Guest guest
I had my autistic 5 year old sedated at Dan marino Center last year for an MRI. I was extremely nervous since my daughter doesnt sit still at all. The nurses at DMC were great, I understand Joe Dimaggio has a good staff too from other experiences there. It all went well. My daughter slept for part of the day then I had to help her get around for a few hours. By bedtime she was back to normal. I just had to watch her extra carefully because she wanted to crawl everywhere since she didn't have feeling in her legs yet from the med and it made her more frustrated. Overal it was a good experience. It wasnt worth the sleep I lost. I'll pray yours goes smoothly too! _______________________________ America's Most Wanted\Producer\Florida Bureau Cell Email: Det@... Guest guest
My daughter had to have an MRI before she was 2 and she was completely sedated because they can't move. We did it at The Dan Marino Center and they were very good. She had to fast starting at midnight the night before and we were scheduled for a 8:00AM appointment. She was asking for water the whole ride there, but she was okay. It was thru an IV and the only that was bad for us was the fact that she was fighting the anesthesia. They had to give her more to get her to finally fall asleep, but otherwise she did great. The MRI only took about 30 minutes for us, but it probably depends on what it's for. Lastly, some kids throw up afterwards so people say bring towels for your car, but our daughter was fine, she was sucking down apple juice afterwards like it was going out of style. I hope this helps. Any other questions feel free to contact me. Guest guest
Hi, my son had a an MRI under sedation at Dan Marino. The sedation takes about 15-30 mins and then the MRI takes about the same or up to an hour, depending upon the tests ordered. The kids are given an oral sedative to relax them and then an IV drip. My son also was given Emla for the IV spot because he was so little. The only bad side effects can be coming out of anesthesia, they can be grumpy, or a little violent and nauseated. It goes away fairly fast, they also can get sleepy. I wish you the best of luck. Jane Free Teleconference ...Seclusion and Restraint: Concerns and Solutions Email not displaying correctly? Guest guest
Thank you all for replying to my concerns.Unforunately I just found out that my daughter is too big for sedation so they are recommending general anthesia. Okay, now I'm petrified!I wish we could do this without any anthesia but I know that she won't stay still for 30 minutes to do this MRI.Wish there was another alternative.Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: earlsjane@...Date: Wed, 20 Jan 2010 12:57:47 -0500To: <sList >Subject: Re: MRI at Joe DiMaggio sedation Hi, my son had a an MRI under sedation at Dan Marino. It goes away fairly fast, they also can get sleepy.I wish you the best of luck. Jane Free Teleconference ...Seclusion and Restraint: Concerns and Solutions Email not displaying correctly? Guest guest
I do remember having to be at the hospital by 6:30-7 am and by the time he was taken in would be about 2 hours later. (I actually get more anxious for them to start and get it over with, than him) The fasting is from the night before/by midnight, but he would be asleep by then anyways. He had short MRIs, (although to you it would seem like hours) but the last one, which was to check his spine, took almost 2 hours. It took us about 1-1.5 hours for him to actually wake up completly for us to leave the hospital. If I remember anything else I'll let you know. But if you have any other questions, just let me know. Again, it was usually worse for me than it was for him. I would go into the room with the MRI and actually hold his hand until he passed out. Because my son used to be very heavy (with all the side effects of the meds he was taking for many years) the problem was that sometimes they did not apply enough and once, but this happened at Miami Children's in Miami, the anesthesiologist got kind of rude because it was taking too long and he did not have time to wait. I called Dr. Tuchman at the Dan Marino Center and he straighten out the anesthesiologist and everything turned out fine at the end. Never had anything like that happen at DiMaggio!
