Amy,

Be careful. Just because you are able to swallow doesnt mean your tummy

can handle it. Remember the reason for the blended/soft diet isnt to

punish you or to make you crazy, its because you has some major work down

there and you are still healing. I switched a little soon i think and

landed back in over night with an ulser and back to the diet all over

again. Dont go nuts just cause you think you can.

These are only my opinions im sure others will have other input.

Amy,

I'M YELLING AT YOU! :)

Seriously, the reason you can't eat large bites is because the area at the

end of your esophagus entering the stomach, has been made smaller to avoid

overeating, taking TOO BIG OF BITES, and " woofing " down the food. My Dr.

makes them approx the size of a nickel to a quarter in diameter. This is a

good way of preventing people from eating HUGE bites. Everyone is

different, some can tolerate large bites as long as they chew it til it's

mush. I for example, still take small bites of things like meat, poultry,

baked potato, etc., but can tolerate larger bites of things with juice

(soups, chili, etc.), and/or salad. Don't overdue it sweetie, I KNOW how

awesome it may taste, but you can develop some serious complications if you

over due it too soon. You just underwent major abdominal stomach surgery

that needs time to heal as Beth indicated.

Please be careful!

Now...about the sex...was it good? :)

Hi Amy--

My understanding is that the opening from the stomach pouch that

empties into the intestines is about the diameter of a pencil eraser.

Specifically, I remember Dr. Reines and Dr. Thayer using that exact

analogy and approximating the size with their fingers (OK-style hand

gesture) during several different NWH over that past 20 months.

As a visual thinker, this size reference helps when I come to that

perpetual question: " Am I done chewing yet? " or " Will it fit on an

eraser tip? " At 16 months out...I do still ask myself that.

Another visual that I use it this: I consider my stomach (pouch) to be

a garbage disposal. Normally, things do down it just fine. However, if

something gets lodged (a piece I didn't chew well enough) it is either

going to have dislodge on it's own and finish going down the pipeline

or be dislodge (usually vomitting).

This is how I think of my post-op system...perhaps it will make sense

to others as well.

Cool analogy! What a way to put all this into perspective.

Thank you from another visual thinker.

Kathy,

Your body will go through many of these “adjustment” periods. It has to

learn how to deal with food again, and may stop losing for a short time.

Don’t lower your food intake! That will only cause your body to go into

starvation mode, and REALLY plateau. Be patient. I’m sure you will start

losing again soon.

At 3 weeks post-op, I plateaued for about 2 weeks, then started losing

again at a slow, but fairly constant rate.

Shortly after surgery, your body notices that it is not getting very

much nourishment. Often times it will go into a hibernation mode where

it operates at a very slow pace so as to save its reserves. Weight loss

stops then. If you add protein supplements, the body senses that

nourishment is back and then operates at a normal rate and weight loss

begins again. At least this is the theory. I recommend that you just

stay off the scale unless you are being weighed by your doctor. Focus

on preportioning your food to fit your pouch and stop eating when that

is gone. Keep up your supplements and liquids and don't worry about

plateaus. If you do no weight your self, you will never know if you are

at a plateau or not.

Kathy,

I was approx 1 1/2 years post op when I hit a massive plateau...My Dr. asked

what I was eating, told him, found out I wasn't eating ENOUGH! I up'd my

intake, and off it went! Weird, but as always, you need fuel to burn!

QUESTION

Good Morning Everyone,

Just a quick question.

I am now 9 wks. post-op. My start weight before surgery was

267 lbs. I lost in the first 3 wks. like 25 lbs. then when I wet to

soft foods I seem to not loose any for about 2 wks. OK YEA I

WAS THINKING I AM THE ONLY ONE THIS IS NOT GOING TO

WORK FOR!!~!~!

Anyway...... I have made a great effort to get in ALL my protien

and water. I did this and three days afterf I started I this, loose 4

lbs...

Does this happen to anyone else? One would think less food

more weight loss.

Sooo to say the least i try to get in at least 60 grms. of protien a

day and always get in my fluid.

thanks for anyones opinion,

Kathy V.

I discovered Snapple diet rasberry ice tea!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!

Where are you having surgery done? That is the way Dartmouth handles

too. Such a [pain when you live 2 1/2 hrs away. I needed to stay in

the area over night since my surgery was at 7:30 and needed to be there

for 6:30 to get pre-op done.
