VERY rarely, I'll glean something valuable off of one of them--if I feel they're enhancing IE principles or even explaining the psychology behind my struggles. The majority of the time, I look at them with a mixture of amusement (Yeah right! SURE it'll cure ALL our weight problems! I believe THAT!) and pity (How many poor souls are out there watching this feeling a sense of hopelessness and about to shell out another $100 on the newest pill/video/bar/etc.?) I wish everyone could experience the freedom we're already learning to experience in eating this way!IE since Sep 2011 To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 10:06 PM Subject: T.V.

I was wondering how others deal with the barrage of diet commercials and television shows?

We don't have or listen to either cable, satellite or broadcast TV at all,

however I still find plenty of diet stuff that wants to impact my life - if I

let it. Every (medical) waiting room and its magazines seem to assail me with

diet drivel! When I began IE my initial reaction to these were ANGER. I hated

the judgmental, imposing and guilt dripping attitude that these ads wanted to

lay on me. I (mentally) stuck my tongue out them, yelled and told them to " back

the FAT off! " from me. (lol) After a while my anger ran its course and I got to

where these were minor annoyances that I came to be able to plain old ignore. If

I find my attention caught (tricked? trapped?) by these now my attitude has gone

to pity for those that want to believe the LIES that are being laid as a trap

for the $$$s ads have been made for.

Hooray for IE!

Christen, I hit the mute button or channel change.  I watch a lot of tv and I guess the best thing for me would be to watch less.  Sandy

Well said, Katcha. We also chose not to have tv when it became something we'd

have to pay for, and we've not missed it. However, I also run into " diet

drivel " at every turn. I think of it as similar to the temptation most men have

to deal with with choosing whether to focus on the airbrushed overexposed boobs

on the news stands, etc. It's sick stuff which will mess with our heads and is

ONLY there to make a profit. Of course, there are also " health warnings " and

advice on the radio, posters everywhere, and sent in the mail from insurance

companies, etc. Those are more intended to save money, and are well-meant, but

counterproductive, since we all know from sad experience that the surest way to

GAIN weight is to focus on LOSING it by dieting. So I do my best to ignore it

all and specifically choose not to read anything having to do with dieting (boy,

is THAT ever a turnaround for me)and actually walk away from discussions which

turn to dieting. Jane

I have limited broadcast tv (no satellite or cable). I do have an antenna and my tv is digital. I mostly watch dvd's. When I do watch broadcast tv, I use the commercials to get up and go to the bathroom or do some dishes or prepare stuff in the kitchen...I never watch the commercials.Carole To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 10:06:46 PM Subject: T.V.
