Guest guest
Jinny, You've come to the right place for information but PLEASE do not assume that you have colon cancer. There are MANY causes of occult blood in the stool, most of which have nothing to do with cancer. (That's why it is not considered a cancer screening test)Get the colonoscopy done as quickly as possible so you know what's going on and then you can deal with the results. You're right in that the prep (drinking whatever colon cleansing agent your radiologist prefers- there are several different products available, they will prescribe the one they like)is the worst part of the process. If they prescribe the gallon of 'go lightly'solution, try mixing it with some crystal light lemonade mix and refrigerate it. Good luck and please let us know how things turn out! We'll be thinking of you! Guest guest
Well, that's a relief!! Thank you so much for emailing! No, I did not realize there were many other causes for blood in the stool. I still plan to hang around and learn more. -- Re: Hello, I'm new Jinny, You've come to the right place for information but PLEASE do not assume that you have colon cancer. There are MANY causes of occult blood in the stool, most of which have nothing to do with cancer. Guest guest
Hi Jinny -- That story sounds familiar to me. All I had was a low hemoglobin and some bowel irregulatities that I was treating with an over-the-counter preparation. They did both a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy as there can me many causes (both in surgery and internal medicine) for anemia. Good Luck. Guest guest
Great tip about the crystal light lemonade mix - I'll keep that in mind. They also have pills (40) that you can take but you have to press your doctor for them. My physical therapist told me about them. She gets really sick with the pre-op and since she gets screened regularly (she has colitis and is at increased risk) her doctor switched her to the pills. Guest guest
My husband got the pills last time too. Much better. I got to drink just a small bottle of phospa soda, I think it was, when I had mine one year ago. It wasn't too bad. I could not see myself drinking all that " sea water " . Guest guest
My husband got the pills last time too. Much better. I got to drink just a small bottle of phospa soda, I think it was, when I had mine one year ago. It wasn't too bad. I could not see myself drinking all that " sea water " . Guest guest
Hi Jinny, Sometimes I think it's a good idea to switch drs because they seem to have a tendency to ignore the obvious if they think they know you too well. Sometimes you have to be really persistent with them but it shouldn't have to be that way. I don't know why some drs will order certain tests with no problems but then others will just say " it's not necessary. You're not old enough for that yet. " I can't see what difference a person's age makes if they are having symptoms. I always felt it's better to be safe than sorry. Good for you for switching drs. Then I was told it was probably the medications I take. It was always some excuse and I felt I was being herded in and out of her office--I was seeing her too many times and she was sick of me. So, I went with my gut instinct and switched primary doctors. This guy was recommended not because he's a good doctor, but because he's a christian doctor... that doesn't make him a good doctor, but I felt he was very caring and thorough with me. I had a low blood count for many years that the dr said was " just anemia. " I took him at his word because I figured he was a dr and knew more than me. I was 37 at the time. Luckily for me he retired and I had to go to another hematologist so I chose the dr my mother was using for her Breast Cancer. As soon as he saw how low my blood count was he ordered the fecal occult bllod test which was also positive. I was scheduled for a colonoscopy the next week and I had several precancerous " polyps removed. The dr said if I had continued to ignore my symptoms and the other dr didn't retire I would have eventually ended up with Colon Cancer. Thankfully I was one of the lucky ones. Right after my colonoscopy my brother was telling me he had the same symptoms I was having...low blood count, tired, achy and he had a pain between his shoulders that ran around to his stomach. Finally we got him to go to the dr and he had the colonoscopy done but the dr found a large mass in his colon which was cancer. He was operated on in 11/93 and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer with Metasis to the Liver. A year later my adored big brother was gone. Good luck to you. Guest guest
That is such a great tip about the Crystal Light lemonade. I also get very sick from the prep and have a hard time trying to get the little 4 oz bottle of Phoso. I tried mixing it with Orange Juice. It was ok but I don't like OJ either. I refuse to drink a gallon of the Go_lightly. That stuff is just too nasty. Next time I have to go in 2 yrs I'm asking for the pills. But I'm definitely going to remember the Crystal Light. Thanks...Dianne Kathy wrote: Great tip about the crystal light lemonade mix - I'll keep that in mind. They also have pills (40) that you can take but you have to press your doctor for them. My physical therapist told me about them. She gets really sick with the pre-op and since she gets screened regularly (she has colitis and is at increased risk) her doctor switched her to the pills.
