Cytomel & Ferritin

Hi Nick and Val

I am new to this support group...

Stated that Cytomel has a 3.5 day shelf life... what exactly does that mean?

That Cytomel will stay in your system / blood for the 3.5 day or should it mean 3.5 hours

in your blood once taken?

What is Ferritin?

Thanks,

I had a total thyroidectomy 4 + yrs ago and was only on Cytomel for 2 months cuz around 3.5 - 4 hrs after taking 25 mcg of Cytomel I would literally crash... Lab work did show that my T4 level was zero which would indicate that there is no thyroid gland left producing hormones... Loved the amount of energy that Cytomel gave me.

I read some peoples posting about Ferritin... Please tell me more about Ferritin as I have an appt this Friday and would like to request blood draw for this...

The HALF LIFE of T3 in the body depends on how hypothyroid oyu are. If you have plenty of T3 in your body that it is not all running to the cells as fdast as you take it, it can last 48 hours, if you are VERY lwo in thyroid it cna be gone in 4 hours. This si why small frequent doses work best until you get the dose up higher this also mimicks your body's production of T3 more tha a big dump twice a day would. It is also easier on your adrenals to have a trickle comeing in rather tha a dump all at once,-- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WVhttp://www.stopthet hyroidmadness. com/http://health. groups.yahoo. com/group/ NaturalThyroidHo rmonesADRENALS/http://health. groups.yahoo. com/group/ RT3_T3/http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/HypoPets/

Thanks for the feedback...

I was on 150 mg of Armour b/4 the shortage situation ..... then he put me on 62.5 mcg of Cytomel only as I am very allergic to Snythroid... then was switched to 125 mg of Erfa Thyroid to get the T4 also...but was taken off the Cytomel... I loved the Cytomel for the energy level I experieced til the crash of no hormones w/in 3.5 hrs of taking 25 mcg of Cytomel, the evening dose was 12.5 mcg of Cytomel... I fired that doc and seeing a new one this friday cuz that doc wants me to decrease the dose of Erfa from 125 mg to 90 mg per day... is he insane to do that to someone who does not have a thyroid and I was at 150 mg of Armour.... he said it is due to my tsh equals zero... yeah - tsh has been zero for 4 yrs now.... nothing for it to stimulate...

Could Ferritin be why I am so tired and no energy?

Sounds to me liek you were nto on a high enough dose of Cytomel nor had it dosed correctly. It needs ot be taken a MINIMUM of twice a day but fo rbest result most of us take ours 4 times a day or even more. Ferritin drops when T3 levels do and how fast proabbyl depends on if oyu are menstrual or post meno. But drop it does even in Men if T3 syats low any length of itme. The it becomes a total catch 22 to try to raise it, as to riase it you need mega doses of iron and you r body will only hold the oiron if oyu have some T3 in your body so you ahve to carefull y raisse the two together.,-- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WVhttp://www.stopthet hyroidmadness. com/http://health. groups.yahoo. com/group/

I am going to look over some lab work I had done in July 2008 - yep old labs but than is when an alternative doc ordered more tests than an ordinary endo did for me... the alternative said that I am adrenal deficient, but wants me to relax more to improve adrenals.. Found out that I am insulin resistanct and told to watch diet and sugar intake.

I will check to see if he tested ferritin... Thanks for all the information...

I am so exhausted lately and no energy - I was guessing it is due to decreasing my thyroid dosage which I think is stupid on a patient w/ no thyroid gland...

, low ferritin can definitely contribute to weakness and fatigue. Ferritin is a protein in the body that binds to iron. The most useful test for iron levels is ferritin. Most docs want to see your ferritin levels at around 80. Mine was at 8 on my first testing, and is now 32. I can tell even a little difference in my muscle strength and energy with daily iron supplementation. It's hard to get ferritin levels to raise, even with supplements, so some folks go the IV route with venofer treatment.

I'm heading out to an appointment right now, but I'll be glad to give you more info later if you'd like.

By the way, low ferritin can also affect how your body uses thyroid hormone.
