Guest guest
amy- i learned this from geneen roth's books: wait till you are hungry (3 or 4 on the hunger scale). take a minute to really think what you want. go through all the options in ur head of whats available. Previously forbidden foods as well as regular foods. (hmmm- grill cheese? omelet? yogurt with nuts? chocolate bar? smoothie? ice cream? pasta? grapefruit with sugar?salad with croutons?) thats what i do. then i realize i want sweet (or salty) or crunchy (or liquidy) etc. and decide what to have serve yourself, on a plate, SIT DOWN, focus, chew, eat etc, till you feel youve had "enough" ("enough" is a whole other post worth of info) Geneen Roth writes about how when she first stopped dieting, she ate cookie dough for weeks at a time. breakfast lunch dinner, whatever. cuz thats what she really wanted. then one day she wanted lasagna or something... if you (as i often do) feel as though after a meal you MUST have something sweet, then you actually must stop eating the meal before satisfied, and literally "save room for dessert" youre not supposed to eat if not hungry. that is the ultimate goal. hopefully you will be able to stop when you have allowed yourself what u really craved. dont fear mindless snacking! as long as you pay attention and be in the moment, itll never be "mindless" good luck! I have read the IE book, so I have an idea, but I find the idea of legalizing foods a little intimidating I guess. I've read back on a lot of posts here but seem to find more successes over certain foods (which is great!) but less specifics on how to go about the process. Do you pick one food at a time? One "class" of foods? Or just choose whatever forbidden food sounds good at the time?Eat it when you're hungry? Instead of a meal (or as a meal, rather)? When you crave it? or maybe after a meal to indulge your "taste hunger?"When and how do you stop? It is difficult for me to stop eating foods that taste good even when I'm full sometimes. I am really afraid of this leading to bingeing. Or heavy mindless snacking, which really is kind of like a long drawn out binge for me. Guest guest
Not to confuse you, but the term 'legalizing' comes from the book Overcoming Overeating and is more referred to a 'making peace with food' in the IE book. In OO they suggest that you 'stock up' on former forbidden foods - always having MORE than enough - so that you never feel deprived of these. The thought is that you need to prove to yourself, and your body, that you won't have to gobble it quick before its gone. It also can help to overcome diet mentality (good/bad labeling) about that food. Its a wild experience mixed with joy (Yippee! I get to eat X!) and fear (Oh no, what will happen? I'll get FAT!) but the end result is to return 'charged' items to plain old FOOD that one chooses because you really want it or not to eat it. Another thing you may want to try is to use the Search in Messages at this group site to find back posts that address this topic. Guest guest
There are no rules here and that is one the greatest things but also scariest thing about IE. You get to make your own rules! Its different for each person. I think the important things are to really assess what you want and eat whenever you Are hungry. And sometimes it means giving yourself permission to eat your food even when not hungry. If you do eat your food when not hungry, be gentle with yourself and assess why that was. For me foods were full fat foods such as real butter, sour cream, cheese, whole milk, whipped cream, cream and ice cream and yogurt. What I found was that I was more satisfied eating real fat dairy and not low fat or no fat dairy that I actually ate less. Yes I over indulged but that was because I didn't pay attention to eating only when hungry. I took the legalizing to mean eat all I wanted whenever I wanted. So yes I gained weight. But eventually I stabalized and have been stable for a couple years. I did lose about 20 lbs. but gained some back when I started a new job and let all Ie principles out the window. So I am back working the Ie principles of eating when hungry. Good Luck and keep asking questions. Guest guest
Amy I found legalizing foods to be very simple once I stopped trying to find rules and guidelines for doing it. Check this idea out...all foods are legal. That's it. Don't make it harder than it needs to be. Relax and allow yourself to enjoy food again, guilt free. Ideally you will eat what you want to eat when you are hungry and you will stop eating when you realize you aren't hungry anymore. While you are eating what you want to eat you should be paying enough attention to really taste and enjoy each bite. It is that simple. We really do make things a lot more complicated than they need to be Notice though I said its simple but I've never said it will be easy. The peace you gain over food is so worth it. I recently discovered that I hadn't dieted a single day in 2011 and I believe it's the first whole year without dieting in the last 36 years of my life as an adult. I don't crave things anymore. I eat whatever sounds best from what's available. I don't buy tons of things that were previously off limits just to have around because I have several stores close enough that I can get those things from if I find myself unable to stop thinking of them. That rarely happens anymore though. Oh yeah those sweet desserts don't taste quite as good as I remember either. Guest guest
Thanks so much everyone! And Sunny, that really resonated with me! I think you're right, I was making it harder than it needed to be. I kept thinking " do I have to do something special with each and every food I've ever lost control with? " Much easier to think of it this way, as that's how I've kinda been trying to view things already in the couple of weeks since I've started this. I just thought maybe I wasn't doing it right! And can I just say, this seems to be an awesome group of people here. I don't think I have heard one negative thing said to someone in all the many posts I've been reading back on. Quite the (welcome) change from the diet message boards I used to frequent. Thanks again! Amy > > > I was hoping I could get some general guidelines and tips for legalizing foods? Guest guest
Guidelines are only rules by another name - and we all know that rules are made to be broken. Personally I'm not a fan of the saturation approach whereby you have loads of a previously forbidden food in the house - seems too much of a swing the other way to me - and actually doesn't calm me or make me feel comfortable about the food. I'm trying to take the approach of treating everything as just food - if I want something I have it - but I try to eat much more mindfully and really savour the food. It's a journey - I have started buying better quality food because now I need less anyhow so the extra cost is not a factor - choosing the best for ourselves is an important way to nurture ourselves. With the best, I seem to need less. Good luck on your journey. Experiment and be curious. Clare > > > > > I was hoping I could get some general guidelines and tips for legalizing foods? Guest guest
Good points Clare. I did better when I began thinking in terms of suggestions (options to choose or not) that even guidelines. Rules are so rebellion triggering for me. And while its good to avoid what really doesn't help me, its also not productive for me to only run away from them (rules). Far better to 'Experiment and be curious'! Lovely thought - Katcha > > Guidelines are only rules by another name - and we all know that rules are made to be broken. > Good luck on your journey.
