Holidays and Pets

I just want to remind everyone that holidays can be dangerous for our pets if we are not careful.

Here is a list of things you might want to be aware of:

Do not give bones to your pets. Animals can choke on them and they can become lodged in their intestines.

Make sure leftovers are out of your pets way so that they can't get into foods that can harm them.

Be sure your animal never has access to alcohol

Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs.

Do not use edible ornaments on your tree. The temptation may just be too much for your pet.

Do not use glass ornaments that can easily break and be swallowed by your pet.

Pine needles can also make your pets very ill, and tinsel can cause bowel obstruction.

Of course, we all know that chocolate can be fatal for a dog or cat so please don't keep wrapped chocolates under your tree.

Keep lit candles out of reach of your animals.

Angelhair can be very toxic to your pets, and those bubbling tree lights are also toxic.

Lastly, please do not give an animal to someone for Christmas. If you want to do that then give them a gift certificate from a breeder or just a certificate that you make yourself to get their new puppy or kitty a month later. Christmas morning is no time to have to give a new puppy or kitten the time and energy they deserve. So many pets that were given for Christmas and birthdays end up in shelters.
