Kathleen:

Dr. Mont & Dr. Dolphin also mentioned it to me on Tuesday. It is made

by (same manufacturer as the Conserve Plus) and has the same

size " ball " as the Conserve Plus - in fact, I believe they said it

uses exactly the same " cup " as the Conserve Plus.

It should yield the same range of motion and resistance to dislocation

as the Conserve Plus for those patients where the top of the femur is

so badly deteriorated that they can not be (reliably) resurfaced.

Actually, Biomet and Corin make bigger heads than , from what I

can see. Check out their websites. For biomet, go into the medical

professionals link, and check the M2a-38 system. 38 mm to 60 mm heads

there.

HELLO ERIC,

Thank you for your info. Now at least I know I did hear what I thought I

heard. What time were you at Sinai on Tuesday? (Just curious. My appt. was

at 2:30; Dr. Mont finally had a few minutes for me around 3:30.) Can you tell

me any more about your situation re: resurf vs. THR?

HELLO GUENEVERE,

I think you're the person I've been needing to " meet. " I hope you can tell

me more about the advantages of your device and your experiences with it.

Also, would you be willing to share the reason that resurf wasn't an option

for you?

In addition to being bone-on-bone, I have some cysts and a spur, but Dr. Mont

said he's " 98% " sure I can be resurfaced, the final 2% being contingent on

the actual condition of the bone, which can't be known pre-op. (BTW, I

really don't have a problem w/ that lack of certainty. Much as I don't want

a more radical, invasive procedure, I d/w a resurf if the bone condition is

likely to result in a much-too-soon failure. I'm trusting that I can trust

his judgment because of the clinical trials, since it's in his interest play

it safe, right?)

Age-wise, I'm marginal for resurf -- 61 in May (shortly after the surgery) --

and my OA has progressed very rapidly. I realize that the bone will continue

to deteriorate, that resurfacing does not halt the disease process. So now

I'm wondering if the post-op rate can be estimated from the progression over

the past year. Does anyone know anything on that subject?

I went to the Biomet site; what a long menu of devices!! Do you know how/why

Dr. Mont selected the one he did for you? Did he explain it all to you?

(I'm curious about how much and what kind of communication about technical

details is reasonable to expect. I like to know a lot more than I really

" need " to know. It just makes me feel better if things make sense to me.)

Thanks to you and to everyone for all the help and information I've gotten in

the past two weeks.

Kathleen:

My appointment was at 11:00 but I think we actually met with Dr. Mont

and Dr. Dolphin around 12:15 or so. We might have passed you as we

left - small world, eh?

I am hoping for a resurface job but my hip is in pretty bad shape and

he's not sure he can do it (before all the Belgian Resurfers chime in

- going to Dr. Desmet really isn't an option for me). If he can't do

the resurf, I would like to get the metal-on-metal, large head THR.

It should give similar range of motion, resistance to dislocation and

(hopefully) long life! He has agreed to that approach.

Dear Tennis Lynda from tennis Saeed,

Previous posts have indicated that MRI readings work just fine. I believe a

radiologist posted that.

By the way, I had bilateral simultaneous last July 2nd and I am a terror on

the tennis courts- I'm moving fast again and loving it! Donna of LA is also

doing well with regaining her great tennis form.

Lynda,

I got OA in 1988 and gradually declined until it was difficult to walk a year

ago. I had surgery July 2, 2002 and I was able to walk without crutches in 8

weeks. I hit my first tennis balls against the wall in late August, on the

court in September and by early December I was able to play sets. My strength

and running ability have gone up another level in January and now it is just

a matter of regular conditioning so that I can go from 2 sets to 3+ sets.

Even if I decided not to play tennis, I am thrilled to be able to walk long

distances without pain-- I have almost forgotten that I ever had OA!

Best to you, you will do the same.
