Guest guest
I could not disagree more from  the first word of the paragraph to the last word of the paragraph. Our children have a more serious problem than Broward County Schools finding funds for appropriate services for the children that is mandated by law. If I had my way I would withdraw all IDEA funds for services and let the state meet its obligation using only state funds. The therapist caseload is not a parent's problem but the schools. If they were more concerned about the services our children receive they would do something about it and stop crying poverty. The number of children they serve should have nothing to do with putting them in groups or clusters and the reason is unique, unique, unique needs of the child. Should I say it again? The phrase is " unique needs " of the child. That is where the school district should start their evaluation, not ignore it. The statement that 30 minutes per day of Speech Therapy is a " good amount for kids with significant needs " is determined by what language professional? Or is it determined by Budget Director? There is no such wording as " significant needs " in the law. It must be unique needs. Speech and clusters don't mix. The cluster just merely divides the valuable time amongst many to the point where the therapy becomes insignificant and useless.  I honestly don't understand why you would wait for the child to get older before academics becomes the focus. Academics should be the focus from the very start. I would like to see the objective data that shows the STAR Program has any influence in correcting the behavior of children. Although autistic children are visual learners once they have a sufficient amount of vocabulary they should be treated as verbal learners. After all this is the objective in the first place. It is so easy to continue using visuals but easy is not the name of the game. You also have to remember that working together is a two-way street. All a parent has to do is disagree with something and cooperation becomes a one-way street.  Parent involvement has little if anything to do with a child doing better with 3 days per week than the child with 5. Did you ever consider that perhaps the 5 days per week child may need more Speech? But this is actually comparing apples and oranges. You can't expect two different spectrum children have the same progress. It defies reality. And lastly but not least, if you think all these professionals are under a lot of pressure, talk to a mother or father or even a grandfather, and find out what pressure really is. After they have divorced their spouse, lost their home and are raising a Special Needs child, what kind of pressure could they possible have?   From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Aileen Montag Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 10:30 AM To: sList Subject: Re: *New * to S. In Broward County most speech therapists are seeing upwards of 60, 75 children and some even more. Some states have caps on the number of children that therapists can see but Florida is not one of them. This has been particularly hard for therapists this year with cuts, etc. Expectations have become very high where therapists must see many children and do a significant amount of paperwork. In the schools most therapy is grouped (you can see why with that amount of children to service) Most therapists can find ways to make accomodations for those kids that need individual services but it is getting harder and harder with cuts and scheduling these days. In terms of the amount of therapy- 150 min which could be divided into 30 min per day 5 day per week is a good amount for kids that have significant needs. keep in mind that especially in programs such as clusters, communication should be ongoing all day and not just done at " speech time " . Also, as kids are getting older and academics become more of a focus, sometimes the amount of pull out services needs to be decreased. It is all dependent on the child and how he/she is doing and there is not one recipe for all. Everyone is working hard and just like drs, every other profession, everyone is feeling the pressure these days. The best thing is for therapists and parents to work together so that carryover can be done. Guest guest
Actually that verbal school stuff was told to me by their speech pathologist. She said they create the speech program for the classroom and supervise the teacher within the classroom. I know another list member mentioned something about budget cuts. Please note that the schools receive significant amount of money for our kids. Hence the matrix number on our childs IEP. The higher the number the more funds they get. I wonder if every single penny that the school gets on behalf of our children is truly spent for their needs. Guest guest
I do have to agree that I would not accept that my son was getting " natural speech " within the classroom throughout the day and that should/would satisfy his speech needs. Like mentioned by , my son has specific speech/language needs and weakness that would need to be addressed by a Speech Pathologist. It's just not the same and I think an argument for that can be easily made. Going to research Bauduin a bit more. Do they have a variety of classrooms? Are there any integrated rooms? Also interested in other schools/programs that are similar? He's only 4.5 so I'll need a preschool program > > > > > > From: Cheryl <cheryl.punk@> > > Subject: *New * to S. Florida. Florida. Guest guest
I do have to agree that I would not accept that my son was getting " natural speech " within the classroom throughout the day and that should/would satisfy his speech needs. Guest guest
The Bauduin " model " has no studies to back it's efficacy. The " oral " school label is actually a leftover from when Bauduin was actually a dedicated school for the deaf, hence " oral school. " The term happens to work very well as a label to use for non verbal autistic children. And lets remember that the students in Bauduin are new to public education. Their parents are basically newbies (sorry new parents) and don't really know what they are entitled to or how Broward County Schools provide FAPE. So the " we don't do speech therapy becaause we ar an oral school " line works pretty good for them. Regarding matrix funding, all the funds attached to an ESE student go into the schools general fund. It can then be spent at the descretion of the principal. The services for the ESE student are driven by the IEP, and even if the IEP calls for more than the funding provided by the matrix, the school still has to provide agreed upon services. Guest guest
I have also heard ESE Specialists and Autism Coach use the same "language based program " excuse for Place programs at a Broward County School, it is not only Baudhuin............ Also, any parent starting their child in School System be it Baudhuin or any sort of Place Program usually is a "newbie", and has to become an investigator/ advocate to know what their child is entitled to. I have had both experiences with my two children one in Baudhuin and one in a Place Program. I have found that Baudhuin gave the parents more info on where to find our their children's rights, laws, and understanding IEP's much more than the Broward County School. This is just my experience..... Subject: Re: *New * to S. Florida. Guest guest
You bring up an excellent point Virginia. I think everyone can agree that the earlier a child with autism gets educational / therapy services the better he/she will respond. The way the current system is set up in that parents " new " to the system can't " hit the ground running " in regards to the educational system. So when a new student enrolls in public school they are at mercy of whatever placement they get unless the parent gets an advocate from square one. This is short sited by the School Districts because the more therapy and attention a student is given early the better, easier and cheaper he/she will be to educate in the long run. The part about advocates and lawyers I find very disturbing. Our kids are entitled to FAPE from the Feds and a secure, uniform and high quality education according to the Florida Constitution. The uniform and appropriate part is out the door between those students represented by advocates and/or lawyers and those that are not. I don't think the authors of IDEA or the Florida Constitution meant for it to be that way. Steve Moyer > > > > > > > > > From: Cheryl <cheryl.punk@ > > > > Subject: *New * to S. Florida.
