Guest guest
I am discovering that noticing what I'm doing without jumping into control is difficult. Earlier I was eating something that wasn't working for my body but it tasted good and still has that glimmer of the forbidden. I am working on unforbidding - but old habits die hard. So, as I was eating, I was trying to find where choice lived inside of me. I witnessed a little tug of war - another taste, another " do I really want this " , a silent " gimme! " back and forth for quite a while. Then, eventually I stopped. I don't think that I was in charge though, I think I'd just had enough for the same reasons that cause me to stop at any other time. Any more and I'd have probably been sick as I'm feeling a little congested right now anyway and this sugary thing would have sent me over the edge very easily. And, I can observe right now, that there's an emotional storm quietly brewing inside of me where getting sick and staying home and watching tv for several days without interruption sounds like Heaven. That's new - yes, I want some serious time out! Ha! And, I don't have to get sick to have it! Well, well. This is new ground. Sigh. This is most certainly not the same turf as " diet now for that summer bikini " - not the same at all. Boy oh boy. Guest guest
" And, I can observe right now, that there's an emotional storm quietly brewing inside of me where getting sick and staying home and watching tv for several days without interruption sounds like Heaven. That's new - yes, I want some serious time out! Ha! And, I don't have to get sick to have it! " That's exactly what I've been thinking about recently-- figuring out what I REALLY need. I've been asking myself that at all the times when I feel like eating, but I'm not hungry. After lunch, when I'm wanting something sweet-- what I really want is a little more time to myself before classes start. I don't want lunch to be over( and 25 minutes goes by really fast) and it be time to teach again. Actually, there are a number of times during the day when that't it, that I want more time to myself. Or I want to relax. Or I want to escape from pressure/tensions. It's so much easier to recognize those other things when I'm not combining eating with anyone else. My whole life, I have read while I've eaten (except during family meals) which is a very pleasurable combination, but now that I've made a conscious effort to separate them, it's much easier to differentiate between the eating part and the other part, and say, " no, I don't really feel like eating; I feel like reading. " I think I've had realizations like this before, but at some point I've let them fall by the wayside..... As far as needing time off, when I very first started teaching someone told me to USE my sick days, and that's the best advice I ever got. You don't have to be sick to take a day off work. If that's what you need--time home watching TV, then just call in sick. The way I justify it in my head is, " I will be sick if I have to go in to work today, " . Then perhaps you won't feel the need to eat the sweets that really will make you sick. Guest guest
I think stopping when you've had enough, before you got sick, is a victory. Even if you feel that you could have stopped earlier, you still stopped at a point where you might have eaten past before. And you did it because you are noticing more. That's awesome. Keep asking the questions without the expectation or pressure to stop, and I think it will get more and more natural. Mimi Subject: Re: Emotional eating - or just needing extra weight?
