It is the simplest thing in the world to keep a dog from becoming overweight.

You just feed him less. The only thing my dog gets to eat is what I scoop out

into his dish twice a day. He can't open the pantry door, or fix himself

something from the fridge, so if he's wanting more, too bad. I wish it were

that simple for people.

But then I hear people say, " but he's hungry! " . Of course he's hungry. Dogs and

cats and all other animals are programmed to eat whatever they can get, whenever

they can get it, because who knows when their next meal might come. It might be

days. Well, I guess people are too...... But we've so arranged our lives that

those meals are always there.

OMG I guess some pets are really overweight and their owners need some help.

Our previous dogs and our current male dog would do that - feed themselves when

they were hungry and ignore the food the rest of the time. Then we got a female

that is so food crazy I swear she would eat until she burst! Plus if we didn't

pick up the male's food the female would clean his dish out the minute he walked

away and we weren't watching her. So I guess its individual for animals like it

is for people? One real interesting thing happened when our dogs dug out of our

fence and were gone in the woods for 3 days. They were so skinny when we found

them and of course they ate like pigs for the next few days. The weird part is

that the male would just not overfeed himself - before - and since then has been

a little more likely to eat extra. Gotta wonder if the 'diet' (starve) trigger

got to him too ;-)
