it now, by the time I could I'd probably be too old for it to be worth it. I think reading other posts and talking with your surgeon you'll come up with questions. What did he say, by the way? If you don't mind, what kind of cost was he talking about? I have an appt with and surgeon July 3. > Hi Everyone. I am new to the group, found it thru a search engine. Guest guest
Sleemie: Your right with your guess regarding my specific problem. My teeth wont meet when i try to bite. Actually only 2 of my teeth (on each side) actually meet when i bite but they are also crooked. I'm just starting to sort thru all the postings and did find one from another " new to group " that gave ALOT of questions and such to ask your surgeon. My first appt. last week cost me $170 (!!!) and no one told me there would be charge for that first appointment. So i recommend you check with yours if this will be your first consult. My dr. has yet to give me any prices as he said he needs to see my MRI first, which i will have done this friday. My insurance covers 100% of the MRI (i called today to check, the dr. didn't do that for me) and said they'd cover 70% of my surgery, which is pretty good coverage. I dont know that i can even cover the balance but for now i'm just going one step at a time. My dr. said if i dont get the surgery i could loose alot of my teeth over the next 20 years due to the way my bite is. Whoa! That's not scarey at all huh? I'll let you know of any prices i get once i start to get that far, if i get that far. Still undecided how much i want to do or can afford to do for now. Thanks for your input though. > > Hi Everyone. Guest guest
Here's another site for you: http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ Welcome. And yes, the surgery comes with sticker shock. The good news is that sometimes it is covered by your medical insurance -- not dental, but medical. I guess you know what ortho you're gonna use! Ask the surgeon how long he thinks it will take you to get ready for the surgery; how many of these procedures he's done; how often he does them; whether he ever has relapses, and if so, how many; what you can expect in long-term retention; exactly what procedures he recommends; whether he wires or splints or both, post op; how long his patients typically take to recover; what his fees are; whether he has partners who assist him; whether he makes his own cuts, or shares that duty with his assistant; how long he thinks the procedure will take; where he does it, and how well the nurses there are prepared to deal with orthognathic surgery patients; whether he asks for autologous blood donations; whether he usually needs transfusion(s); How long you'll be in the hospital; and whatever else you think you want to know. Your boss can also help you, I'll bet, with any questions that arise. If it's any comfort to you, I don't know anybody who has been through this who didn't start out frightened and overwhelmed. Truly, the worst part of this surgery is the anticipation. The actual surgery generally tends to be not so bad as the expectation. You may have numbness post-op (ask the surgeon what he expects), but most people do not have much pain. You may have extensive swelling and weakness, however. I think most people are well pleased with their results, especially looking back at having done. I hope that you will, too, however you decide to go at it. Cammie > Hi Everyone. Guest guest
Post op hair loss is normal and temporary. It is because of the fast weight loss. The key word is TEMPORARY. Your hair gets thin not totally falls out. Colleen new to group Hello, I have just recently joined your group.I have just returned from my orentation at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston.I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this facility. The staff seemed great, but I would still prefer a couple of personal references. Also, can anyone elaborate on the post-op hair-loss. Do you actually loose all of it? How about the incisions with the lap vs. the open. I have tried to find photos but haven't been successful. Guest guest
I had open RNY. My scar starts from my breast bone and is about 6 inches long. I had no staples or stitches on my incision. My Dr uses the new 'glue' and it looks beautiful. Hardly a scar at all. It truly looks like a plastic surgery did my surgery. I did not have lap so I can't answer from experience but have talked to people who stated they where in more pain because the 4 little cuts go thru muscle. But their scars are a lot smaller. Maybe we can hear from some laps. I was not in pain after surgery. I am a chicken when it comes to pain but I never used the morphine drip in hospital or pain meds when I came home. You need to ask your dr. how he cuts because every dr is different. Mine showed me on an office visit how he would be making the incision. I hope this answers your question Colleen new to group Hello, I have just recently joined your group.I have just returned from my orentation at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston.I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this facility. Guest guest
I am also new to the group. I had LAP and a hernia repair on 1/15/04. I am so glad to have found your web site. It has been so-o-o-o-o-o-o helpful. Just about everything that I have experienced has been discussed. I am on 1 oz. of protein 3X's a day, 1 Flinstone vit. and a Tums per day. I'm investigating taking more supplements. So I found some subligual B12 and some protein shakes that I like if they're watered down. Three weeks after my first surgery, I had to have an open hernia repair on a repair that I'd had done about 3 years ago. I had alot of pain and it took a long time to get going with exercising and such, but I'm AOK now and glad I was able to have this done because I would have quit probably a month after I started! I'm 48, a nurse, own a personal care home, and have a great husband of 14 years who supports me at all times. I am very lucky. We went to the grocery store this AM and I said to him,did you notice how I can fly around the store now? He said yep and without huffing and puffing! I suffer from asthma, diabetes(which has been resolved) high cholo. But I'm doing just fine now. Enough rambling. Guest guest
Sherri, I had my surgery at Beth Israel, my surgeon was Dr. Forse who went to Boston Medical Center after my surgery. I believe that some of the people who handle the GBP surgery may have worked with Dr. Forse at one time or another. Being in Boston, having your surgery is one of the better places to be. I suffered hair-loss but it was due to the loss of the protein that was severely reduced to the surgery. Your surgeon or even your PCP could recommend a dermatologist to determine your loss. I did not lose all of it. I have the rows of staples and my incision runs from just below my breasts to above my belly button. 10 days after the surgery I had the staples removed and could drive after that but I lost 12 weeks from work but some of that was my fault. I am in Haverhill, where are you?
