Katcha and Alana, thank you so much for responding to my post and

for sharing your experience with gluten and acid reflux. I'll try

cutting back on gluten and see if it helps, and I really like the

idea of "playing" with different foods to see what effect they might

have.

Thanks again!

I have a co-worker that is primarily gluten free and she

says she too had reflux/heartburn and it helped her.

Definately something to look into. I know I feel better

too when I remain as gluten free as possible.

Sue, wanted to share with you that I had more reflux as I

began IE. Initially I thought it was due to the larger

amounts of chocolate I was eating (for legalizing), but as

time passed my concern for potential damage from the

reflux got me more serious about what I could do. Along

about the time that my concern was happening, I also began

hearing/reading about gluten being a potential agent in

diabetes. It also made sense to me that if my digestive

system was reacting to something like gluten in an

'allergic' manner - reflux, and a few other digestive

symptoms I was having, might well be how such a reaction

could show itself. I didn't have any testing done, but

decided to just cut back on gluten eating to see if that

made any positive difference for me. Long story short -

yes it did. My reflux is almost non-existent now and when

I do chose to eat gluten items it can remind me why that's

not a good idea (or honoring my body) too.

I'm not saying that if you go gluten free you will not

have reflux or other bothers, but I think you can be

pleasantly surprised if you are willing to give a go at

play around with different foods to see if you have any

negative reactions that you hadn't noticed before. Do take

care to not have this become a 'restriction' thing for you

as our diet rebels can rear their ugly little heads over

such a thing. Just be kind and gentle in this and if

possible make it into a FUN 'play with food' experiment.

BEST to you, Katcha

Thank you, too, Abby, for your feedback about my acid reflux! I wish

I could ask the doctor for my medication to be increased, but I'm on

such a high dose now that my insurance company requires special

documentation from the doctor in order to cover the whole expense.

And the doctor has said it's the highest dose. I've tried other

meds, and they don't work for me as well as this one. So for now,

I'm stuck with what I've got for medical remedies. I've even looked

into surgery for the hiatal hernia, but the gastroenterologist said

he wouldn't recommend it in my case. So it seems like the only

recourse is to find ways to deal with it in my lifestyle.

Probably it would help to give up coffee and spicy food, but I'd

definitely feel deprived if I did!

Thanks again -- the feedback is so helpful.

Gluten also causes reflux for me. It's not severe but I

don't have it any other time.

But a thought... can you ask your doctor to work on

changing the dose or the medication itself to better

address your reflux NOW? No point in putting (more)

pressure on losing weight... we all know how well that

works! <smile>
