Hello! I am also 17 years old (but from the US) and i am going into

college in the fall. I had an underbite but not several gaps in the

teeth. I DID have braces (and still do) for several

years...um..since 3rd grade, got them off in 6th, got them put back

on in 9th and have had them ever since. I would definitely go with

the braces though.

I totally know how you feel about having your jaws grow and having to

wait and wait and wait. Every year (since the 7th grade) they [the

doctors] kept telling me " Next Summer " i would have the surgery

done...it really aggravated me and caused me to become really

emotional sometimes. When they finally told me that i would

definitely be getting the surgery done though, i was estatic.

I am in my 11th day post op and couldnt be doing better (atleast i

hope). Im glad that they waited so long because i don't seem to be

having any problems whatsoever. If i had gotten the surgery done

earlier than i did...then i might have complications with shifting

and whatnot.

It'll all be worth it later!

Hi. I am in the same sort of position as you, and am also form the uk

(scotland, I live near Edinburgh), where are you from? I have a lower jaw

which too big, but as I am only 16 I have to wait till I stop growing. So i

probally have another year or so to wait, which is why my ortho decided to

take of my fixed brace and to give me retainer, I will be getting the fixed

brace back on before the surgery.

The whole process does take ages, although I didn't have to wait that long,

I think, also my appointments end up being about every 2-3 months instead of

every month!

Good luck,

Hi Kendall,

Did you have pre-op braces as well as post-op braces? And how long

did you have to/are you going to wear them for?

In the months before the operation were your teeth completely mis

aligned in preperation for the new bite? And do the teeth fit

comfortably now?

Thanks... j0_ey

Um...hehe, honestly, i don't think that i had pre-op braces becuase i

don't exactly know what those are. My ortho never referred to them

as pre-op braces. I am hoping that i will beable to get these off by

thanksgiving or christmas break (that is at the earliest). I feel

like i have had braces for my whole life!

My teeth werent completely misaligned but my doctor DID have to

rotate my upper jaw in order to align my midline and septum up. My

teeth fit okay now..although it is really weird because i am not used

to it. I will be getting bands (eek!) in two weeks to get my back

teeth lined up....right now the bottom molars are slightly to the

right of my top molars.

Im sorry if these answers arent the ones that you were looking for.

Perhaps you didn't need to much allignment beforehand due to you

having had braces on for so long. I however will need a brace put in

before the surgery specifically to reallign the posistion of my teeth

in preperation for my new bite. Because if I had surgery today my

teeth just wouldn't fit and I would be left very uncomfortable...

Did you have your teeth wired together after the operation? Did you

have to eat food as liquid, and is this a pain?

Sorry, for the endless questions :)

in preperation for my new bite. Because if I had surgery today my

teeth just wouldn't fit and I would be left very uncomfortable...

Did you have your teeth wired together after the operation? Did you

have to eat food as liquid, and is this a pain?

Sorry, for the endless questions :)

No, luckily i did not have to have my teeth or jaws wired together

after the operation. I was only stitched and screwed (:P) However i

did have to have a liquid diet for the first week and a half. Right

now i am at 12 days post op and i am doing mushy stuff. Um, mashed

potatoes scrambled eggs soup...The only part that was a pain in the

butt was the drinking problem. I would have to drink out of a

styrofoam cup (because it was bendable and stuff) with a paper towel

below my mouth to catch the drippage.

And don't worry about all of the questions. ALL of us here have

asked a lot of questions. I know that i still ask tons of questions

so don't feel bad. I'm glad that i can help.

  • 8 years later...

Hello everyone! It's so refreshing to see a community of people helping and

encouraging one another and I have very much enjoyed reading the messages on

this site.

I have been practicing IE for 2 months now. After years of depriving myself my

mind and body had finally had enough and things needed to change. I read Jean

Fain's " The Self-Compassionate Diet " and Albers " Eat, Drink, and be

Mindful " .

For me the most difficult part of this philosophy is knowing when to stop

eating. The dieting part of my mind tells me I am no longer hungry after a

glass of water while the binging side of my personality tells me to keep going

until it's difficult to move.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

~Christen
