I'm returning after being away from IE for at least a year. I got caught back up in the diet mentality. I got out my book and reading. I'm really struggling with doing this again. The cravings are bad. Needing to get back in the swing of things.Debbie

For me, I find that my cravings are the worst when I'm too hung up in doing

things perfectly. For example, I know that when discussing legalizing, many

books or sources tell you to legalize the " forbidden " foods, but only eat them

when you are hungry. I had to allow myself to eat those foods *even when I

wasn't hungry* and be okay with that (much easier said than done), before I

think I really, truly started to believe that I would not have to starve myself

anymore. Before that, I was being too restrictive with IE and treating it like

another diet. Once I totally gave in to my desires, they were *so* much less

intense.

I'm not saying that I only wanted to eat celery sticks and lettuce. There was

definitely junk food involved. But binges became something that lasted a meal

before I went back to more normal eating patterns, instead of lasting days or

weeks. Now, I find that amounts I used to eat that would have just been an

average meal often make me feel so stuffed I'm ill. Can't believe I never

noticed that before, but it took me quite a while and more than a little bit of

patience to get there.

So, take it slow. Baby steps are good. In fact, they're awesome.

And welcome back.

Welcome back, Debbie. Glad you are reading up again and determined to kick the diet mentality to the curb. It sounds as if you are very hard on yourself. In a lot of ways I think IE is about giving up the struggle -- the struggle to restrict; the struggle to do things just so; the struggle to control. What would happen if you stopped struggling with the cravings? If you are craving something, why not eat it? Why not sit down and lovingly give yourself the food you are craving and try to be present with yourself as you eat, even if you are only present for a few minutes? Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the welcome back! Mimi, I really never even "thought" I was being hard on myself. What a lovely way to look at it!!
