Guest guest
Hi there: I read your child is 4.5 years old. If he turns 5 before September 1, he wouldn't be able to attend Baudhuin (another parent mentioned Baudhuin; my daughter goes there). But, if he turns 5 after that, start calling now. Baudhuin is part of Nova Southeastern University and the Mailman Segal Institute. It's in Davie and, frankly, it's a blessing for us. does get that extra year; she turns 5 in October. I've also put out the question regarding good placement once my child is ready for Kindergarten, but have had no good news. I think Broward's public school system isn't the best place for our kids. We are actually looking into moving up by Tampa for a school there. Do contact C.A.R.D. (Center for Autistic Related Disabilities); they're very resourceful. I don't have their number, but google " C.A.R.D. University of Miami " and you can take it from there. Also, contact the School District of Broward County. That address is 'www.broward.k12.fl.us'. Make phone calls and gather info. One more thing; contact the Autism Society of America, Broward chapter. I think the president's name is Stacey Hoaglund (not sure about that spelling!). Good luck! Guest guest
Also in Palm Beach County I know of no one who gets more then 150 MPW..........in fact this year they were tring to lower the minutes on some kids becuase at the start of the year they had only 1 SLP for 36 students. The parents were smart and would not let them do this. Also in Palm beach county at least for K-5 the 150 MPW is made up of group and 1:1 speech. My son was only getting about 10 mins of 1:1 speech per day the rest was group. Dawn To: sList Sent: Tue, December 29, 2009 11:15:00 AMSubject: Re: *New * to S. Florida. Thanks for acceptance into the group. We're moving to S. Florida (Broward) next month from New York City. My son is currently 4.5 yrs old and has PDD-NOS. Currently, he's in a center based full day (5x wk) funded private school and we also have outside services. I would like to request any help/info in understanding School options and how the ESE program works. My son has a current IEP which I've just shared with the ESE Committee along with his evaluations and diagnosis. I'm not sure I will go with a Public School setting so I'd be open to exploring private schools as well. My goal is to find him the very best placement I can knowing his weaknesses/strength s. We'll be living in Ft Lauderdale (off Sunrise Blvd) right near the Bayview Elementary school. My son is currently in a Pre-K program now so I'll need to find him an appropriate Pre-K program in addition to exploring Kindergarten options for August. I would really appreicate any feedback & information you can provide regarding schools and ESE which we call CPSE up here in New York. Guest guest
One therapist for 36 children is actually considered a very low number. In Broward County most speech therapists are seeing upwards of 60, 75 children and some even more. Some states have caps on the number of children that therapists can see but Florida is not one of them. This has been particularly hard for therapists this year with cuts, etc. Expectations have become very high where therapists must see many children and do a significant amount of paperwork. In the schools most therapy is grouped (you can see why with that amount of children to service) Most therapists can find ways to make accomodations for those kids that need individual services but it is getting harder and harder with cuts and scheduling these days. In terms of the amount of therapy- 150 min which could be divided into 30 min per day 5 day per week is a good amount for kids that have significant needs. keep in mind that especially in programs such as clusters, communication should be ongoing all day and not just done at "speech time". Also, as kids are getting older and academics become more of a focus, sometimes the amount of pull out services needs to be decreased. It is all dependent on the child and how he/she is doing and there is not one recipe for all. Everyone is working hard and just like drs, every other profession, everyone is feeling the pressure these days. The best thing is for therapists and parents to work together so that carryover can be done. I have seen children that receive 5 days of speech do worse than those with 3 days when the parent is more involved, etc I currently work in the schools but am available for some other services as well, preferably close to the sunrise area- please contact privately for more info good luck! Guest guest
Out of curiosity what is the average amount of time that a ASD kid has been receiving OT in the schools? When my daughter was in Kindergarten she got 45 min a week and I was told that was unusually high. She's now in 3rd grade and is getting 30 min a week. Her annual IEP meeting is next week and I already know that they will try to reduce it some more.Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 07:29:40 -0800 (PST)To: <sList >Subject: Re: *New * to S. Guest guest
When my daughter attended Bauduin she and most of the kids there at that time did not get one on one speech therapy. I actually didn't know any kid at that time that got speech. When I asked, they said something about it being a 'verbal' school and that the kids were getting plenty of natural speech throughout the day. I have no idea if that is still the case in Bauduin but one of the few things that I like about her public school now is the 150 hours of speech that she is currently getting.Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 15:08:55 -0000To: <sList >Subject: Re: *New * to S. Currently, he's in a center based full day (5x wk) funded private school and we also have outside services.I would like to request any help/info in understanding School options and how the ESE program works. Thank you in advance!from
